I think people need to understand that Just because the franchise is owned by Disney doesn't mean Finn and Rey's romance needs to develop at Hyper Speed like all the countless unrealistic Disney Princess/Prince relationships. I was so glad they nipped that whole Finn lying to Rey thing in the bud because if they had played it out in that cliche Aladdin/Prince Ali lying to Princess Jasmine sorta way it would have been so corny!

Lest my remark be misunderstood - I didn't mean she should have kissed him on the lips - much less while he was comatose.
( That would have been seriously weird ). My apologies if that's the way it came off.

What I meant to say is that by the end of the film, she's not thinking of him in romantic terms, despite their evident closeness. Not yet, anyway.
I got the impression that at this point Finn already sees Rey as a potential love interest, while Rey does not.

But as you say, all this having-a-relationship-with-another-human-being stuff if new to her. I could change - it doesn't have to.

I don't think that it HAS to either, and it might not. I'm just commenting on the ridiculous nature of the "friendzone" thing, because it keeps coming up in various places.

Heck she was going to stay there and DIE with him when SKB blew up (if Chewie hadn't have shown up with the MF just in time).

I voted yes but my real feeling is that they will attempt to establish a more than platonic relationship, but things will get in the way (Jedi Training, fighting the FO, Jedi Code, etc.)

I think Finn has a great chance to end up together with Rey, consindering a lot of relationships move from friendship to romance. But for the story arc, a lot hasn't revealed to us yet, so the story can take any direction.

whether it's subtle or not... there will be a love story throughout the trilogy.

it may be a romance we see on screen, or it might be a romance we (the audience) want to see happen. It could even be something that bubbles along and ends up happening in a future sequel in X years.

after watching TFA i want Rey and Finn to get together. I can't speak for others, but i believe that my want for them to be together is exactly where JJ & Kasdan wanted me to be when the credits rolled.

I honestly don't know what they've got in mind for these characters, but TFA certainly laid a strong foundation for a future romance between Rey and Finn.

On top of everything else, both characters began the film as "nobodys" who had never really been looked upon as individuals, and who had never really seen themselves that way either. Each was basically the other's "first", as far as that goes. So there is a unique bond there in addition to any attraction they might feel for one another.

Personally, I think it would work quite well to have them end up together, especially since Daisy and John have fantastic chemistry together. However, I also suspect that they won't see one another for quite a long time after the events of TFA. Rey's goodbye to Finn in the infirmary at the end of the film sort of telegraphed that. If they have a romance, it's likely to be a complicated one.

the complicated ones get audiences invested.

seeing the popularity of other recent franchises... Disney would actually be a tad naive to NOT go down this road.
I'm not saying i'm behind turning star wars into Twilight lol.. just that it's an audience Disney won't ignore.

just from a Disney perspective, their arguably most popular recent cartoon (Frozen) had some romantic elements but ultimately did away with them (if i remember correctly).

that said, i do think there will be some romantic chemistry in the series. just probably in an unexpected way.

FN.... How about "Finn"? Can I call you Finn? :)

damn you for making me admit to seeing Frozen! grrr lol

nah.. that's all about love and romance. there's love that turns to betrayal, a budding romance throughout and unconditional love between sisters. they cover it with some fancy ice effects... but its all mushy by the end.

hahaha ~ i had to admit it too, right? though clearly i don't remember it well. i just recall being struck by the fact that there was no "obvious" romance or a big fluffy wedding at the end. it was more about the sisters. but maybe that's how i want to remember it?

i think Disney knows well enough that the fans would have a conniption if this devolved into mush. i am all for some light romance, but don't want to see it be a major plot point (Han and Leia were always so perfect).

Would be refreshing if it was not so.

Romance is all well and good but it's saturated in film and TV.

Honestly, I think that everyone involved is deeply conscious of the fact that the sequel trilogy needs to avoid another "fireplace scene."

The trick, of course, is to make any ST romance engaging but not overwrought and maudlin. And it needs to support the story, rather than being the story. That's one of the reasons the Han/Leia romance worked so well. Other than a bit of hamfistedness in a couple ROTJ scenes, the relationship between Han and Leia was light, fun, and yet moving when it needed to be. But it wasn't a major plot point, and I think that's key.

I'm confident that whatever the ST teams have in mind, it will tend to follow this model. Otherwise, as FN-3263827 so aptly points out... fan conniptions shall undoubtedly ensue. ;)

And sand. Don't forget sand. It's coarse and gets all over the place - unlike Padme Amidala, who is soft and smooth.

BTW, good on Chewie for being a fantastic wingman. He didn't HAVE to specifically tell Rey that it was Finn's idea to come back for her. I see what you did there you magnificent Wookie you. ;)

Well, he is the wise Maz Kanata's boyfriend, after all!

Wait, light-bulb! I think I know which couple could handle romantic duties for this trilogy! :D

... and I see there is no Maz Kanata emoticon yet.... :(

So it's my own personal belief finnrey will be a romance by the end of episode 8. Both of them are emotionally at the level children. Finn was raised by military cult and taking his first steps to experience the outside world. Rey was isolated on Jakku for years in a similar situation. They remind me of kids having their first crush and not knowing what to do. The hug, the forehead kiss, awkward flirting is all very childlike. Secondly all those little extra touches in the film were added on purpose. Rey didn't HAVE TO KISS FINN AT ALL. She could just said her piece and left. Same with her wearing Finn's jacket or them having a "song". All of these details could have been left out but were purposely added. Do any change the plot. No. But they lay the groundwork for the next step. When they meet again they both will be a little more mature and understand themselves better.
