Jakku = Tatooine

This doesn't prove anything, it just looks cool and the Star Destroyer is easily identifiable from that angle. It will also pander to any new Star Wars fans who are introduced to the saga through TFA. There are also mountains to the left of it in the Battlefront footage, these mountains are not present in the TFA trailer.

Or it could mean that it just looks cool, and they want to communicate that jedi battles will be in Battlefront.

Spaceships are designed to move from planet to planet, so this means nothing.

Tatooine does not have a patent on moisture vaporators.

There's only so many options people have with pourstone.

Oh, I loved your whole post despite the "No, there is no doubt" in the end. When you say "are you a psychologist?" No, not at all! I'm just "wondering" things, I haven't seen the movie as you do, so it's pure speculation.

Thanks to take your time so that those who are wrong can find it out, but really we're at page 19, if there's no doubt for you, why do you keep reading the thread?

 

I'm just debating, it's all very well making lists of reasons why Jakku could be Tatooine, but half of them are not very strong arguments..

 

I can find stills too.

The big difference is that the residents of Geonosis are insects so their dwellings are very different.


My point wasn't that Geonosis looked similar it was that there was another desert world (Wookiepedia lists it as a desert world). I even pointed out the major difference in the sky.

Again no one is disputing how much Tatooine and Jakku look alike. I brought up Geonosis because it was said there was only one desert world.

There is more to the story;

1- A reason why they call it Jakku now.

2- There are elements of its location in the galaxy or non-visual differentiators that will make it distinct.

Yeah but again, what's the point? This is a question no one is answering. Seventh Star Wars film, totally unpredicted, after three prequels that both Disney and LFL don't even mention because they know they were not great. They have huge responsability, and the first thing they introduce in the movie is a planet that looks exactly the same as Tatooine with a Skywalker kind of character living on it?

 

AND its entire economy seems to be based around salvage.

There are obviously trying to evoke the post apocalyptic angle those are almost always in deserts.

 

They have very talented people to create a post apocalyptic planet and make it different than Tatooine, but that's just my opinion, who knows!

I just really want to read Aftermath because I have the feeling that it will tell us a lot about Jakku.

You mean the one picture from the concept art that is blurry and might be made of metal just as easily as stone.

Stone like the Palace on Naboo and all the gothic arches in the Geonosian caves.

It does look stone. As do many buildings in SW.

My point isn't that things DON'T look like they are pulled from fantasy like the Hobbit. My point is this isn't new. It has been part of the special sauce of SW all along. Its proof JJ gets it not proof he doesn't.

Until either the Aftermath novel addresses it or TFA address this topic, what we currently know is that JJ and Daisy said it is Jakku. Everything else in this thread is just speculation. You gave speculative evidence by showing similar pictures and saying Jakku and Tatooine could be the same place. He countered with his speculative evidence that different desert environments on Earth share siliar features to demonstrate they could look the same and still be different.

No offense, but given that we are all speculating on this, giving the impression his arguement is invalid because Star Wars has never introduced a planet similar to another is just a lazy argument

 

I have zero doubts that Jakku is a new and wholly original planet - but there's no question it was a bit of a surprise that they decided to create another planet with an environment so similar to the single most commonly used location in the previous films. Until Celebration I hadn't even questioned that it was Tatooine.

Since then, I've wondered if maybe it was supposed to be Tatooine originally, but they changed their minds right at the end of pre-production. It's pretty well documented that they were finalizing the script right up until (and maybe even after) they started filming. And by all reports, the Jakku sequences were among the first to be shot. Given all the time they had surely put into character and setting design, I can imagine a sinario where they decided to it was too costly (both in terms of money and time) to completely redesign the planet's environment, and that it would be far easier to just remove any Tatooine specific characteristics (ie Jawas).

Obviously that's pure speculation based on my own inane musings, and probably not even close to the truth.

 

I'm really inclined to believe you. I think that's exactly how it went down. I got no proof, but I feel that's what happened.

 

I think the resemblance will end up being superficial.

I'd really like JJ or Kasdan to come out and say that Jakku is not, never was, and will never be Tatooine. So we can finally lay this puppy to bed.
