I wonder if Snoke and the 1st Order itself are Palpatine's contingency. There was Order 37, 65, & 66. Stands to reason there was an Order 1. Snoke and some auxiliary forces remained hidden and they would be activated upon the fall of the empire. Gather imp remnant and act.

Eh. Palpatine thought that would never happen. And handing over power to someone else-doubtful. It's too clouded for me-but good theory!

Think of it as revenge contingency more than handing power over.

Like a 'regional govenor' that had direct control over territories. A natual successor should things get blown to pieces.

A regional governor or simple replacement since Sidious is gone.

That was my first thought but all the who is Snoke mysteries have been fun. I just came back to the idea that the 1st Order might simply have taken its name from being just that literally Order 1. Someone else on the forums suggested as much awhile back.

In KotoR 2 there was a character who used the Dark Side to actually hold his body together in one piece. So what if Plagueis did something similar and it just really takes a lot of time to regenerate oneself. Compare it to Voldem.. eerr..., He Who Shall Not Be Named, he managed to regenerate too.
That would explain why he didn't interfere with Palpatine's reign. He was there, lurking in the background, regaining his strength, awaiting the best time to come back.

In fact, there was a contingency:

In the Afermath series, there is a plan in case ol' Sheev would bite the dust. He even used robots displaying his face to reveal (parts of) this plan to a small number of trusted people. This will be expanded upon in the upcoming Battlefront 2 single player story. In the trailer we acutally see one of those robots. It's the character in red, standing on a bridge.

The only reference to Plagueis saving the ones he cared about from dying was when Palpatine was telling Anakin 'the 'Legend of Darth Plagueis the Wise'. Take everything Palpatine says with a pinch of salt, he's playing into Anakin's own fear of losing Padmé and the idea of Plagueis protecting people was probably made up to manipulate Anakin into joining the Sith. While Plagueis may have discovered such a technique it's unlikely he cared enough to protect anyone out of love for them- if he did such a thing it would most likely to keep a pawn alive long enough so they could fulfill their purpose or simply as an experiment.
