Of course it's sad that people defend movies that cannibalize the old films and destroy old characters. It's also sad that people like you can't see what's wrong with it. It's sad that film goers have no respect for the original story.

Instead people with this starving consumer attitude -- as though any Star Wars is good Star Wars -- are happy to lap up whatever Disney Wars milks from the old.

This is sad because it's exactly the attitude that will lead to low expectations and shallow, nonsensical filmmaking, like The Last Jedi, which had no story to tell beyond various failed riffs on a vague theme about failure.

And why a theme of failure? Because that's LFL's only explanation for rehashing another Rebels-Empire conflict. And people defend this as though it's interesting filmmaking -- a theme that only exists to justify a rehash.

EDIT: Star Wars deserves to be put into the hands of people who respect the previous story, and who have an idea how to expand the story without destroying the old.

So why do you even have a Kylo Ren avatar if you hate these movies so much?

    Think about it.

It’s the same reason that Ben Kenobi’s instinct told him to kill Anakin Skywalker, who was like a brother.

When Luke looked into his nephew’s mind and saw the horrors of what he could become, his instincts reacted to that person. He saw Ben Solo becoming someone who was capable of murdering and enslaving countless innocent lives or possibly even killing a family member.

Same as his grandfather did before him.

Ben Solo eventually ended up becoming this person in the form of Kylo Ren.

He was part of the hierarchy of an order that murdered millions of people via Starkiller Base and the obliteration of the Hosnian System.

He also ended up killing his father by stabbing him through the heart, you know... Han Solo?

…and even though he did not actually pull the trigger, it was his fighter squadron which destroyed the bridge that his mother was commanding from.

If not for her latent Force powers and blood relation to Mary Poppins... Leia would be dead too.

    Just like Admiral Ackbar.

So yes, Luke’s instincts were to protect his family and friends from the evil that is Kylo Ren.

This brings me to your next point…

It makes plenty of sense, to plenty of people. You’re just not one of them.

Your mind is so clouded by the hatred you have for this movie that you cannot see the obvious.

By killing his nephew, Luke would have prevented him from being a victim of his own evil.

He would have saved him from ever knowing the torment of killing his father and murdering innocents in pursuit of egotistically selfish desires.

There’s even a chance Han Solo would still be alive. He definitely wouldn’t have died at the hands of his own son, that’s for sure.

It could be argued that Luke killing his nephew would’ve been the right choice.

Just like it could be argued that Obi-Wan should have made sure Anakin was actually dead.

Would you take the life of a murderer to save the life of an innocent?

What about to save millions of innocent lives?

How about to save the lives of your best friend and your twin sister?

    Better yet…

Would you take the life of an evil person to prevent them from enslaving the entire galaxy?

These are all questions Luke had to deal with in that moment.

Like anyone in his situation would’ve had to do.

Luke chose not to kill his nephew. You should be proud of your hero.

It does sadden me however that Luke never even got a chance to explain himself or help Ben before he quickly jumped to conclusions and actually attempted to kill his uncle, then ran away to serve Sir Snoke.

    That was a total bummer.

As for this giant block of text…

It’s clear that you are set in your ways and unable to accept the movie as a whole.

Instead of loving it for what it is… you choose to hate it for what it is not.

I'm just very thankful that you didn't write and direct 'The Last Jedi'.

You are truly suffering from your lack of vision.

You are right about one thing, I am unable to accept the movie as a whole because the movie is terrible throughout. You go on about Luke but he is only a small part of what makes this movie awful from start to finish. I will of course expand on why and answer your points when I have more time to do so. My problems with TLJ isn't all because of the plot but also the way the movie was made in general. Just awful decisions were made throughout from the pacing, unfunny and awkward misplaced humour, truly unecessary scenes that were boring and added nothing to the story in terms of making it interesting. I could go on and I will at a later date but this isn't a case of me missing the point this is partly subjective. You either like or aren't distracted by the humour or you dislike it, you like the characters or you don't, you like the structure of the movie or you don't ect, ect. There are many things about TLJ you will not be able to change my mind about and it has nothing to do with simply not accepting it or burying my head in the sand. This runs much deeper to an instinctual degree and when I see or hear things that literally make me recoil in my seat and cringe with embarrasement, that is something occuring before I'm even analysing it.

For the person that rated this as unoriginal, of course it is unoriginal. The fact you've heard it before shows I'm not alone in how I feel about this movie. Well done for pointing out the obvious!

Wow, the mental gymnastics on display here is worthy of a gold medal. If you've got to do more flips than Ep.2 Yoda to justify the hero of the OT threatening to kill his own nephew, in his sleep, maybe the movie has some problems, no?

    I really appreciate that.

Exercising my mind is something I've always enjoyed and found beneficial.

Just like working out my body I find that it helps to keep me healthy, strong and youthful.

What Yoda displayed during that duel was pure skill.

I can only pray that at 900 years of age I'll be able to move the same way.

I remember cheering along with the entire theater during that scene on opening night. It was an awesome experience.

Even now when I watch AOTC it is still one of my favorite scenes.

The true issue for me is the incredibly dull and generic villain that Yoda duels.

I would've much rather he had fought an evil Jar Jar Binks.

    Also...

Unlike you, I do not consider OT Luke to be a separate character from ST Luke... or even from baby PT Luke.

He is the same Hero in my mind.

Luke is human and has struggles of his own, just like we all do.

So there is no justification needed.

    Only understanding.

After that it's your choice to love or hate the person who is Luke Skywalker.

I choose to love him, flaws included.

Same goes for both Ren and Rey.

As for the movie having "problems".

    Sure. I have my criticisms.

Although they have nothing to do with Luke.

...and I would never let them affect my love for Star Wars.

Just like I didn't let them affect my love for the prequel trilogy.

I too, thought the same. I really dont care to listen to the haters of the movie because their Snoke is Mace Windu theory was false. I will pay to go watch every star wars until it ends. I won't throw away my favorite series just like that. However, some parts of the movie were questionable. Such as killing Snoke, Rose, and Luke. I still liked it though, but I guess JJ has a new vision for star wars and im sticking around until the end. Im excited for episode nine.

Couldn't agree more. Unfortunately for us it seems we are on the losing side and I can't see any light at the end of this very dark, narrow tunnel. This is the future of Star Wars. Doesn't it make you feel good to be apart of it all? This brave new and exciting era of Star Wars? We once had a real gem of a (I hate the word Franchise) universe created by George Lucas and now Emperor Bob Iger & his apprentice Darth Kennedy are transforming that Universe into something very ugly indeed. Get ready for the hate ratings and comments. I'm so passed caring now I've got nothing else to lose!

It's also sad when people can't distinguish objectivity from subjectivity. (Especially when those same people do the same thing in multiple threads and give bad ratings to people whose views don't align with theirs.)

One of the biggest problems facing the world right now is that nobody can seem to agree to disagree, even on things such as films. Look, some people feel that these new movies have strengthened the original story and characters. Others feel that the new movies have done the opposite. There is no definite answer as to which side is right. There are many points working for and against both sides.

As to the new movies in general, some people like 'em, some people don't. Just because somebody likes the new movies, that doesn't necessarily makes them some sort of blind Disney "fanboy" who will eat up anything with the Star Wars name on it. Just because somebody dislikes the new movies, it doesn't mean that they are any more or less of a fan of the franchise. Like I said, people just need to learn to agree to disagree,

The reason why you two are getting negative ratings isn't because of your opinion, it's how your expressing it. If you gave civilized reasoning as to why you disliked the film, you'd wouldn't be getting these negative ratings. Sure, not everyone would agree with you, but at least you would have attempted to explain your reasoning. Instead, you chose to use hyperbole, blur the line between objectivity and subjectivity, and just be really nasty in expressing your opinion. If you maintained cordiality and understanding that not everyone will agree with you, then you won't have so many negative ratings and you wouldn't be seen as a troll. It's not too late to change. ;)

For the main topic of this thread itself, I feel that we should all judge each new film based on its own merit. Watch a trailer or two, see if you do or don't like it. It's that simple. Who cares if the new movies are made by George Lucas or Disney or Tommy Wiseau. If you watch the trailer for, say, Solo for example and think that it looks awful, then don't see it. If you think it looks like the greatest thing ever, then go see it. If you do go see it (and this example applies to any movie, Star Wars or not), go see it with an open mind. We're kinda overcomplicating things here guys. (I know us Star Wars fans like to do that, but still. :))

I don't believe I have been seen as a troll at all. I don't think I have received that rating on any post I've made certainly not on this thread. I don't think I've been particularly nasty to anyone. If my posts have had any bite to them I can assure you it has only been in response to people that give as good as they get. I didn't realise that you can only have opinions that everyone agrees with on here or in the manner that only you see fit. My posts haven't attacked anyone directly if so show me. My opinions on this thread have only been about the subject not the individual I am conversing with. I have and I do give civilised reasoning but I realise it makes no difference. I say what I say because I genuinely believe Star Wars under Disney is becoming ruined and it isn't the Star Wars that I enjoy. Surely that is a perfectly rational viewpoint and if you disagree with that explain why? After all this is all fairly subjective right? You either like these new movies or you don't. If I say we who don't like these movies are in the minority and we are fighting a losing battle to change what they are doing to Star Wars well what is wrong with saying that? It isn't being nasty to the fans on here that I feel that way, so why are you trying to twist what I'm about here? I don't appreciate your patronising tone either "it's not too late to change" (wink). Why should I change my opinion? It's how I feel and if the majority want to give me negative ratings on here so be it they are entitled to. I'm sorry if I sound a bit bitter at times but I am passionate about Star Wars. It's convenient for you to take the moral highground when you like these new movies! I wish I loved them too then everything would be rosey but it simply isn't the case. It's not just me that is upset with the decline of Star Wars (as we see it).

A trailer? What good is a trailer? You can make the best trailer or the worst trailer in the world and it makes no difference to what the movie will be like. I've seen some terrible looking trailers in the past but surprised with how good the movie was. With movies like TFA I thought the trailers were intriguing and the last main one sent chills down me. Then I saw the movie.... I'm not saying I won't watch another Star Wars movie at the cinema again but I'll have to see a great many non spolier reviews before I do! That won't be the case for Ep 9. I will not be watching Ep 9 at the cinema. I really couldn't care less what happens next.

I probably won't be adding much more to this thread. It's all too depressing.

If I came off as patronizing, I didn't intend to. Sorry if I came across that way. I was trying to be friendly. I wasn't talking about changing your opinion, I was talking about changing the way you convey it. Actually, a year ago, I despised TFA, so trust me, I understand where you're coming from with your criticisms and I still agree with some of them.

To be honest, I hadn't really read through too much of this thread before my previous post. From your post that I was responding to, it seemed like you were trying to play the "woe is me" card. After reading through the first few pages, I have now seen that I was wrong. You got a lot of bad ratings which I don't feel that you really deserved.

Really, I understand not wanting to help feed the cash machine that is Disney. Back in mid to late 2016, I felt very cheated by them. I still think they're pretty greedy and they are buying up and monopolizing the entertainment industry.

I will concede that you have a point about trailers. They can be really bad. Some can even feature a lot of stuff that won't even end up being in the movie (ahem, Rogue One, ahem). I still think that they are vital in providing at least the tone of the movie. For instance, the trailer for Thor: Ragnarok had stuff that was quite different from the movie, but I still got the gist that it would be a funny, action-packed movie. Usually, they do at least give a sneak peek at the movie, but that's just my two cents.

I'm truly sorry that you didn't like The Last Jedi, as well as you getting a lot of flak for expressing your opinion. I also apologize for mistaking your intent and mistaking you for a troll.

So I've been a fan of the franchise now for 40 years and now I should reconsider it all because an internet thread told me to? :)

    I kid.

Disney has a racist and ugly history. You can't hide that. This is fact. It's been documented in several books and if you want to preserve a pristine image of Disney, don't ever read too deeply into the background and history of Walter Disney. It's a train wreck.

Alas, they also gave us the first feature length film all drawn by hand, he pioneered forms of entertainment we now take for granted. There's been technical revolutions spawned by that company. The amount of people that can ride through the Haunted Mansion ride at Disneyland for example, the way it's designed to do that but still produce a theatrical ride is, well a fine piece of engineering. So you have to marvel at Disney as well.

Also, I'm a sucker for American pop and I've been reading Spider-Man since I was 10 and consider certain Daredevil comics by Frank Miller to be greater than anything he did with Batman. And of course if you pay attention to this forum, Luke Skywalker is my favorite hero in all of cinema.

The thing is Disney owns Star Wars. And even more shockingly, they get to do what they damn well please with it. Art and capitalism have always been deeply linked, especially in the very country that gave us Disney.

So do you join some sort of mass boycott in hopes of slaying a mass corporate juggernaut and convincing them to change the story the way you want it? That's you though right, not the other guy with the bad Darth Plagueis theories? Which guy exactly? The one who thinks the Princess Leia novel should have been woven more into the sequel and insists Thrawn be the central villain of Episode IX? That guy?

Who knows maybe fans "rise up" and "change Star Wars". I seem to remember a similar rally in 2000 all over TFN.

Just remember, even if you get the boycott to work so flawlessly that the brand changes vector, you'll have no control over where that direction leads either. Mostly, you'll just be angry at something and the opposite of love is not hate, it's indifference. Which means you still love Star Wars and now like a lot of old veterans you are learning how to cope with not loving ALL Star Wars, just the parts that speak to your heart, which by the way, nobody, (not even the old racist jerk that was Walt Disney), can take away from you.

It's not such a bad place to be.

It would actually be interesting to find out how many people who weren't on board with TFA have been brought back in with TLJ. A friend of mine seemed to like TLJ even more than I did and he loathed TFA.

That’s me. Really disinterested by TFA and felt it was a huge disappointment (though liked the new characters). Loved TLJ. I can qualify it though. My hope is that IX is an approvement on VII for JJ!

I’d still have preferred a different ST story overall but TLJ salvaged the trilogy for me.

Actually, tbh I liked the movie when I first saw it. It wasn't until around late summer/fall 2016 that I just hated it all of a sudden. I think it was early 2017 that I started to enjoy it again. Maybe it was my hype for TLJ or nostalgia or both. I realized that my problems with the movie didn't hinder my enjoyment, so I went back to enjoying it again!
