To those complaining about another female lead.
Not only about Daisy and Felicity, about Finn, Forest, Donnie, etc.
(i understand this could easily be merged into another thread, but people need to see this)

Great find, I'm not bothered about another female lead in this trailer, it's great that it has happened again.

Why does he call it revenge? That's a weird way to put it.

IMHO. There are two different kinds of people that are complaining about a female lead in another Star wars movie. Sexist a**holes (pardon the language), and people that enjoy a character with flaws. https://thecantina.starwarsnewsnet....g-about-reys-fast-arc.8047/page-3#post-266310 Read my post, as it will explain what I mean. It doesn't matter If the lead is male or female. It's the way that certain producers and directors treat races and genders, which in the long run can affect the overall movie.

I've been tempted to rant angrily about idiot geeks who feel threatened by the increased presence of women in the Star Wars universe, but have refrained from doing so in the interest of promoting world peace and civility among fans. Suffice to say, anyone who feel themselves or the beloved franchise threatened or belittled by women in the shows or in the fandom, needs to take a close blasted look at their life and reassess their values. There is something seriously wrong with your or your upbringing if you’re this afraid of or angry towards women. ( <-- addressed at no one in particular on this board). The increase of women in Star Wars is a great boon to the stories, the artistry, and the franchise, not to mention fandom and geekiness in general; a breath of fresh air and ‘originality’ several decades overdue. So there! :p

I don't think it is about a female lead, or shouldn't be. It's about story and good acting. As long as it has that, then the lead doesn't matter. If it doesn't have it then the lead will not matter.

I don't think it's about a female lead to Disney either. Except in the sense that they are probably of the belief that a movie with a female lead can make it a bigger movie. That is, a movie that will make more money. Anyone that thinks Disney has made this choice for female empowerment or whatever is off base. It's become clear that a movie with a female lead can be huge, that there is no monetary risk when having a female lead, so that's the major reason behind the timing of this (back to back movies with female protagonists), in my opinion.

So what I'm saying is there is no "feminist agenda" (as a troll from another thread claimed). It's a capitalist agenda. The people in the movie business have recognized the fans* desire to see females in a lead role, so that's what we are getting.

    EDIT

*I actually meant moviegoers (fans) in general, not necessary star wars fans.

I agree. Current Star Wars fans will probably see it regardless. A female lead can broaden and open the female fan base.

i suspect the female fanbase is already much larger than people realize.

i'm not crazy yet about the character we look to be getting in Jyn but it's just a teaser so far.
and that's not about her being a woman ~ it's about her being a smartass ("i rebel!") ~ hahaha

i think they did an awesome job with Rey in TFA.
i hope Jyn is likewise not some stereotype of the brash plucky hardass but a whole person we can relate to.

it didn't even occur to me that people would get het up about Jyn being another female lead until i saw this thread ~ hahaha

Oh I agree it is larger than we realize. I have met many myself and constantly ask myself where the hell were they when I was a nerdy teen that love Star Wars haaa. But it never hurts to bring in new female fans.

i went to go see TFA in the threatre every Tuesday since it opened and as the crowds dwindled there toward the end, i was always surprised to see mostly other women in the audience (or Dads bringing their kids; boys and girls). and these were largely repeat viewers like myself.

i wonder where they were too when i was younger ~ hahaha. i remember having a lot of friends who were boys and into it, but the girls seemed largely into Barbie and Hello Kitty (which probably explains why i didn't play with them!).

p.s. looks like you and i are about the same age, @Fearghas_Ajax!

@FN-3263827 , haha, Yea all the guys in my neigbor were fans. The girl populations was smaller and I don't remember them being fans. I've found quite a few long time fans here lately that I knew as a kid but didn't know they were a fan then. I guess it wasn't as mainstream back then for a girl to say I'm a fan. I proudly carried my little metal Star Wars lunch box to school. lol

i had a Darth Vader folder i was especially fond of. used it for years until it fell apart. and i still have a 30+ year-old spiral notebook from Return of the Jedi with Luke and Darth Vader on it. but yeah, i suspect it just wasn't "cool" for girls to admit it back then. luckily i had brothers, so didn't feel like i ever had to hide it ~ hahaha

My God. People are so black and white on this. I find this character to be another generic YA novel Katniss rip-off who has no personality and delivered both of her lines so badly and without emotion. Now granted this is only one trailer and it's all out of context. But I can just tell by the way they're selling this character that it's gonna be another generic "strong" female character that we have to say is strong just because she's the protagonist. Rey was a relatable and likable character from the beginning. Jyn? I don't care at all about what happens to her in this movie. I understand the tone is more serious because it's a straight up war film, but you don't have to make your characters so boring. This is the problem I had with the Hunger Games movies. Katniss is just there to have 2 facial expressions and move the plot along. I don't think it's absurd to want female characters that aren't all the same. Especially if they're in the main role. A strong female character implies she's written well. If she's not written well, she's not strong.

I think they should have taken it farther if they wanted to cast another female.

Last night a very good friend of mine, the guy who camped out for Episode I tickets with me, saw TFA for the first time at my home theater. He's had a lot going on the last 10-15 years, horribly abusive marriage, two kids, messy ugly divorce. He loved TFA, so I filled him in on what's coming up, and showed him the Rogue 1 teaser. He thought it was Rey, that they'd recast her, and made the next one about another Death Star. This guy I would describe as having been a strong fan at one time to a more casual fan due to real life forcing different priorities on him. He was so confused and a little hurt that the next film looked to be disregarding Rey's story, so I informed again of the subject matter and where it falls on the timeline.

Jen being white, thin, British, brunette, and a badass fighter was too close in the traits shown in the trailer to the character he'd just minutes before fell in love with.

If she had been Asian, Black, or even blonde, I don't think he'd have been as turned off by what he saw. He didn't dismiss the films premise, but his interest diminished slightly when he realized he was being given such a similar character so soon. It felt like a cookie cutter casting choice to him he said.

So when people have that sort of reaction we have to look at the way these producers are casting these roles. If they are going for diversity, really do it. Give us a character we immediately feel is fresh and new and expanding to the series.

Don't cast someone as an act of vengeance, which is what the guy in the video seems to think this is. His use of that word bothers me, because it indicates he feels like racists and sexists are worth that sort of action.

Revenge is not the Jedi way.

From just looking at the trailer i have to agree with you. She's pretty 2D.
But knowing this actors potential and knowing that the producers know that as well + scale and importance of this story, i have to believe that her character will end up being much greater and deeper than another Katniss. At least i hope.

You know what, I'm just so sick and tired of hearing people complain AND care about what race/gender the protagonist is. Should it really matter? It sure is miles better than casting an 8 year old boy who has no experience in acting........ahem. Please no more posts like these, please. No one in the Cantina is complaining about this anyway.

You know what conclusion I came to this afternoon while thinking about this?

This is the role Gwendoline Christie should have been given.

She could stand shoulder to shoulder with Linda Hamilton, Sigourney Weaver, Brigitte Nielsen ( hey I'm a Red Sonja fan), Zoe Saldana, half her co-stars on GOT, I really could go on for a while here.

Friggin' Space Valkyrie, man. Heroes and Heroines should be larger than life.

Gimme a gal worth naming a Rebel Fighter squadron after.
