I think it's about time these movies had females in the lead role. It gets tiresome after a while when the central character is always a male.

When I read people whining about having another female heroine in the Star Wars universe I wonder:

What if this was World History?

Are these people aware that back in history, there were not only male main characters as Henry V of England, George Washington, Admiral Nelson or King Leonidas of Sparta? That there was a Queen Isabella I of Castile, a Joan of Arc, a Cleopatra or a Queen Elizabeth I of England?

If these stories are to be told in the SW universe, obviously we will have men and women involved at a certain extent. But as some have already mentioned before, there will be always reason for complaining. "Why they didn't cast a Black/Latin/Asian character? Why they didn't include more aliens? Twi'leks? Rodians? etc".

Don't we all realize that, compared to the first SW movie, where there were only two visible female characters in the movie, at least we have advanced a little?

I don't have personally a problem with having another female leading the cast this time.

personally, i can't wait until another movie comes out with a straight, white dude saving the day!

also, i know this is off topic to the nth degree, but who is this? Snoke or helmetless Vader?? (vader 2)(vader 2)(vader 2) whoever he is, that's as white and manly as i want my heroes! lol

and the level of complaining is astonishing. even when they do cast something diversely, people complain. i swear i saw an article complaining about Oscar Isaac because, well, it was fine and all that they cast a Latin person, but he changed his Latin last name (so...therefore he doesn't count?).

sometimes you just gotta laugh at the absurdity of it all.

I know!!! I mean, he can choose whichever name he wants. And then, we have all this diversity inside the Latin community, that sometimes when people pictures a Latin guy they imagine a dark-skinned person, when you can have White, Black, Brown, Asian etc Latin!!

That reminds me of a tweet I read about a TV series ("How To Get Away With Murder") about them casting an actress called Karla Souza to play a Latin law student, since she is white and blue-eyed. The thing is that people criticising that didn't know she is actually Mexican. Just an example of this crazy social media world we live in. You would think that with all the technology we've got, people would be more informed, but that's clearly not the case lol.

Agree, laughing at all that crazy stuff is the best way to deal with it lol.

no lie. don't even get me started on so-and-so isn't black enough or mexican enough or "passes as puerto rican, but is actually guatamalan, so feh!"

eight Star Wars movies and six of them have white male leads.
i think the franchise will survive with a couple of women and some more people of color thrown into the mix.

whenever i think of racial diversity in Star Wars, i always remember Cracked magazine's parody of TESB in which Vader says "Luke, I am your father!"
and Luke replies, "Aww, go on. Dad wasn't black."
and Vader says, "This is a mask, you dip!"
and my 10 year-old self always thought, without irony: but James Earl Jones is black.

apropos of nothing except to say you can't fix blindness and/or narrow-mindededness when it comes to this stuff.

Sorry but can we not linger on this? I feel like i'm stuck in a groundhog day loop. First people go on about having trouble with Rey being the lead character. Then the cast of Rogue One was announced same thing happened and then again when the trailer was released.

Yeah, but they were not the central character the story revolved around.

The PT and The Clone Wars were all about Anakin, Rebels seems to be all about Ezra and the OT was all about Luke. That's four sets of productions that focused entirely on a male Jedi character. Now it's time to give women a chance to be the leader.

I cannot imagine the meltdown if Jyn was played by the woman of color... Actually, I can... and that is sad.

Some people are never happy, whatever you do. Criticizing people who are making things when they barley can take a selfie or spell a word.

There's a french author who stated one time, **** people dare anything and that's how we recognize them..

Sometimes I forget entirely that Natalie Portman was even in these movies. Can we agree to leave her off any future listings of "strong" female leads in SW movies? ;)

The trailer didn't do a lot for me, but I feel like we weren't given enough to make solid conclusions. How much personality did any of the characters have in the first TFA trailer?

To me, this trailer was more about educating the world that this is a new SW movie and not EP8.

After you filled him in and showed him a trailer that says "state your name for the record....Jyn Ersa" he thought it was Rey?

Would the movie really be so different if Felicity dyed her hair?

I think she is a great actress, so I'm looking forward to the film.

I don't think we know enough about this role to know that Gwen would have been better casting. She might've been a terrible fit. I think a giantess as a spy would stick out like a sore thumb.

I kinda wish Disney had the guts to have a film with alien leads. People are boring and done to death.

Strongly agree. Star Wars has such a rich ensemble of aliens that it's almost a sin not to use them to their full capacity. Some are even easy to emulate in terms of make up and prosthetics, like the Mirialans, for example.

Anyways, returning to the topic at hand, let's consider the following: the upcoming anthology movies will feature Han Solo, Boba Fett (?) and hell, at this point, even Obi Wan as well. All male characters. Is it truly that much to accept another female "face" as part of this vast cinematic universe?

You seem to have ignored the fact that the man has a lot on his mind these days. He saw the trailer once, not 100 times like you or me, he didn't catch every line and memorize it immediately. Jesus.

I don't know, as I have not seen the movie, just a short trailer.
