Confirmed! Ep.8 begins right after TFA.

Rian Johnson likes jumping around in time. While I believe we may see more of the initial meeting with Luke and Rey. I doubt its the starting point of the story (I'm thinking a flashback) or the story will start with their first interactions then skip ahead in time (a convenient way to do that would be to cut to Finn waking from his coma and he asks how long has it been and he says.......weeks, months....etc). Either way I don't believe the entire film will be spent in the immediate aftermath of the first. However Rian Johnson presents this by the ways I've mentioned or otherwise will be a first in Star Wars.

 

New story - such as no more Deathstarkillers and Stomtroopers. Not tossing the established style into the trashcan. Other movies don't have opening crawls like Star Wars. Take that style away, take the wipes away for example, and what is left? Something that is less special and more like a generic movie it becomes.

They still have to have SOME typical SW tropes. It oh wait---JJ started getting rid of them .

What about John Williams' main titel music? I don't think Episode VIII will skip the crawl just because not enough time has passed- then they would have to skip John Williams main titel as well... I don't think so.

Ya seriously there is no way they are changing this up. I also doubt that the opening scene is exactly where TFA left off, it should already be obvious that Rey's story is picking up where it was left off, but they have to give us something to ground us into the story of the next chapter. So it'll probably start somewhere else before we go back there.

For my part, I thought 'Looper' was a good film, haven't seen anything else by Johnson. I think Episode VIII is in great hands as its predecessor was.

 

Go watch Brick (2005), with Joseph Gordon-Levitt. It was his first film, and it was also really good.

 

If the movie is taking place right after TFA, just call it "Star Wars: The Force Awakens Part 2".

But seriously, some people are going to be against this because it conflicts with what is normally done in star wars.

All I can say is that It doesn't matter to me where Ep VIII begins. The makers shouldn't feel constrained because all the star wars movies are separated by time gaps.
I'm ok if Ep VIII starts right after TFA. If the makers truly feel that this is the best way to continue the narrative, then I'm all ears... and eyes for that matter.

Oh, and I'm also ok if we don't get an opening crawl. If the movie is comprehensible without the crawl then don't include one.

 

We have to remember that we don't know how long of time passed from the destruction of Starkiller base to Rey landing on Ach-to. I would suspect that an old planet in uncharted areas is not a single day trip to get there. It would not be out of the realm of possibilities that a few months passed between the destruction of Starkiller and Rey's arrival on Ach-to. If that is the case then given the status of the New Republic/Resistance and the FO, there is plenty to cover in the crawl. It would also allow time to have passed and have us see what was first said between Luke and Rey.

Makes me wish TFA had ended with Rey flying off. The cliffhanger ending felt... wrong, and so does this.

I think this is well reasoned. Sample crawl. Note that I'm no writer and don't know the upcoming story. "The galaxy plunges into chaos as a war erupts between the RESISTANCE and the NEW ORDER. Two apprentices on opposites sides begin their training."

Isn't is possible that the new film doesn't start where the last one ends? We could get a few scenes with Poe/Finn/Snoke/Kylo before cutting to pick up Rey's story.

 

Don't forget that Rian is doing something "new" .

 

Yeah. And I'm way pumped for it. I think he is a much better director than JJ.

I'll admit it seems like 8 will pick up right after 7. I'm just playing devil's advocate, as there are plausible ways to continue that scene without starting the movie with that scene.

 

This should be interesting. The only thing i want 100% for sure is the traditional opening crawls and such. anything else im game for Im more curious if it picks up on the exact scene or 10 minutes later .

 

VIII can start from the same point in time as when TFA finished without the scene of Luke and Rey being the first one in the movie. It show any number of scenes that are occurring simultaneously to the scene of Luke and Rey and then go to that scene.
