Anybody else disappointed in the lack of marketing of Han, Luke + Leia?

Our beloved characters are passing the torch in Episode 7, not 8!
Their trilogy is over; this trilogy belongs to the new young cast.

Harrison Ford will be the Alec Guinness of this movie...but not *more* than that. Ep 4 was Luke, Han, and Leia's story, not Obi-Wan's. The same will be true of Ep 7.

Besides, there's a fine line between small but extremely potent doses of the larger-than-life OT characters and pandering to nostalgic fans. There will be plenty of nostalgia. When you see Luke on screen, you'll pass out in your chair, sure. Abrams knows that. It doesn't make sense to over-do it. Besides, it seems that Luke will be the Yoda of Ep 8...

I hope nobody gets offended, but she's not necessarily the Carrie Fisher you remember. A lifetime of mental illness, stimulants, narcotics, and electroshock therapy have definitely taken a toll. She's the youngest of the legends, but she's the one whose aged the least well, so to speak.

I expect that her screen time will be extremely limited, probably little more than a cameo. Don't be disappointed.

The bright side is that Han is a major part of this movie, and Luke will presumably have a much bigger role in Ep 8 (lots of Skellig Michael filming already).

I agree. I love Carrie, and I don't judge her experiences, as we all have inner monsters to deal with. But, I am concerned at how fans will react to seeing her onscreen. She looks remarkably worn down, and that is something I would never say about someone usually. I am just worried people will be mean about it. I think she will have a smaller role as you say. Here's hoping she's a Lady Stark and not an awkward distraction, as much as that pains me to say.

    Well said.

I'm not too worried. JJ is too smart to let things get out of hand. I think they could her to pull it together for a few brief scenes. My guess is that most fans probably won't notice anything amiss on screen... But there's no way she could be a major player.

I dunno man, I don't think they'd have had her at the read-through, had her in the behind-the-scenes video or even have announced her being in the film if she had such a small role. I say the same to people who go by the MSW theory that Luke turns up at the end for one scene.

They didn't even have Lupita Nyong'o at the read-through, and we're honestly meant to believe that Maz is in it for a bigger amount of time than Luke and Leia?

For a movie like this (which asks young, relative unknowns to step into shoes occupied by legends with the whole world watching), that's a symbolic team-building (ice-breaking) event meant to foster chemistry and camaraderie among the cast. It says nothing whatsoever about the number of lines a person has.

Did you know that Jar Jar Binks has the most dialogue in TPM?

The MSW "theory" isn't a "theory" and we're not "meant to believe anything."

I ran a spoiler websites when the prequels were being made. MSW (and this site) are reporting what trusted sources tell them they can report (and trust in those sources takes a lot to build).

AFAIK, reports are that Leia only has a few scenes (in the [Yavin IV?] war room). For your sake and mine, I *hope* it's only a few scenes...

As much as Luke, Leia, and Han are Star Wars to me, the worst thing Disney could do is promote them in a way that many older fans actually think they are main players in this Trilogy.

The first 2 teasers have made it clear atleast TFA is about Rey, Finn, Poe and Kylo Ren, so I give Disney credit for not false advertising the OT Big 3.

If you remember ROTS was heavily marketed with Suited Vader and we end up only getting a few minutes of him in the movie. I remember reading a spoiler a week before the movie about his screentime and really felt duped by the marketing.

Yup. I'm BIG TIME disappointed, and will be extremely disappointed if Luke ends up having just a cameo, and the original cast never even interacts with each other at all in the film. I'll be 100 times as pissed if they kill Han and he never gets to interact with Luke and Leia again, because then we'll never see the OT cast interact again in anything, ever.

JJ and Disney are wasting a once in a lifetime opportunity.

And to think at one time I had hoped to see Luke use his green lightsaber at least twice in the Return Of The Jedi sequel.....I know that will never happen now.

I think I prefer the focus on the new bunch of actors.
I would hate for disney to have made a kind of Star wars universe 'Expendibles' where all the old guys come together for one final mission or some such nonsense. It would seem like a cash grab, Having said that, Luke, Han and Leia are so integral to my enjoyment of the OT that it's hard to untangle my feelings towards Star Wars from the OT actors.
Han/Luke could easily play a part as large as Gandalf did in the first Lord of the Rings movie and not overshadow the new kids. and I think Han will, to some extent. However, the cast is massive in this film, so most people won't get that much screen time. I can think of 10 main characters off the bat, while ANH had like 6 main characters with large speaking parts, so already the amount of character building time is like halved....the new characters need more screen time to establish themselves. and we need time to get used to them. so the marketing is fine really.

I'm actually not that disappointed. Now don't get me wrong! I'm gonna scream like a preteen at a One Direction concert when we finally do see Luke, but for now I'm savoring the wait and the teases we're getting. In a way, we are seeing where they are in the story though, especially through the new books. Heck, due to all the comics and books about the three coming out between ANH and ESB, there've been times where I've almost felt overloaded!

But as for why we're not seeing them in the teasers or anything to a great extent, that's because this isn't their story - not entirely anyways. This is a "passing of the torch," more so than any other SW movie. And as @Ralok-one pointed out earlier, wouldn't it be even more disappointing if they showed all of this footage with the original three yet their screen time was far less than expected? At least this way, they're not bringing our hopes up only to crush them (in terms of movie time; quality of the movie itself, while I am incredibly hopeful, will just have to been seen).

Besides, I bet we'll see a LOT more of what they've been doing post Jedi after TFA. :)

TFA isn't about the original trilogy characters. Lucas Film has been very smart in their marketing to reflect that.

Now having said that, I guarantee the OT characters will get hyped the closer we get to release of the movie. Just be patient.

And I think she looked great in the few shots we've had of her behind the scenes. If her role is diminished, it probably stems from behavioral problems on set, though that is only rumors. In fact, the one I worry most about not looking the part is Luke.

But I wonder why we are even discussing how they do or don't look in the first place.

Something I have long disliked about American movies and films is that they always emphasize the young and beautiful, to the point where it isn't even believable. Take the movie Sunshine- from 2007. I simply could not believe that a ship full of twentysomething PhDs was going to save the world. That movie had other problems, but the casting didn't help matters much.

For this reason I also loved the Battlestar Galactica reboot. Adama had to look world-weary for anyone to believe in him. Roslyn had to be older, too. But she was still quite attractive, I thought. Saul and Ellen Tigh- very believable, great roles and they were certainly not kids. Chain smoking Doc Cottle- he's like half of the attending physicians I had during my rotations through Balboa Naval Hospital back in the day. Very, very realistic.

British TV is so much better in this respect. I consume BBC detective series almost as much as I do scifi.Maybe some of this realistic casting will be part of Star Wars going forward, but I'm not holding my breath. Too many Americans in charge, even if it is mostly filmed in the UK.

We all know they're in the film, and they made a highly publicized appearance at Comic Con, as well as Vanity Fair. That's really all the marketing we need. Yeah you could just put out a bunch of footage with them beforehand, but that's not how you build up hype and anticipation for this film. It's been 30 years since we seen these characters, make it mean something when we do finally get to see them appear on the big screen.

They are holding the best for last. The first teaser was just a taste. The second added a little more and reminded us "we home." They are rolling out things in waves. The build up and the buzz has been steady and strong for over a year. The film is still 3 months away. A lot more ads, and magazine articles and late night TV appearances are coming.

I'm into those BBC Detective series's myself something can be taken from them & put into other movies not just star wars, as for Leia's behaviour they'll just turn the camera on & let her go way she wants.

Agreed. They are the ONLY reason I want to see the movie.

    That's absolutely right.

    Agreed.

Agreed. And I have no doubt that her acting will be fine.

Also, I don't care about the new characters yet, and I can't say that I will. Before "Star Wars" came out, did people love Luke, Leia, and Han? No...That's why I think that Disney's marketing has been terrible. And also, I've lost some enthusiasm for the movie because of this.
