ROTS is my best movie in the entire saga. The intro battle scene made me to realize how the Star Wars world huge is. Sidious's speech is just great. I love the way the movie showed how Yoda and Obi-wan went an exile.

First off, I am going to curl up in a little ball for a few minutes after reading this entire topic.
    ...
    Okay, that's better.
For me, this is picking the one that I find least awful since I don't think any of them are good (and no, I don't say that cause "it's the hip thing to do". I'll go into a convention and shout that I like Star Trek: Voyager better than Next Generation to prove it!).
And the one that is least awful is...
There are several reasons why this is the best prequel:
    1) It actually came the closest to capturing what I love about Star Wars.
The opening scene was just fun. It still had some of the problems that it's predecessors (and later parts of the movie) would have, but I understand what's going on, there's action, adventure, and it honestly felt like Star Wars. Hell, even the brief duel against Dooku was lightyears ahead of what we saw in Attack of the Clones (which I rank as the worst lightsaber duel in the saga).
    2) Stuff actually happened.
The lack of story progress in the first two astonishes me. Due to the fact that there wasn't any more time to waste, Revenge of the Sith had to actually have things happening.
    3) Ian McDiarmid going all out as Palpatine.
Not that he wasn't good in the other films (he was), but here, he just went full on ham. His scenery chewing might be why there was so much green screen! You can tell that he just had a blast on this film and it is infectious.

Also, reading this did make me realize something: The Phantom Menace is indeed better than Attack of the Clones. It is more appealing to look at and while the execution was simply terrible, the seed of a good story is in there. Just bump up Anakin's age (and to a lesser extent Padmé, depending on how much Anakin is made older), bring more of the focus on Obi-Wan, not Qui-Gon, explain the villains better, improve the pacing, get someone who can actually direct actors, and have the whole Naboo invasion be the start of the Clone Wars (tightening up the story), and I could have been good.

Another one for ROTS. It was the only one of the PT I owned on DVD for the longest time. I love the battle between Obi-Wan and the newly named Darth Vader, and how they do the birth of the twins with the birth of Darth Vader as a cyborg. Watching Anakin fall under Palpatine is an interesting story. We all knew it would come to this, and that may have taken away some of the story of the prequels, but it is the best and most watchable one.

I agree that TPM is better than AOTC. It was a pretty decent story, and I felt it to be Obi-Wan's story as much as it was Anakin's if not more so. I love your "edits" suggestions.

    Thank you.
I also find a bit of hilariousness in the fact that Revenge of the Sith is the only PT you owned on DVD when it was the only one I didn't own AT ALL until a year ago when I bought the Complete Saga set*. And it's even more funny to me as the only Star Wars DVD I own is The Force Awakens...only because it came with the Blu-Ray.

*Why did it take so long? I dunno. Partially it's lack of a VHS release and other things kept having priority. If it wasn't for the fact that I didn't have a working VCR any more (meaning I couldn't watch the ones I did own), me having the money needed, and the fact that The Force Awakens was coming out finally led me to going, "Screw this, I'm getting the Complete Saga Blu-Rays!" In the end, I'm glad it turned out this way since the Blu-Rays (baring the Special Edition changes) are really pretty.

I had the DVDs with the "theatrical version" as a bonus. Also have the OT on VHS and a working vcr. Need the blu-ray now, the only one I have is TFA.

I don't think this is the prequel you're looking for...

It's a prequel but the title clearly is indicating prequel trilogy, which Rogue One is not a member. And to be fair, you haven't seen Rogue One yet (though it will likely be better than those three).

I'd say RoTS - Mostly because of nostalgia. I was born in 1995 so I really felt apart of the fandom when RoTS came out. I saw it 3 times and loved it. I remember playing out the whole film with my friends.

Even now that I'm older, I find that the film is so well paced and interesting. Don't get me wrong, there's some really cheesy moments and it's far from perfect, but I still love it.

I loved TPM and AoTC too but just not as much as Episode III. (I'd like to add that I completely agree that TPM is underrated though).

My favorite prequel film will always be TPM. I love the way Lucas sets up his trilogies.
Ironically, many things the "haters" hate about TPM, I found to be original gems:

-politics, including extended quarreling in the Senate chamber. (After all, one must know how the war happened if this is the first chapter to a larger saga.)

-the Jedi Order at their height, (including bickering in the temple, showing their short-sightedness,)

--the narrative concealment of Anakin Skywalker until 1/3 through the film,

    --the toned down action sequences,

--pod racing (humorous, silly, exciting, visually-eye-popping.)

    --classic "Flash Gordon" inspired spaceships,

--possibly the most beautiful planets and city-scapes in the entire saga.

--"Duel of the Fates." The soundtrack was extraordinary. (Even the haters will admit this.)

-- revolutionary usage of CGI (doesn't matter if some of it didn't work, the fact is that they attempted the feat.)

--The wonderful title "The Phantom Menace" which can refer to several characters. (Palpatine? Anakin? Darth Maul?)

--Queen Amidala's dresses (and the classical costumes in general.)

I was born in 1985, and I was 13 or 14 when PTM was released, the same age many nerds were in '77 when ANH came out. One of the greatest memories and times of my life was following the hype and fever building up to that May of 1999. I was the target audience for TPM. It was an exciting time.

I'm sure kids growing up now will have the same fond memories of TFA, but here is the big difference: there was only 10 years since the PT, and Star Wars is now muddled with the bad-mouthed fans and media saying "it's a return to the old era, after those disappointing prequels, yada, yada, yada..." Back in 1999, there was no division, no fans pointing figurative guns at each other's heads, no bickering, no heartache, and no worries. We were all Star Wars fans waiting for the first Star Wars film in over 16 years.

ROTS is arguably the most symbolic of all 9 films (even the ones that haven't been made yet).

Love all three, but this one will always be one of my fav. movies of all time.

edit: Even counting R1, nothing touches RotS.
Easily my favorite movie in the saga, with ANH and ESB.

I voted ROTS. It's certainly the most emotional and the darkest film in the PT (and, for me, the entire six-part saga). The film is shark-like in its focus, bringing Anakin's descent front and centre. I also feel the film achieves the most successful blend of CGI and practical effects.
