Yeah Tarkin was giving the orders during ANH. Heck he gives Vader a flat-out order at one point, and Vader obeys.

Yes, Leia also spoke of Tarkin's "foul stench". I'd be careful about taking Leia's smack-talking literally.

I would imagine the one thing protecting really Tarkin from Vader (besides their friendship) is that Palpatine would not like it. He's the one who really holds Vader's leash.... but as ESB started to showed us, Palpatine's grip wasn't as tight as he thought.

That doesn't mean that, push comes to shove, Vader can't kill him.

Palpatine was also giving Vader orders, but Vader still plotted against and eventually killed him .

In my opinion the force would be in perfect balance, if there would be peace in the whole galaxy. Intelligent beings that seek for power especially with the help of using the force for selfish targets focusing on their targets without thoughtfulness (suppressing others etc.) causing a disturbance in the force. Therefore in my opinion, the force itself is seeking for highly sensitive beings and as a kind of counter reaction, calls them to stand up against the suppressors because they have violently concentrated too much power.

The force itself awakens calling rey to stand up as its tool to fight back the new threat and achieve peace for its beings. So I think the whole concept behind the physical boundaries is a spiritual one with reminds me on Buddhism (balance = serenity and peace, imbalance = emotion and violence, the force is the driving energy to regain peace). The FO pulled the force out of balance in an unnatural perverted way and the force strikes back once again.. especially through Rey and Luke because of their high force abilities and the disposition of their characters (resistivity against selfishness etc)..

To add, I completely forgot about this exchange between Yoda, Mace, and Qui-Gon. They refer to Anakin as a "Vergence" in the Force. And then they go on to discuss that it is a prophecy that there will be one who brings balance to the force (actually Mace vocalizes what the prophecy was). So apparently even then it was known (at least from a prophecy perspective) that there was an imbalance in the Force. Also I completely forgot that in Episode I, the Jedi believe the Sith are just legend and have been extinct for a millennium.

So now if they think there are no Sith or other Dark Sider Users, yet they know from a prophetic stand point that the Force was said to be imbalanced, then I think I'll go with @oldbert and other's theories that suggest the imbalance in the Force is not due to Force Users themselves (whether light or dark) but how all beings are treated. Still it begs the question, why is one Force User supposed to balance that?

I have seen a couple of theories here (and elsewhere) that Rey is the new "One"... I'm not sure if that will work since there seems to be talk of us finding out Rey's parentage and it being connected to characters we already know. Unless she is also a "Vergence", I'm not sure how she can be the new Anakin, but there's a lot left to explain so anything's possible at this point.

I meant to answer this last night... you are right, we don't know that all the remaining KoR are FS. We don't know if they are comparable to the old Sith, though I think it would make logistical sense for them to be FS

Rey should be the true chosen one simply because it makes sense from a narrative structural point of view. The sequels are the conclusion of the Skywalker saga. Anakin, not the chosen one, went dark but was redeemed by his son, who embodies the light. Rey will embody the best of both worlds. And it is already said by San Tekka that the force is out of balance even though we all thought that Vader's redemption brought that needed balance. Obviously not. Making Rey the chosen one is the only way to offer closure to the Skywalker Saga and to make the sequels stand out as important and quintessential for understanding the roles of Luke, Anakin and Rey. This is also why I seriously believe Snoke is Plagueis. His appearance as the main villain and antagonist to Rey and Luke ties it all up nicely. He created a Skywalker from the force, now his creation will come back with a vengeance in the form of Rey. Mark my words: ......!Rey will bring people back from the dead!........ An idea which had long been circulating with Lucas and the story group. It had already been present with that other Skywalker now declared non-canonical: Cade Skywalker. Plagueis was the other person who tried this and it was the carrot which induced Anakin to go to the darkside. Inserting this into Rey's storyline would also make the prequels more necessary material for the Skywalker storyline then they previously were. Making Rey the Chosen One will in that case also redeem the prequels.

I think it would be cool for them to NOT be FS'S so that Kylo Ren is their true leader .

I feel the exact opposite. I want them to be more than just 7, and for them all to be FS with more abilities that we haven't seen in the SW universe. My whole belief that JJ Abrams specifically says the Knights of Ren aren't Sith, was in part so that they could specifically rid themselves of the Rule of Two restriction. It also allows them to showcase Force abilities that weren't exhibited by Sith (Kylo's ability to stop a blaster rifle round would be a prime example... I loved that). I'd like to see the Ren and the New Jedi do stuff we've never seen before and that be evidence of "The Awakening" in the Force.

There are some downsides to having multiple Dark Side Users, but I like the up sides better.

One specific upside: Mass Melee battles. Not really possible in the Rule of Two era of Sith
One specific downside: some of what made the Sith recognizable and special, was that there were so few and so all of the power and lore is concentrated in a few characters. More characters, more dilution. You always run the risk of having faceless nameless Jedi and Sith being slaughtered in mass melee battle

Well Lor San Tekka does not say the force is out of balance just that without the jedi balance is impossible. GL said lots of things about balance but the idea that seems to bind together what he said best was that Balance was between the Living Force and the Cosmic Force. Because the Dark Side is fuelled by its own selfishness and passion it has a strong connection to the Living Force and if unchecked can endanger the Cosmic Force. Its more like a balance within an ecosystem than a scale. Just as greed and over consumption can destroy ecosystmes, and economies it endagers the galaxy.

Anakin didn't fail he just didn't succeed until his redemption. Say what you want about GL but he said Anakin was the chosen one and that he brought balance to the force changing that destroys the creator's vision of the Saga and Retcons it into something else that breaks the over arching existing story.

The problem with the way in which most people interpret things is "The" chosen one. Mace referred to it as "A" vergence in the Force. So I think the whole idea is more like a cycle than a one and done event. Meaning that while the chosen one brought balance to the force this does not mean things may not ever again be brought out of balance simply that a major rebalancing took place.

This is why the Balance of the Force and the Jedi's role as guardians of peace and justice are so important. In the spiritual sense the Dark Side pulls things out of balance just as injustice, greed and tyranny can destroy lives.

I see this like the weather. There are GOOD days and BAD days with the weather in OUR life. There was a LOT of BAD days out there in the Galaxy in SW.GOOD against EVIL....it must be in balance. If you look around yourself there is BALANCE in EVERYTHING.The force is OUT of control and Luke was trying to keep the balance BUT we all know what happen. The Awaking is the force by itself doing the job...:).

Actually, for all the Force's power....it's pretty weak on its own. It can set things in motion towards a goal, but if an FS doesn't listen to its will (or in the case of a Sith, ignores it altogether), then there's very little it can do.

Otherwise, the Force would prevent Dark Siders from using it altogether.

I almost wonder if the unbalance in the Force is less to do with force users and more to do with the overall state of the galaxy. For instance, when the Empire was doing evil things, it was bad energy for the universe by the damage it did to the peoples. Or with the Starkiller base, it can't be good for the galaxy for suns to be sapped as fuel and planets destroyed.

So while it is more likely for a dark side user to be involved in destruction, enslavement, power grabs, etc., it isn't necessarily the case that a dark side user be doing harmful things? Is the dark side inherently evil? I know Yoda et al felt it was, but it kind of seems to me it depends on how it's directed. IMO, anger isn't necessarily bad -- it can be used as an instigator for change. It doesn't mean that lashing out must follow. And when Obi Wan feels millions of lives snuffed out by the Death Star, that seems like more of a disturbance to the force than when say Luke taps into the dark side to fight.

Does Return of the Jedi tell you that Vader's redemption brought balance in the force? Do the prequels tell you? The only thing we learn from the prequels is
    a. that some Jedi think Anakin is the chosen one, the one who will bring balance in the force.
    b. and that Obi Wan laments: "You were the chosen one".

By the way, if Tekka says that without the Jedi there can be no balance in the force, then it means the force is out of balance. There is no way around it.

Though I very much like your interpretation that the balance/out of balance thing is a cycle. That might be true. Interesting. :)

Evil doers put the Force out of balance. They do this by spreading evil and despair across the galaxy.
Only the Jedi are truly capable of destroying those that wield the Dark Side. When they do this balance is restored.
Balance isn't the destruction of evil or the Dark Side - it is simply balancing it out with the good in the universe.
The Sith/Dark Siders tip the scales towards evil. The Jedi remove this threat and good and evil are equal again.

The Force has gone out of balance again because, as LST says, there is despair across the galaxy. The FO and KoR have enabled evil to run amok.
Planets are falling to the FO. The Jedi have been wiped out. People are fearful. Many are being murdered. Darkness is taking over the light again.
