If it turns up in the official marketing between now and December, it's not a spoiler. So what these fan sites have is marketing information slightly earlier - not really spoilers.

We will have to agree to disagree. We both saw the movie and came out seeing completely different things. I see nothing in that movie that suggests that she's there as a prisoner or slave.
If he owns her why even offer her trade for the droid? Makes no sense. She's a slave, a prisoner, yet as soon as she leaves the planet, she chooses to go back? That theory makes no sense. It's all about her family. Where as you choose to see her marking her days as a prisoner, what I saw was someone counting the days to see her family again.

Great pictures from Vanity Fair this morning and even better article! Love Johnson's quote about rich assholes! BDT as DJ, hmmm...what could that stand for? Dark Jedi, Double-jointed, deviant jerk????

Oh, and confirmation??? of the Porgs?: "Luke, it transpires, has been living in this village among an indigenous race of caretaker creatures whom Johnson is loath to describe in any more detail, except to say that they are “not Ewoks.”

I don't see her making her days as a prisoner, I see her as someone who is doing what she has to do to make in the world she lives in; she's a survivor, which brings a lot of depth to her character. I, like everyone else, sees her waiting for someone to come back for her. Her reason for wanting to go back is obvious, she wants to be there when they (?)return for her. She's afraid she will miss their return, not because she likes the situation she is in. Your right, it is about her family(or whoever she is waiting for).
As far as the offer for the droid; I believe Unkar likes her and she has done well for him, so he is wanting to pay her for her find(just like all the other parts she brings back to him)...simple trade, nothing more. When said "NO" that pisses him off. Unkar believing everything is his, decides to take it.
Search your feelings Paul, you know the points of view to be true! ;)

There is currently a Q&A on reddit with the writer of the VF article...and Mods, if you feel this post should go in a different thread, please feel free to move.

Here's the link to just his answers: https://www.reddit.com/user/vanityfairmagazine/comments/

    I'll post in real-time:

Hey gang, it's been such a pleasure answering your questions. Like you, I don’t want to know too much about TLJ because the joy is experiencing it in the theater. I already know too much for my own tastes. But I really hope you'll enjoy all the stuff we've laid out for you in the magazine and on VF's web site. Ciao. —David

I spent some time with Kiri Hart, who is the head of Lucasfilm's story group, up in San Francisco, and she said that Rian Johnson was working on TLJ at more or less the same time that Gareth Edwards was working on Rogue One. I don't know that there was creative overlap, but I think that, for the story group, it led to some especially productive weeks and months. The two projects fed off of each other in that regard, energy-wise. As for the young Han Solo movie, I think Rian was too busy with TLJ to cross over into their process. By the way, Kathleen Kennedy told me that we should expect an announcement fairly soon about what the next one-off Star Wars story film will be—the one that will come out (they hope) in 2020.

Adam is very good not only about not revealing spoilers, but also being private and circumspect about his actorly motivations. He told me that there's something within him, personally, that he calls upon to portray Kylo Ren, but that he'd prefer to keep that something private. Extraordinary actor.

Quick programming note from VF: We’ll begin posting web extras tomorrow at 6 AM EST, and continue pretty much on the hour for a good number of hours. Enjoy!

I went to Star Wars Celebration: Orlando and thought two things: 1) This is an incredibly sweet, positive event; and 2) I will never, ever be a cosplay person. Just not for me. I don't even do Halloween. That said, if I were to be a Star Wars character, I would be Yoda. He's what I aspire to be as I get older: wise, gentle, teacherly, and with a bit of the spirit of Jim Henson in him. (Even though Frank Oz does his voice.)

The biggest surprise beyond the huge creative latitude given to the filmmakers that Lucasfilm hires (see my answer to an earlier question) is just how wonderful, how expansive, how funny, and how eccentric a talker Mark Hamill is. I know that he's great at Star Wars events, but to sit down with him one-on-one for a conversation is so unlike what I would have expected. He's an expert storyteller, he does voices (no surprise there, I guess), and—journalist's dream—he expounds at length. Every quotation of his that you see in my VF article has been scythed down from its original 1,000-word version. Also, he was so funny in discussing all the foods that he had to give up to get into Skywalker shape. He went into this reverie about his favorite ice cream, made by McConnell's in Santa Barbara: lemon & marionberries. It's a peculiar-sounding flavor to me, but the way he went on about it, I feel that I must try it next time I'm in California.

In some of the web extras going up on Vanity Fair's site tomorrow, there's a little more on this subject. One leitmotif is that everyone who is not Adam Driver says that Adam Driver is uncommonly intense on set. He's really all-in on becoming Kylo Ren. John Boyega told me that he likes to try to break the Kylo spell by running up to driver and giving him unexpected hugs. But evidently, it doesn't shake Driver.

To be clear, I was not on set - Annie Leibovitz was. However, I was in post-production with Rian. For a look at what Annie experienced, check out this video from the shoot. http://video.vanityfair.com/watch/star-wars-the-last-jedi-on-set-exclusive-vanity-fair

I should add that Johnson really wanted to create something that was visually new for a Star Wars film: a fancy place where the swells of the galaxy hang out. If you think about it, the Star Wars visual vocabulary is full of desolate deserts and frozen tundra and scrapyards full of disused and broken droids. He thought, “Let's go upscale, let's go Monte Carlo!” The result is the casino city of Canto Bight, which you can catch a glimpse of in some of our photos in the new issue.

It's definitely darker. Kathleen Kennedy described the natural arc of each trilogy as “Setup; Conflict; Resolution.” That makes TLJ the “Conflict” chapter. And if you look at two of Johnson's movies, Brick and Looper, they have a dark, dystopian quality to them. But also a lot of humor. Johnson is aware that his movie by its very nature is dark—he used the word “operatic” with me—but he is also conscious of not wanting it to be a “dirge.” So he has gone out of his way to leaven the movie with humor. I don't know exactly how, but he says there's a lot of humor in the film.

I asked Rian Johnson about Snoke—Who/what is he?—and Rian was fairly up front in saying that Snoke is not a character he particularly gets into in TLJ. Hmmm.

When I was doing these interviews, it was still Feb, March, April, and bear in mind that Carrie Fisher died only on Dec 27—still not that long ago. So it was a little heavy, dealing with people who are grieving but have to get back to work. The original plan was, as Kathleen Kennedy put it, for Episode IX to be “Carrie’s film,” in the sense that VII was Harrison Ford's film and VIII is Mark Hamill's film. As I was speaking with Kennedy, she said that Colin Trevorrow and the Lucasfilm Story Group were working on reconceiving the Episode IX script. I don't think that they would consider recasting the role, and Kennedy seemed emphatic in asserting that they wouldn't use the tech they used in Rogue One to reanimate Peter Cushing's Grand Moff Tarkin. I suspect, though I don't know for sure, that Leia will not appear in Episode IX, and her absence/death will be alluded to in some elegant way.

I can't answer for sure on this one. But the impression I got from Rian Johnson is that he was studying Twelve O’Clock High for aerial-battle inspiration.

I like all the new characters, but I'm particularly intrigued by Finn. Did he really never have a name before? Is there more to that back story? And why did he, of all characters, get to handle a lightsaber in TFA. As you all know, civilians seldom get to handle lightsabers in Star Wars movies. I asked Boyega about this, and his answer will appear in another web extra running on Vanity Fair's site tomorrow.

Well, it's a question a lot of us wonder: What is the meaning of that title? Does “Jedi” work in the singular or the plural? Does it refer to a specific character, and if so, who? I asked both Rian Johnson and Kathleen Kennedy this question, and their amusing and not totally forthcoming but still somehow helpful answers will appear in a VF web exclusive that will be going up on VF's site tomorrow. (Further plug: We'll be posting a lot more in terms of web extras tomorrow.)

Well, think of Kelly Marie Tran, having to tell her own family that she was “working on a project in Canada”? Compared to that, I had it easy. Just had to be vague with my kids, who are big Star Wars fans, and we kept the circle tight even here at Vanity Fair of people who were working on the story and the photos and the art.

I can't speak to the size of Del Toro's part. Johnson kept describing him as “shady,” and Del Toro told Annie Leibovitz and her crew that he borrowed some mannerisms for his character from Tom Waits. The character's name is never made explicit in TLJ (at least that's what Johnson says), but the filmmakers refer to him as DJ, and Johnson promises that we as viewers will understand why he is known as DJ.

Yes, I asked Rian Johnson about this. Specifically, I asked if it is all John Williams in this movie or if there's anything akin to the new cantina song that Abrams and Lin-Manuel Miranda wrote for TFA. Johnson told me that he didn't want to overburden John Williams and was going to get his cousin, Nathan Johnson, who has scored Rian's three films (Brick, Brothers Bloom, Looper), to write some incidental cues. But, to Rian's delight, John Williams said he was happy to do the whole score. So it is ALL John Williams in this film.

Biggest surprise to me is how much creative leeway Lucasfilm is giving Rian Johnson and Colin Trevorrow to write their films and make up plot and characters from scratch. I had presumed (wrongly) that JJ Abrams and Larry Kasdan might have sketched out an arc for the entirety of the current trilogy. But as Rian Johnson told me, it really was a creative handoff—“Over to you, Rian.” And Rian is handing off to Colin Trevorrow in the same way. He said he's made a mess that Colin will somehow have to clean up.

You know there's something funny I find with these "leaks." In the article, it's said that rian has his office a couple doors down from kiri hart and he meets with her team twice a week. With all this right scrutiny, how can things be leaked? I have a feeling that the story group is literally either hiring people to leak or doing the leaking themselves for feedback but only letting certain minuscule details leak such as things about BTS and the way characters look. It's not a bad thing for me but it's just odd how only mainly Jason ward "happens" to get these "scoops" but I'm glad we can read them.

I too have always wondered how MSW was getting all these leaks and have thought there was an insider leaking things to them. Maybe, maybe not, who knows? One thing is for sure, when MSW posted a new leak it's 99.99% going to be accurate. I'm just hopeful that I can resist a major spoiler if they do post them. I did not have that self-control back for TFA.

I'm glad we're getting a better variety of aliens. I just want more of them and less humans. At least for the Resistance, which seems to have more humans than aliens.

So...the Star Wars Show just said that Pablo confirmed that "the blade is no longer considered Anakin's lightsaber by the Lucasfilm marketing department...it has now officially been dubbed 'Rey's'"

who are they kidding? It's as if they are trying to erase the legacy of george lucas and creating their own timeline. they should as mind as well have a "force back" of Anakin going through a time portal, while padme is also birthing Rey, which would happen between TCW and ROTS, and creating an alternat timeline where rey is a skywalker but not Luke's daughter but anakin gave her his saber and rebuilt one within the normal prequel trilogy but the two of them decided to keep it a secret.

    (ackbar)

They just mean the marketing/merchandise makers are branding it as Rey's Lightsaber because Rey is more relevant right now and it's easier to sell **** that way even though it's the same fictional object it's always been.

What is mom and dad more likely to buy for little Becky? Anakin's sword or Rey's sword (even though it's the same damn thing lol).

Considering those are all TFA ships (including Starkiller Base and the snow speeder that was cut out of the movie), isn't that just the Walker from the Hux speech scene?
