    I didn't say Palpatine wasn't a strong duelist. I said he wasn't a very technically strong duelist.

Obviously, he is a strong duelist, but this is the case because he has a certain advantage- he is lightning fast, probably something that stems from his Force ability. If you watch him duel, his strikes are completely random and all over the place, and he fights as if he has no sense of positioning, maintaining strategic guards, or has any inkling regarding defense. He is just so lightning fast that he gets away with it. He is Juyo on cocaine. But whenever he has gone up against someone who is a Master of the lightsaber- and in particular, someone who is a technical Master who will know how to deal with what he brings- he doesn't get very far when he tries to take people down.

Yoda and Windu are on a completely different level from him as lightsaber duelists, and if he wasn't so damned fast that they had to pay attention to it, they would have cut him up quickly instead of fighting him to a draw.

I would put Obi-Wan on their level as a lightsaber duelist. He mastered Soresu, the defense form, to a similar level to which Yoda and Windu mastered Ataru and Vapaad. He would be able to deal with Palpatine's wild and random attacks. If he can handle Grevious coming at him with four sabers and the speed and power of cybernetic enhancement, he can deal with Palpatine's blade. It's just tthat Palpatine would mess him up with the Force.

I suspect Palpatine would also have a lot of difficulty with Dooku in a duel. Dooku's attention to positioning and precision would be very bad news for Palpatine's wild swings. What's more, Dooku may be able to hold up to Palpatine's Force attacks for some time.

As for Maul, something tells me he did most of his lightsaber training on his own or with droids. Palpatine does not seem like the kind who thinks that the lightsaber is very important and would have less to say than a training droid about technique.

Ah, a vapaad thread. Didn't you know - Rey is a sore Sue. Personally I'd score Yoda 2600 from Ataru.

Anankin was a jedi knight not a jedi master.

Palpatine was the strongest force user in the list and a damn good duelist.

In the Clone Wars he's just schooling and playing with Maul and Savage where Kenobi and Ventress were beaten and had to run away.

He fakes to be in danger by Windu to make Anakin go to the dark side. He's the most powerful human being in Star Wars, always calculating things before others. His plan was almost perfect.

I'm not a fan of this powerlevel stuff, fights are just en expression of internal conflicts + connection to the force, against an outside threat.

    I'm not arguing with you.

The flaw in his plan was his arrogance with respect to the Dark Side. He believed his powers and foresight were unlimited. He could not sense the connection that Vader had to his son (as he could not sense when Luke was on his way to Endor, which Vader did), which meant he could not forsee Vader turning against him and redeeming himself.

Arrogance is the same thing that brought down every pure Dark Sider. Maul thought he had Kenobi beaten and that he was invincible. Then he got cut in half. Dooku thought he could not be beaten with a lightsaber, and then Anakin overpowered him. Palpatine thought he was all-powerful and all-knowing, and he was conquered by something as simple as a father giving his life for his son. It's why every Dark Sider is doomed.

I don't want to play to a tier system, because with the Force increases in power can sometimes be abrupt and circumstantial. Rey's power boost at the end of her first fight with Kylo Ren as an example.

However, I would like to speculate 'how' they will show Ren has progressed since last time. Personally I would love to see Ren using Force Stasis or Force Choking an entire room of people, or stopping several blaster bolts at the same time, to show how he has progressed with Supreme Leader Snoke moving his training in the Dark side along. Force Stasis, while not new, as it's been in the Kotor series, it was great seeing that in Ep 7. Pushing the boundaries of Force powers ON SCREEN. I also would like to see new powers transfer over to canon and the films. Force Wave or Repulse anybody?

I feel like Darth Vader's display of power at the end of Rogue One was to show what a true master of the Dark side can do. Perhaps foreshadowing the untapped potential of Ben Solo.

Are they the only characters we're supposed to care about? Aside from Luke, I'm not really interested in the other three.

Interesting take. I would agree with this. It makes a lot of sense.
