My thoughts exactly. All we see is Vader pulling off a few slacker force moves but largely the force is absent from the OT. I think this title simply refers to more action from force sensitive beings and not the force itself becoming "self aware." It's not literally the force waking up as if from a nap.

    I JUST REALISED SOMETHING!

remember when people said that they announce the title like few months before the movie release ? that every movie's title was kept secret until few months before screening? Yeah I think we will get teaser trailer for 100 % either this month or december

Strange title, but I like it!

    My view,

The Force is said to flow in absolutely everything. Those who are Force Sensitive are of course able to feel its presence more so than any other typical being but just because it is 'awakening' doesn't mean a particular individual is going to surface, or re-surface. I'm not convinced it directly relates to one individual, i.e. Luke Skywalker or our big baddie. Star Wars films as we know have always been true to their titles so it most likely means something along those lines but due to the title directly referencing the Force, I would imagine it might be a little more complex than it simply awakening in one individual.

As The Force was 'balanced' following ROTJ, I would presume something has gone down in the years following and suddenly the galaxy is in turmoil once more. This requires The Force to take action and find balance again. I believe it is referencing the galaxy as a whole, not necessarily one individual.

Agreed, I think we can plan on seeing a lot of force users doing their thing in a general sense

Hmmm... Initially I'm not that thrilled. I think the quality of the title will hinge on how it applies to the story. If "the force awakening" has important meaning, or multiple meanings (like ROTJ), then it will be validated. As it stands though, it makes me think of it as more of a marketing vehicle for Episode VII than anything else. It's simple, to the point, and doesn't deter people who aren't the biggest of fans by being something more subtle or dark.

What worries me more than the title is that it looks like they might drop the VII distinction in the marketing materials for the movie. I have no doubt that it will still appear in the opening crawl and on the spine of the blu rays, etc., but I was kind of hoping to see all the promotional things brandish a big VII. Roman numerals are something so unique and cool to Star Wars, that I feel like throwing them out would be a waste.

    Here's my take;
The Force is a LIVING being. It's nano sized & flows through other living creatures(a symbiotic relationship as explained in TPM/1999). Why is it so hard to think or accept that Luke may be "over-flowing" with the Mediclorians to the point that he either; transforms into a new being or excercises the Force out of him and into another spirit.
This being or alien may be evil.

ps: Don't forget Max Von Sydow was in the classic horror film: The Exorcist. :D

Sure they do. Especially for Star Wars. People were filling theaters for the first prequel trailer. They only need to drive up attendance for a week or so. Then release the trailer on the web.

I love it! The title could have several meanings, which excites me, but I think The Force is what resonates with me the most. It's clear the Force is playing a central role, hopefully in a spiritual or magical way (no all-powerful super-duper Kyber crystal, please), not just an excuse for superpowers...and I couldn't be happier!

I like your post but if the title follows the prior titles then I think it means the Force wakes up. TPM had a phantom menace, Senator Palpatine. AOTC the clones really attacked. ROTS the Sith got revenge and wiped out the Jedi. ANH Luke was a new hope. TESB the empire literally strikes back at the rebels. ROTJ the Jedi returned in the form of Luke and Anakin. So if the title follows all of the other titles the Force will awaken from being asleep/dormant I believe.

I hope the movie is more of a new beginning instead of a direct sequel to Return of the Jedi. The title defiantly signifies that.

I don't understand how people can complain about the title without having any real clue as to the plot of the movie. Those complaining about the removal of the 'episode' moniker, I don't know where to begin.

I love the title. I think it perfectly depicts the new Star Wars era. It will be awakened...

I have to disagree with those complaining about the lack of episode in the title, the Title is important not the episode number. Come on which of these tell you what the movie is better?

Phase I complete... for a while year, we have yelled "give us a title"

Begin phase II, everyone all together now... "what the hell does it mean"

We have a whole year to debate

Back in the day (which, I think, was a Tuesday) they used to wrap the title in the Star Wars wrapper... they never put the episode numbers in them. That was part of the new marketing engine... but I am glad that they are returning to the roots...

Listen I think we need more confirmation that The Force Awakens is the confirmed subtitle. The Star Wars Website only shows the logo with no further explanation and a link to the only five official images they have published. I admit that the same layout is carried through each of the movie pictures but I just feel its not happening.
I think they are just announcing the end of filming and stating that the force awakens and this movie will have The Force as the main story piece.
I am betting this is not the title... I think it sends a Blue Harvest wiff out but when the trailer is released we will definitely have a new name confirmed.
But to confirm I actually do not mind it.

Also they are taking the number out because when the prequels hit they won't have numbers. Also when we get past 9 we all want 10 but that could exist in any time line and not be part of the Skywalker Saga

EDIT: From STARWARS.com Episode VII online gallery " On November 6, 2014 the official title of the seventh installment of the Star Wars saga was revealed as Star Wars: The Force Awakens"

So in that same line of thinking than nobody can claim to like it either, right?

So, this sure came out of left field this morning, didn't it?

My initial reaction was that while maybe they didn't knock it out of the park on this one, I'd say it's a solid double. As I mentioned in the blog post, it raises some interesting questions as to its meaning and so forth, and I'll admit that it does smack just a wee bit of a marketing reference to the rebirth of the SW franchise.

But overall I like it. I certainly didn't react this well to the title announcements for TPM or AOTC. "Revenge of the Sith" sounded just fine to me the first time I heard it. But the others... not so much. "The Phantom Menace" sounded to me like an old half-assed B-movie horror flick that MST3K would go to town on (how prescient that was, too!) and "Attack of the Clones"... well, I had about the same reaction to that announcement that Ewan MacGregor did.
    Remember that?

The Force Awakens, though, isn't a bad title at all. It does sound a little safe and bland, but then again what would we have thought of "A New Hope" if that had been released as the official movie name when the film came out? The Force Awakens creates an image of something stirring after a long dormancy, which seems to go along with the general gist of the movie as we currently understand it (okay, well I've been dodging spoilers like gym class murder balls, so maybe a lot of you have a better handle on what the movie will be than I do.)

But still, the title sounds just fine to me. And if the movie is great, then the title will carry a lot more positive weight, right?
