The folks old enough to have enjoyed the OT are loyal and are coming regardless the lack of marketing for the Big Three. Disney/LFL is targeting a generation that it just invested 4 billion dollars in entertaining. I have no problem with that.

I honestly do think Disney is doing it's best to make a profit, make a lot of merchandise, make a classic movie that respects the originals, please the old school fans, appeal to the prequel crowd, and ignite the imaginations of new young customers and fans; in that order.

I really do think they are doing everything they can to make a great Star Wars film. They kept Kennedy and her crews, they hired the visionary sci-fi director in Abrams, they brought back the original big 3 and the rest of the OT gang, they hired Kasdan from the originals, they hired the legendary John Williams to come back, they got Drew for the artwork, they're investing in practical effects to look right...I mean they really have done everything I would have done to make a great movie. If we do or do not like the new story, that's personal taste. But we can't say Disney didn't go about it the right way guys.

But WHY is there this lack of marketing for the real STAR WARS heros (No, I don´t mean JarJar) There could not be a better marketing as with HAN LUKE and LEIA ! All we got was "Chewie we´re home" plus the roar .. but instead we got 1000 picures and toys with Kylo Ren and his cross guarded sabre ...and honestly : we still know nothing about him...

I would venture to say that if you are within the age bracket of 10-20, you really don't care or respect who Harrison Ford is, much less Mark Hamill. Disney knows who the future of Star Wars is; the older generations are already on board. While I can complain about not seeing characters I know and want to see, I understand how marketing works. They want a customer for life, not just this movie. If they can create a base of fans for the future of the franchise, then they have succeeded. You must have a bigger vision then just this film; they have 5 more coming, along with new TV shows, cartoons, and a mountain of merchandise to sell for each one, not to mention the theme parks being built. That will require fans and revenue for the next 50 years. Han, Luke, and Leia, unfortunately for us older fans, are NOT the future, they are the foundation of something bigger to come, (not necessarily better, in my opinion.

I really don't care about the marketing. What I do care about is if the big three meet up again in the movie/trilogy. The rumor is that Han is going to die and Luke will only have a small role in the first movie. To me this sounds like there is little chance that the big three will actually meet in the trilogy. That would seriously piss me off. I know the popular opinion on this forum is to be optimistic and ecstatic about the new film but I remember what JJ did to the Star Trek franchise, they made good money and were great action films but were poor Star Trek films, all flash, little substance. I think Star Wars is more JJ's forte so I am partially optimistic and I did like fringe, but I hope this film has heart and that the plot makes sense. I don't want a lot of handwaving like in Star Trek where Kirk who hasn't even finished the Academy but is promoted to Captain.

The whole point is so that you go crazy when you finally do see them!!! You know you'd eventually moan if they did release a lot now and then nothing seemed to be too surprising/exciting in the movie.

You thought Star Trek promotions were unbelievable? Han became a general while frozen in carbonite. Lando became a general five seconds after joining the rebellion. And then there's Jar Jar.

Well I would say they are saving the best for last.

But I think they are rolling the new out because they are testing the waters. If the fans like and approve of how they have made the GFFA look after 30 years it provides a new and approved of by the fan context for the older heroes. Meaning if we like the new designs then its good to put Luke or Leia's face near it. If they led with Luke Han or Leia and people disliked it that would re-introduce them on a down note.

Agreed because there are still many 1st generation fans still around. None of us, including new fans, really know about the new characters. And we won't until we see the film.

Han, Luke, and Leia not being "the future" is fine for me, BUT if they send out Han with his death and him and Leia being estranged before that, it would bother me and many Han/Leia fans. On Twitter, there are many, many Han/Leia fans who do not want to see them broken up in this next film. They're just not on these boards. The 1st generation needs respect for their wishes. Without us, these films wouldn't exist.

I absolutely agree that there are several things I do and do not want to see in the film regarding Han, Luke and Leia, in the vein of not destroying their story lines to bring in the new generation. I want Luke to be powerful and wise, not a crazy wizard still in the beginning stages of his Jedi calling and I do not want the romance between Han and Leia to be brushed aside in the excuse of "creative elements or drama". But I don't think this has much to do with the marketing of the film. I was speaking in terms of getting people to see the film, and getting new, younger fans who will be customers for the next 50 years for Disney, and that really has nothing to do with how they handle Han and Luke, as the new kids don't have the same respect and reverence for them as us older fans do who have grown up with them and watched the films hundreds of times.
