Episode VIII Production Announcement Video Discussion

Is Kelly Marie Tran's character supposed to be Finn's alleged new "love interest", or is that love interest gone after the major script rewrite that Disney ordered in January ?

I don't think they are showing actual episode 8 content, they could but the will not spoil images of a movie that only comes out in a year and 10 months. I think it is more to get us exited, showing us Luke and Rey. We only know that we will go back to Ach-To in the movie, that's it. So I do not believe, with the images provided, that VIII wil continue where VII ended.

 

The video says "welcome to Episode VIII." Also they did say that Rian had some stuff in his script that surprised even JJ, KK, and co. And A LOT of people want to hear Luke and Rey's first conversation, so it'd be ashame to just skip over it (you could always do a time skip AFTER that conversation happens).

In the announcement video... that isn't actual footage from Episode VIII, right?

If Episode VIII begins just where TFA left off, not only would that be weird, what would be the purpose of the opening crawl?

 

The video certainly makes it look like the story picks up immediately, and knowing that they have already filmed scenes on the island would tend to back that up. You're right about the crawl, but I hope they wouldn't sacrifice elements of the story for the sake of the crawl. If something important happens between the Luke and Rey in that moment, we should see it.

But there will probably be a time jump, even if it happens five minutes in. We won't have a whole movie of Rey training, and Finn needs time to heal.

 

Not necessarily. The first scene could be something else, perhaps the evacuation of the Resistance base or a scene with Kylo and Snoke. Then the second or third scene could pick up with Rey and Luke.

This made me excited for more spoilers! I'm back! Bring it on spies!

 

If they wanted they could change up the formula a little bit. Have a small scene after the Lucasfilm logo picking up right after TFA. They talk for awhile, Luke says something like "Let's start your training", music explodes and we cut the Star Wars logo/crawl, with the rest of the movie taking place after the time jump.

 

SPECULATION: What if this island scene with Luke and Rey is a flashback scene in VIII? It may not necessarily be the first scene of the film

 

Wait.... so the movie will potentially open immediately after TFA? Unless this is a flash back, this is a new thing for Star Wars. Every other film had gaps of several years between them.

 

A time jump would do miracles to the movie and its pacing if done right. TFA completley failed in transporting any of this, thanks to the directing "skills" of JJ Abrams. I hope they'll include one, in the beginning or somewhere in the middle of the movie. It doesn't has to be literal, it can be vague like in TESB when you don't really know how much time lapsed from Luke being trained at Dagobah and Han, Leia and co. travelling to Bespin but time did lapse and you had the appropriate room for character development.

I agree, as this is much in line with what I proposed on the first page of this thread.

Come to think of it, the scene I alluded to there could have also worked as a post-credits scene in The Force Awakens. Well, too late for the movie version, but still time for the DVD/Blu-ray editions. That could make a nice little bonus on The Force Awakens DVD/Blu-ray release.

Now, as for what could happen after this brief scene and the opening crawl, we could see Kylo and The Knights of Ren tearing through the galaxy in different locations when all of a sudden he (paralleling Vader in The Empire Strikes Back) concludes (based on a Force sensation or an Imperial Probe Droid even) that Luke and Rey are on Ahch-To: "That's it. They're there. Set a course! Inform Supreme Leader Snoke we have located Skywalker and the girl."

Then the film could cut to some training / departure scenes for Luke and Rey, as I proposed in another thread:

• Luke training Rey (and Rey revealing she is his daughter)
• Rey lifting a ship out of the ocean (paralleling Luke and his X-Wing on Dagobah)

The example training scene I presented could give a sense of some deeper relationship between Rey and Luke while allowing for the immediate introduction of a plot complication: they have been found and now must leave the planet.

Luke and Rey could even have a brief encounter with Kylo or one of the Knights of Ren in a parallel with Qui-Gon Jinn's first encounter with Darth Maul, which ended with a narrow escape.

Lots of possibilities for the storytellers to give us a sense of that first encounter between Luke and Rey without sacrificing anything in terms of pacing.

Imagine it: first, some sense of closure and context between those characters, which was denied to viewers at the end of The Force Awakens, and then the sudden excitement of Rey's journey and Episode VIII getting right into action.

Yeah I thought that people wanted them to "try new stuff." And yet I keep hearing stuff like "they cant do that, SW has never done that before." So, which is it? As stated above, I'd rather they not sacrifice their story just for the sake of the opening crawl off all things:

-The crawl can fill us in on what's happening in the rest of the galaxy (that we didn't see in TFA).
-They can do this scene, THEN the opening crawl, and then a time skip after that (as also suggested above).
-Etc.

 

It looks like the time of day Rey was offering the lightsaber to Luke in VII is different than the one in the video.

Are we suppose to assume that Luke and Rey were awkwardly standing there looking at each other for several hours?

Nope! You are changing too many elements that makes Star Wars... Star Wars.

The entire franchise will implode if they go through with your idea.
