Confirmed! Ep.8 begins right after TFA.

Actually, I remember reading that in between ANH and TESB is 3 years.....and then between TESB and ROTJ a whole year has passed. A lot more time was not seen then what you realize. So, for continuity's sake, I hope they do not just pick up right where we left off. If anything, just show those last moments, and then fast forward 1 year maybe. This is why I kind of wish the movie had ended with the Falcon taking off to find Luke. If they weren't going to have Luke have any lines anyway, then they really could have ended sooner, and made the Luke reveal the beginning of the movie. Kind of like how they should have ended Casino Royal sooner, and had those end scenes really be the beginning of Quantum of Solace.

 

Where did you read that? That doesn't seem right to me, for many reasons. The biggest being, Luke waited a year to go to jabba and rescue Han? Also, if TFA had ended sooner, by your rational, it would have taken a year to go find him?

Several different sources, each a little different. Wookiepedia states 2 years passed from invasion of Cloud City to beginning events of ROTJ. Think about it though, after ESB, Lukd had to heal, progress as a Jedi who can force choke and build a new lightsaber, come up with plans to infiltrate Jabbas palace, get Lando in, place the droids, etc. Plus, the Empire builds a bigger Death Star during this time.

Also not mentioned in the films, but spoken of in the EU, is the time it takes to travel in hyperspace. The movies make it seem like hours while in the books it takes months or longer.

 

yeah, technically, by the time it takes Rey to get to Ahch-To, Kylo Ren's probably been in and out of the bacta and is back on his feet.

time has always been squeezy in a gffa. i don't think it matters, ultimately.
it was more obvious in the PT, but it didn't matter at all in the OT. it probably won't matter much here.

 

There are plenty of rumors going around about the new movie starting exactly when TFA ended. I don't like that idea but that's what the word that has been going around is saying. On a side note, can you fix the title of your post? TFA is number VII and the next movie is VIII.

 

I think Episode VIII will open with the scene from Episode 8 teaser. Luke staring at him and say "Why are you here"
Rey hold breath and confidently answer "I am here to be a Jedi, like my father before me"
Then it cut to Star Wars logo with music theme followed by traditional opening crawl.

That's would be shocking opening and make people want for more.

 

I went for 0-2 years anything longer would be tragedy to catch up on.

 

Right after VII ended. Like, I fully expect the first scene to be Rey's extended arm, offering the lightsaber.

...and then Rey has to go to the hospital for sore muscles.

 

There may be a time jump within the movie. We all know how subtle those are, like in ESB with the Dagobah training/flight to Bespin. Who knows how long that was?

 

I'm thinking that it will take place from the point in time when Rey hands the lightsaber to Luke. That may not necessarily be the first thing we see though. We may first see something else that is occurring at the same point in time. The other thing we don't know is how long it was after the destruction of SKB to when Rey meets Luke. I suspect that is where are time lapse takes place. That allow for things like Finn to have awoken and Kylo making it back to Snoke.

 

Taking into consideration that each SW movie has started with a crawl and then zoomed into space, I think it's more likely that the movie would take place almost immediately after TFA - or within weeks. I speculate that we would see how Kylo and Hux arrive to Snoke's hideaway/or we see a scene with the First Order preparing an assault - thematically that would fit better with the SW feeling, to have a scene in the space. Just my two cents. But it feels right, looking at how all other SW films have started:

I don't personally think we will get to see the interaction IMEDIATELY after Rey meets Luke, but instead it will start off with our first look at Snoke with the pan down to wherever his lair is and then we see Luke and Rey

Hmmm…. it'd say it could continue with the cliffhanger with Rey and Luke as the beginning scene, have some dialogue, then jump a year or two. The opening crawl could come just after that initial scene and there will describe what has been happening on the political front, but also in terms of what Kylo, Rey and Luke, Finn, Leia, KMT and Poe are doing. Rian will come up with something creative I'm sure. My hunch is that there's a time jump within the movie. With Daisy really working out and training hard, and I also noticed on twitter that Mark's hair is brownish in colour at one point, then grey, so there's definitely a time skip.

Could also begin with Kylo Ren's training, then jump to Rey and Luke's meeting. Who knows! Should be interesting though!!

 

If it's gonna start right at the end of TFA then it'll have to open with a shot in space after the crawl. I'd imagine it'd show the Millennium Falcon coming out of hyperspace and landing on Ahch-To. No ship has been shown coming out of light speed at the beginning before and it would be something new and establish the state of where we are in time. A sort of remake of the last scene from the previous movie being the opening scene in the sequel a la Back to the Future II.

 

Was just thinking that, too. Could be a possibility.

 

Hmmmm....ok, you got me on the Death Star. Do you have when that construction began? I don't think it's months in hyper space. They would need food and provisions. And I know every trip and distance is different, but in TFA the falcon hyperspaces (verb?) to maz, they are discovered, and the FO show up. THAT didn't take months. In fact, I can't think of an instance, in a movie, where hyperspace takes months. And I don't think the EU is canon any longer.

Two years between TESB and ROTJ!? Seems excessive, but if legit, than ok.
