The original story about Hapes is not canon, which is what I wrote in my post.

Your comparison with Sleeping Beauty is a lot more vague, but the "stealing" is not the point. The point is that these stories already existed and were very well-written, and instead of using them they are creating vague "copies" of them.

    Basically it is.
Qui Gon had , if we look now retrospectively, deepest understanding of the Force amongst Jedi. Though not fully practicing what we now know about Tide teachings, he was most closest to fully believe in the will of the Force that guides everything. That's why he found Chosen one. Thats, afteral, why he was the first that found way back from the afterlife I think.

The biggest reason was for continuity, because a lot of those stories' timelines overlapped slightly, and some events contradicted others, and remember.....Chewbacca was killed by a falling planet! :)

The only thing that connects these two planets is that they are both isolated communities that are discovered after the battle of Endor. That's it. Their purpose in their respective stories is completely different. You liked these stories - fine. Like them. But in storytelling there are these things called tropes that are repeated across the stories and just because they are repeated it doesn't mean that one story copies another one.

i picked this book up and read the story. here's the deal:

Luke visits a planet steeped in the Force some time post-ROTJ. he has a brief adventure with a 12 year old girl, during which they talk a lot about the balance, about not bending the Force to one's will, and about the importance of protecting peace rather than confronting with violence. then Luke continues on his journey to learn more about the Force elsewhere and the girl says she'll learn more about the galaxy too one day.

    the end.

    did i mention she's twelve? she's twelve.

Of course she's 12 when she met Luke but I don't think @McDiarmid is suggesting that anything happened then. Flux is probably around 20 at the end of the book and she is still looking for Luke : the speculation is that maybe she retrieves him later and something happens between the two (like Rey).

Personally I doubt that Rey's mother will be introduced like that but if it turns out to be the case, I recognize that it would be a nice story.

yes, it's a nice story, but there's nothing really there. we actually don't know that she ever finds Luke or has a daughter.

she has, at best, a 4 year window of opportunity to be Rey's mother by Luke--assuming she needs to at least be 18 for this to not be completely creepy (and even then it's pushing it). that's again, assuming Luke met her immediately after the end events of ROTJ. certainly not impossible, but a total stretch if you ask me. and there's nothing here to "clinch" this as if it's fait accompli.

just another random encounter that you can spin if you so choose.

When I read reviews on the book, I got the impression that Aya was rather young, adolescent. I was surprised to see a theory posited that she and Luke could have been together at some point seemed... shocking, to say the least.

I don't think it's wrong to assume that she admired Luke, heck, even had a crush on him, but Luke is definitely waaaayy older than her, outside the realms of having a relationship. I thought there were some holes in the theory, but this is the nail in the coffin for me. So, thank you. I was going to ask someone to check on that, but you answered my question before I could ask. :)

Sure, but I don't think anyone claimed that we found for sure Rey's mother (ok maybe @McDiarmid make this claim).

Again, I'm not convinced myself : it's just that if at some point we would being told the story of Rey's Mother and how she met Luke, I know that this story would fit the bill for me. The only notable point (the timeline aside) is the fact that Flux comes from a waterworld with islands and it would be an interesting twist if the island Rey sees in her dreams is not Ahch-To, but her mother home planet.

But I agree, it's a very long shot.

No wonder Rey was hidden from Luke and Ben went off the rails! First incest, now paedophilia. What next?

Quick, someone hide Han Solo's corpse!

Yes a child of 12, that, in that moment already could teach Luke some things about the nature of the Force.

He saved her life. It is life-bound connection established already.

It is said she smiles on him. Of course nothing romantic in that moment can happen, jet Luke's visit to her planet motivated her (if story true) to go one day and see the galaxy, and she is talking about her role in the balance.

And than is haevily hinted her to be a young woman ( years later) who told that story, and who now seeks Luke by traveling dangerously in Hutt cargo ship, driven by he Tide (Force), if the story is true. Her eyes became bright when her friend mentions Luke. Subtle...

Young women, human, Force sensitive, from an isolated distant planet, goes to see the galaxy, very likely because of Luke.

What happened to young Force sensitive woman, and why was (if story is true) she introduced in the canon?

Let me ask you opinion please....could Luke took her as apprentice in his new Jedi academy?

Or maybe, in fact, a companion since hardy he could teach her more than she could teach him?

.................I am throwing by brain in trash can now emediately if you can not see any at all story potential in the intoroducing Aya (if the story is true!).

More likely she was Ben's love interest at the temple. Personally I think it's a dead end thinking about it.

I read the book, my point of view is that Aya/Flux was Luke's guide in learning the ways of the Tide( her people's word for the Force). She yearned to see the galaxy much like Luke did when he was young on Tatooine. I believe her main goal is to see the galaxy and pilot an x-wing because she asked Luke what was the difference in riding a bird and piloting a metal bird. Luke indeed had an effect on her so when she finally reaches Canto Bite she wonders if Luke is there because she is told that famous people, heroes, wealthy people all come there. She searches with the Force/Tide and discovers Luke isn't on Canto bite, she says her final farewells to her friends and begins her journey. It all comes down to interpretation. I didn't catch any romantic link between the Luke and Aya, but maybe it went over my head. Great theory though very interesting.

Perhaps my idea of Aya becoming Luke's love is overstretch for many, considering data available from the book (for now).

But we can assemble some very intriguing facts nevertheless:

1.Luke and Aya established connection while she was 12 (he saved her life, than she was his companion in his quest of learning new things about the Force on her planet).

2.Luke was going to start new Jedi order.

3.Aya traveled some years after they met, now as a young woman, for whatever reason, to see the galaxy("civilization") where Luke is.

4.And she is definitely Force atuned.

5.And to repeat -Luke was about to establish new Jedi, and there was a girl that once teached even him the ways of the Force , coming to "his" galaxy.

Maybe I miscalculated something but in this moment my feeling about this facts combined is....

i had a chance to read the overlay more closely to try to get a sense of the timing.
there's no certainty, but the impression i get is that Flux is still fairly young when she stows away, and the fact that they are taking Falthiers to Canto Bight seems to put this in closer proximity to the present day. either way she's not much older than the girl Luke met, and one of the other kids says that no one has seen Luke in years.

it's all hearsay (which is the point of the book), but there's also no suggestion or inkling of romantic love or desire even on her part other than to find an interesting fellow Force sensitive abuot whom the galaxy tells many interesting stories. the structure of the book is more about Luke and the myth he's become and how he's perceived by others. Flux just happens to be perceiving him from the viewpoint of another Force sensitive.

total non-starter if you ask me.
even if she's 20 in the stowaway narrative, she's too young to be Rey's mother.

Actually, the old EU was very well organized and supervised by a special group within Lucasfilm. The contradicting stuff was usually stuff that had been written before the prequel trilogy was finished, and lots of those were retroactively explained in a believable way. It wasn't actually until The Clone Wars series that stuff really started to contradict itself bigtime.

But let's not turn this into a EU vs Nu-canon discussion, it's way too off-topic.

Of course, it's a trope. Just like Jakku and Tatooine are coincidences.

But yeah, of course its possible for the Hapes story to become reintroduced to the nu-canon. You could actually have multiple isolated planets suddenly being rediscovered after the events of ROTJ, and explain this with a cripple in the Force after the death of the Emperor which shook the galaxy. But that's just how I would do it.

    she's still twelve.

and she's yet to find Luke even years later.
she's too young to have been Rey's mother.
she would have had to have had her about 10 ABY
the parenthetical story in this book appears to happen closer to 30 ABY.
the mathematical improbability is high. very high.
