SW is made in a unique way in some places where the passage of time of very ambiguous. The time spent on the Millennium Falcon travelling between Tatooine, the Death Star, and Finally Yavin; The time Luke spends on Dagobah, how long the MF was in the slug making repairs, travelling to Bespin and how long they were there before the Imperials arrived; and the length of time Luke spent with Yoda before catching up with the Rebel fleet in RotJ for example.

In TFA, the time after they get off Jakku and get swallowed up by Han's freighter seems pretty short, but they never address why the FO fleet that is right there at Jakku doesn't follow them after they leave the surface. The time travelling to Takodana, and how long they're on D'Qar, or at the end the seemingly quick trip to Ach-To fit this ambiguity as well.

It could've been anywhere from a few days to a few weeks, possibly months in some instances. I'm sure they will apply this to Rey's time on Ach-To in VIII as well. We'll get to pick up right where we left off, but cut away to some other things going on, like say, showing Finn's recovery process, then we get back to Rey and she's ready to accompany Luke offworld to begin the fight against the FO with Luke's help.

And my hope is they will be like Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan in TPM when we get to that point. I loved seeing a master/apprentice duo saving the galaxy both independently on their own side missions and working together. As long as they don't pick up any slaves or other stray pathetic life forms.

Think of it this way ....

If the equivalent of Pearl Harbor, the UN in full session, the Bilderberg Group and a G20 meeting all got Nuked at the same time the world would plunge into chaos.
It's such ripe fertile ground to tell stories that i would love to see the New Republic and FO all scrambling to regroup... meanwhile on an out of the way little planet Rey begins her training.

Hell- I'd like Rey and Luke return to civilization at the end and get a galactic equivalent shot of the ending of Resident Evil when Alice comes out of the hospital in Racoon City.

I genuinely want Luke's first response to be something humorous. It might show that he's gone a little bonkers out there on his own, also endear him to Rey pretty quickly.

I think someone on here (I'm sorry I can't remember who) quipped "there was a hand as well..." and I loved that. They'll probably treat him with more respect than that though.

I think Ep.VIII will start with a flashback.

I hope it's not a straightforward continuation and Rian has something up his sleeve although I'm sure I could eventually get used to it if this is the case.

    In my head was:
    - opening crawl update
    - pan to new Resistance flagship to Leia/Poe politics/strategy and/or recovering Finn...
    - cut to new location scarred Kylo banter with Hux and/or Snoke...
    - cut to Luke and Rey in dim hut with lightsaber on ground between them

I imagine after the opening crawl, an opening sequence with quick cuts between Kylo Ren being rescued, Finn being treated, and Rey handing the lightsaber to Luke is how the movie will start.

I wonder if there will be a cut scene right after, saying 3 years later or something?

I could see there being a time skip after this scene. I doubt that it'll be that long, I'm thinking more like a year or so. Basically to progress te larger narrative, and to show Finn out of his coma and doing stuff (given how much Boyega has bulked up for this movie, I'm betting he ain't staying in that coma for very long).

I interpreted this to be longer than many people think. Han's reaction to them telling him that the MF was on Jakku implied to me that he did't find them like 20 minutes after they left. Some time had passed and some distance had been traveled.

I agree. Star Wars has always been kind of loose with the passage of time between scenes.

Seeing this news made me write what I think the opening scene could be:

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away...

    STAR WARS

    EPISODE VIII

    OPENING CRAWL
From STARS, we pan down to a familiar planet, when suddenly...

The MILLENNIUM FALCON zooms by, tears our view of AHCH-TO. The ship descends, disappears onto the planet's surface. Looming behind it, a First Order craft follows, fills our frame until we see only black.

    INT. LUKE'S HOVEL - DAY

A smack. An odd-looking MARITIME CREATURE lands on a makeshift table-top. Dead. We follow its handlers frayed fingers up to the INCREDIBLE face of an old, wise LUKE SKYWALKER. From the daily catch, his fatigued eyes wander upwards to the ocean. He sees it, stops cold. We see his expression change from bewilderment, to hope, to grief. Deep in the horizon: a ship he thought he'd never see again. Heading straight for him. This can't be possible.

EXT. AHCH-TO ISLAND - STONE STRUCTURES - DAY

Luke flurries up STONE STEPS towards the PEAK of the island. At the summit, he approaches a flat, protruding stone facing the ocean. A GRAVE. Kneeling down in front of it, he hopes what he felt was wrong. He hopes that an old friend has come back for him. The pain in his eyes tell us everything. Crudely inscribed on the grave, are three letters:

    H A N

    A beat.

Suddenly a noise, someone behind him. He stands, and we follow his face to reveal REY in the background. He faces her, removes his hood. After a LONG STARE, She reaches into her bag and presents to him his very own LIGHTSABER! Amazed and conflicted, Luke remembers. He remembers the lightsaber. The ship that saved him time and time again. His friends. Tentatively he walks to her. Reaches his arm out. Takes what is his. He examines it thoroughly, and looks back up with a shimmer of amusement in his eyes.

    LUKE
    You have the hand, too?

The crawl will be useless then. I think this is a bad start. Let's hope the movie is still good because to be honest, I don't trust Rian. Seen his movies, didn't like em.

Again, people keep claiming that they want Disney/LF to "try new things." And yet they constantly dismiss ideas for new stuff because "SW doesn't do that" or "the films have never done that before" or "the freaking opening crawl might not be exactly like it's been before."

So which is it, do people want them to try new stuff, or not?

I think they might be referring to the actual story and not what's a part of The Star Wars genetic make up ...

On no, that means we wont have a few year passing to show us advanced lightsaber choreography. Here hoping we would do a few years later to show her trained as a jedi.

There can be a really simply solution to having this opening Luke/Rey scene plus the traditional opening crawl with minimal interruption of the otherwise natural and expected beginning of a Star Wars episode.

I had mentioned this in another thread.

Here is a more complete version of that suggestion - a visual sequence:

    . . .

    LucasFilm logo

    . . .

Fade in to a brief Luke + Rey encounter scene - an example:

Rey holds the lightsaber out toward Luke.

Luke: That's yours now, Rey. Keep it safe.

Rey (confused): I... don't understand. And how do you know my name?

Luke: I'll tell you everything. We don't have much time, and you have much to learn.

Rey: Learning? No, I'm just here to deliver a message. The galaxy needs you. We have go to go back. Now.

Luke: Once the time is right, yes. For now, for us, right here, the Force is everything.

Luke motions to her to follow him.

Rey (unsure): Of... course... the Force....

Luke begins to walk down a set of stone stairs.

Rey follows him toward an entrance.

    Rey: What is this place?

Luke: Where it all began. The First Jedi Temple.

    Fade out.
    . . .

Then the Star Wars fanfare and title and traditional opening crawl:

    my extended example:
    https://thecantina.starwarsnewsnet....episode-viii-opening-scroll.9134/#post-254530

    now as an animated version:
    http://www.starwars.com/games-apps/star-wars-crawl-creator/?cid=56d77a51e4b023c1bb4807ec

Continuity from Episode VII can then be preserved, as well as the time jump between episodes.

EDIT: We could theoretically, later, after the initial traditional space scene(s) and action, meet Luke and Rey again, but this time near the end point of Rey's training, as in this suggested scene I posted in another thread.
