Being Luke's daughter and or being Luke's father are the top two theories IMO. I'm going to be on the edge of my seat when I'm watching the movie! Tears of joy if she's Luke's; screams if he is Rey's.

We are dealing with an audience that can't understand the difference between the Republic and the Resistance.. And you want to try and explain that in a Star Wars movie!?

I think I would die if this turned out to be the case.

I'm actually quite surprised at the negativity in this thread and the dismissive attitude.

    This theory:
    1. Ties in EVERYTHING.
    2. Makes sense of the Chosen One idea along side balancing the Force
    3. Reveals why these characters end up going through very similar experiences
    4. Gives a satisfactory answer to how Anakin really redeems himself - after witnessing the PT, it left a bad taste in my mouth that Anakin's spirit was completely redeemed.
    5. Suggests why Luke is seeking out the first Jedi Temple = maybe he has learned about the truth of the Chosen One?

There's so much more. I just found this theory to be superbly thought out. I think it truly elevates the story.
And I was in the camp of "Rey in unrelated to the Skywalkers"/"She's a completely new character". I'm not saying this theory is what is going to happen but that perhaps it should be...

But no thank you. I like the thinking and the idea, but it does seem to go against a lot too. Maybe if it wasn't Star Wars...

It's because the my baby girl theory has much more sense.

Luke changed the jedi code because after millernaries, it was useless.
He abandonned his child because it's the new jedi way or he can't defend her against Kylo Ren ( who later got his ass kicked by ... the baby girl ) ...
He left his only girl with an alien slaver because you know scavenge is a good education.
And later she came back because he neeeded a lift out of his planet.
We'll get a twist we never actually saw : Rey I'm your father ! WOW !

    Awesome theory.

Maybe because some people didn't like the space jesus "chosen one" aspect in the PT and would rather it weren't revived for the ST. I know I didn't and I know I rather it weren't.

Maybe it's not any of it but please let the baby girl thing not happening.

It's the most terrible thing I have ever read. Having the reveal in a musical maybe ? With a song and dancers ?

on the subject of Rey's parentage:-

Colin Trevorrow promised a “deeply and profoundly satisfying” answer.

    he then said..
"Rey is a character that is important in this universe, not just in the context of The Force Awakens, but in the entire galaxy,” he elaborated. “She deserves it. We’ll make sure that that answer is something that feels like it was something that happened a long time ago, far away, and we’re just telling you what happened."

    source: http://www.starwarsnewsnet.com/2016...talk-about-the-mystery-of-reys-parentage.html

i personally wouldn't be profoundly satisfied if Rey was Anakin/Vader/Chosen1. It's fun to speculate of course and i appreciate the work and thought that went into the idea.. but not for me. :)

For some people that's probably the case but I'm not a big fan of Rey Skywalker myself. I'd prefer a Solo or a random and definitely not this Second Coming theory.

As I will be deeply depressed if they change the Jedi Code when attachment was shown to be the source of the fall of Anakin. Just like killing all tuskens and all the galaxy wasn't a big deal.

There will be deceived people whatever.

Sometimes traits skip a generation and resurface with the grandchildren. If i hear the word "midichlorians" in the next film, I might seriously freak out in the cinema.

Not a must have for midichlorians. In Rebels or Clone Wars, we saw a bunch of children force sensitive and their parents weren't. I don't remember Kenobi's parents were force sensitive ( we just don't know who they were and nobody cares ) and so for Ahsoka, Yoda, Windu and 99% of the former jedis of the galaxy. Ezra's parents are not force sensitive too.

The parenthood is pointless in the Force.

"Great job, Attack of the Clones!"

    Please, just no...

Fortunately the Yoda Potato did my day!
Jokes a part, it's a good theory! Whether is this or another explanation, I'd like it to have this mystical side, and I'd love a justification as to why they put her in another desert planet. Hopefully something good is coming :)

    1) Why would the Force create a chosen one to restore balance once but never again?
    2) Can we honestly say Anakin is redeemed at the end of ROTJ after his actions over a lifetime?
    3) Is it not curious that Anakin and Rey share almost identical backgrounds?
    4) Anakin's creation story is canon, obviously - would this really be a surprising story? It fits perfectly with it.

These questions suggest that this theory is far from 'bad'. To call it that is at best ignorant, at worst downright absurd.
As far as I can see, people just don't like stuff like this because it reminds of the PT.

Well, the Prequels are part of the Star Wars Universe folks - along with midichlorians, the taxation of trade routes and sand. Accept it.
