Exactly... we don't know much about that weapon...
And... I admit... I know almost nothing about the EU... I am hardcore Star Wars fan but my only reference is the movies. We know that it's a special weapon, that it's not a casual weapon...

It it becomes the Macguffin of the next episode... I have the feeling we will learn a little more about the secrets surrounding its creation.

I like how we could hear glass shattering in space.

Again a solid proof, the lightsaber found its way back! It escaped the blowing Death Star, fell on Endor and attached itself to Luke's belt.

And then finds itself back in space....falls back to the planet not-called-Tatooine....is found by Naka, the arsonist in a savannah...a local trader recovers it from the debris....is sold to the Vicar....given to Poe....hidden in BB-8....revealed to Rose....given to Finn...somehow gets into Rey's hands...and then passed on to Luke.....

    THE JEDIS MUST BE CRAZY.

But yeah....let's keep discussing what color the lightsaber is or if it fell into Bespin's atmosphere....nevermind that this sounds like Incredible Journey 3 (wonder is a talking dog is going to help the lightsaber get to its master)

If that were true, then Luke wouldn't have had to build a new one...there were plenty (in all shapes and sizes) lying around after Order 66...

That would be interesting, im Luke taking a walk through the forest of Endor & suddenly a lightsaber drops out of the sky & straps itself to my belt, unreal it must attach itself to a force user once in range.

I tried but failed to google an image of Luke hauling Vader up the ramp to his Lambda shuttle, as I think there are several frames worth of Luke hip/arse shots there. Not that I am particularly interested in pics of Luke's arse, but it should prove whether he has picked up his lightsaber at that point, or if the "party lightsaber" was a retcon thing. If anyone has better google fu than me, please do post an image :p

When he arrives in the Ewok village while everyone is celebrating you can clearly see the lightsaber hanging from his belt.

    It's a swangin at about 0:40

I was thinking more about the scenes that precede this, like Vader's demasking and such. I looked it up on youtube, and I can't get a clear picture.

I see, just to see if they made a mistake? The important thing we can take away from it is Luke definitely still had possession of the green ROTJ saber the last time we saw him.

Yes, I'm interested in seeing if they made a mistake that was later retconned.

The light sabre floating through space is interesting for a number of reasons:

    1. No other SW movie starts with a focus on an object in this way. All 6 movies begin with ships containing characters that will VERY QUICKLY become central to the action arriving somewhere. The closest we get to this light sabre reveal in an existing episode is the launch of the Probe Droids at the opening of ESB, but even they represent the omniscience of the Empire. The light sabre (for now) doesn't seem to represent anything at all except a rather obvious metaphor for torch-passing from old to new cast. (I appreciate it could mean more, but at the moment of writing we just don't know.) The rumoured chronology is against convention, too: sabre in space - sabre falls to planet - sabre found by x - x takes sabre to y - etc.... It's flabby and suggests the involvement of too many incidental (i.e., not central) characters.

    2. This rumoured openiong establishes a president for things thought lost and unimportant returning after a prolonged absence and transpiring to have greater import than was previously supposed. Yeah okay, cut to the chase: Plagueis. If a lost light sabre can return and be important, why can't a dead Sith Lord? All I'm saying.

    3. From this vantage, given what we know and expect, it just sounds too incredible.

My opinion: IF the sabre falls to Tatooine and IF it's Anakin/Luke's and IF it reaches Rey, it won't be coincidence. It won't be the will of the Force, either--even though we the audience and the characters in the movie may believe it to be. It will be part of an elaborate trap to lure Jedi (possibly Luke) into the open. And when we finally hear the real explanation of how the sabre got where it is WE WILL ALL THINK, "Ah, that makes sense now. Of course! A sabre travelling all that way across all those years WAS non-sense, but now I see it was all an elaborate ruse! Plagueis, you're a dark, dark genius...."
