The term Mary Sue is not sexist. A Mary Sue is a idealized and seemingly perfect character and it's not limited to females as a man can be refered to as a Mary Sue as well.

Right - and Daisy Ridley's comment about it indicated to me that she was unfamiliar with the term.

Not going to disagree - at this point, we can all just say yeah she is a mary-sue and like you said that could change by the time we see TLJ in December. From what we saw of Rey in TFA, we're only one movie in just to be fair. I'd rather wait it out and see where her arc goes in 8 and 9- that is we learn more about where she came from, who is she related to and so on and so worth. But at this point, sure we can all think of her character as such whether or not she's a mary-sue and once TLJ comes out...perhaps our views of Rey may be different than how we thought her to be from what we initially saw in TFA.

Sometimes I wonder if the real sexist people are those that call others sexist. I mean, we have had crazy Mary Sue males in movies all the time and we have often joked about them, called them names and laughted at how ridiculously overpowered they are. Anybody remember Chev Chelios from Crank? Why can we all joke about Chelios and make fun of how absurd his character is but if we say that about a woman we are suddenly sexist?

    Crank is your example?

Besides calling someone a Stu or Sue isn't new in Star Wars....I am looking at you Anakin.

Chosen One, Great Pilot and Mech Genius that built C3-PO from scrap metal all before his balls dropped?

Difference is Little Anny supporting cast wasn't degraded just to make him look better.

I have faith Rian Johnson will turn her into the next Ahsoka or Sabine. I disliked them for ages, but eventually the writing for them got better.

I'm just nervous that none of the sequel trilogy films share a writer. Lucas was a writer on all six of his films.

    Does seem a little haphazard.

Although Snips didn't help herself using Skyguy so much in the early going.
That annoyed the heck out of me.

We could call Ellen Ripley from the Alien franchise a Mary Sue. She pretty much got no character development. But every scene where a problem occurs she solves it. Rey at least does have character development though minimal at best but she isn't a mary sue. She doesn't solve every major problem in every scene. Problem meaning; conflict.

She even created problems, for example, letting loose the Rathers that ended up almost killing everyone onboard but our heroes did manage to escape.

Ripley's not a Mary Sue, everyone else just gets killed off when she's not around. So it's not a case of perfection, but plot armour.

Dallas devises the plan to defeat the alien, and Ripley is almost killed several times. In fact, the crew have to save her from the ship's android who's crushing her windpipe.

Ripley surviving is not Mary Sue characterization. It's a horror trope. Every genre has their tropes: horror's is the main character always surviving, escaping etc.

A problem that Finn paid for and Rey solved? Great Example....

Think they will actually let Rey sustain some damage in TLJ? or will Luke fill in for Finn and take Rey's beating for her against the dragon?

Its not negative if she solves it herself and someone else pays for it.

Not true. Once the sergeant dies she solves the problems with zero background of any kind of abilities of where it came from. Mary sue

THIS is a great point, sir. I also don't recall seeing any female pilots out of Yavin 4 in A New Hope. Doesn't mean their absolutely weren't any, but it definitely feels like a somewhat forced "2016 update."

Fun fact: one of the Rebel pilots in ROTJ is female, dubbed over with a man's voice :D.

    I'm not seeing the humiliation.

I think that people miss the forest for the trees with Rey. She did have more skill than Luke per se. Also people focus on the result that they don't see the skin of her teeth nature of the peril they are in. For instance I hear she's a "great" pilot. Who hit the sand a number of times bounced around the Star Destroyer.
