Great find. The person who wrote this is right. It wouldn't be a plot twist for most people. I can give a few examples. In both comment sections of TFA teasers, people still write ,, Was that Revan!!!?" although back in November (I think) Kathleen Kennedy revealed those cards with the names so this should be obvious but the people that write this are not ,,fan-boys/girls" because they will know such things. Same like the comments ,,How can Finn be a stormtrooper"? A ,,fan boy/girl" would know this. The prequel bashers(on YouTube) don't give any explanations to what they say. They just say the prequels sucked. No explanations, but the only explanations are ,,CGI,Hayden Christiansen,Jar Jar, TPM etc." . I heard that thousands of times and I'm sick of it.That's why I like ,,The Cantina". We can talk in a civilized way without pointless swearing and spamming. Sorry that I went far from topic. I just had to get it of my chest :D I just personally hate reading Youtube comments under SW videos from the official SW Youtube account.

Jakku is Jakku. Tatooine is Tatooine. That's what it is.

    Of course he's right - he's me!

(Not meant to be overtly vain, just thought I'd pull in a Star Wars quote for good measure.)

I've said this bit before, but i think that the whole thing will end on Tatooine. It's where it all started and its where it'll end.

If I see any reason to Go back to Tatooine I would see it as the Empire wanting to obliterate it in retaliation against LS

Let me be clear that I think Jakku is Jakku, and Tatooine is Tatooine. That being said, there is a plausible way to pull of Jakku being Tatooine, either as a red herring, or a planet renamed after some crazy disaster. Something like a thing called a 'Star Killer' base, that could destroy stars. Maybe one of the suns of Tatooine was destroyed testing the First Order's new weapon, while the planet was on the far side of the other star?

Alternatively for a red herring, it could simply be that the reason we only see the one sun in the sky at 'Jakku' is because the second sun is simply on the other side of the planet.

Or, maybe Jakku is simply Jawa slang for Tatooine?

Bottom line, it is possible that Jakku is Tatooine, but from what we know so far, very unlikely. Tatooine is iconic, but there is room for more than one dessert world in Star Wars.

I've said it once and I'll say it again.

The new poster features two giant suns and a moisture vaporator.

I swear I'm not trying to be a punk about this.. but come on.. The most logical explanation is usually the correct one. Tatooine is bound to have gone through some changes in the last 30 years. We already know a massive battle took place on Jakku. Just look up the before and after pictures of Detroit - places can change - and I certainly don't mean that disrespectfully.

If the normal economy/civilizations on Tatooine were wiped out, I imagine it would look identical to what we've seen of Jakku.

The moisture vaporator is obviously there. A feature of deserts, I suppose. But there aren't two suns there. If you look at the poster literally, there are three suns. If you look at it poetically, there is one sun that's setting. If you try to shoehorn Tatooine's two suns into that poster, I don't see how their configuration is the same as what we've seen from Tatooine before. They don't look like Tatooine's suns.

    That's not Tatooine.

I don't think any of us have a clear and scientific understanding of Tatooine's orbit around its suns. Just as someone mentioned earlier, Kylo Ren isn't surrounded by tiny TIE Fighters - the poster is an artistic representation of the film, and the artist chose to include two giant suns at the top of the poster.

It actually features thee suns, and we already know that Jakku is a desert planet; I'm sure the galactic economy can ship moisture vaporators to more than one planet....

    Fixed it.

This is an important feature of the poster that you're overlooking. There are not two suns on that poster. There are three.

I interpret the third light/vaporator at the bottom can be taken as a separate scene from the two larger suns, or possibly even just a lens flare. It isn't that crazy if you look at it for what it is - Two giant suns. This makes everyone think of Star Wars' home planet.. Tatooine. How could they do this? How could they throw in and copy so many famous elements of this iconic planet and have it truly be a different planet?

I'm not denying that the planet is Jakku. It's just that I believe that Jakku is Tatooine and has been through a near catastrophic experience and was renamed for whatever reason.

What better way to hit home to Star Wars fans? The galaxy has been through a lot - and this will show that.

Or... Tatooine has been doing really well since Ep VI and we'll never hear about it or see it again.

You're admitting that this is an interpretation that you're making, but then immediately thereafter telling us that we need to "look at it for what it is." There's a flaw in that argument. I don't interpret the poster that way at all. If it were supposed to be Tatooine, why be so obvious? Conversely, why give away the secret with four months to go?

I will admit something. There's a part of me that *could* buy into the Jakku conspiracy, because I think that there could be a reason for JJ to hid the identity of Tatooine. That is to hide the heritage of Rey.

I *could* buy into that, except I don't. That would be the same thing he did with Khan, and he said he wouldn't do that again. We have seen a (crude) representation of Jakku from space, and it's not the same place. We have seen in a trailer that Jakku has one sun. It's architecture is different. It's citizens are different.

Honestly, I'd rather that Jakku WAS Tatooine. But it remains that all signs point to them being two different planets.

Artistically, we could view the three suns not as separate entities but as the same sun moving down the page. A setting sun, disappearing beyond the horizon where we also find Han Solo. And this poignant, compositional "decline" (re: death) is further emphasised by the inclusion of the Carbon Chamber stairs to Han's right, referencing the last time the character came close to death himself. A stretch, I know (and possibly way too subtle for a commemorative poster), but seen as a single sun setting this could portent Han's death.

    Pfft, gone too far ain't I?.... :D

Not at all. Wonderfully written. I've been harping on the "setting sun" drum since the poster came out.

It's been said so many times in so many ways: this is a whole new story that just so happens to fall 30 years after the last one ended. Having the story start out on Jakku instead of Tatooine is symbolic of the whole story: it's a new story told in a familiar way, much like how Jakku has familiar elements but is a completely new planet. Plus, as been pointed out as well, the average person won't know the difference anyway; your "average Joe" doesn't know the name Tatooine from Jakku, they'll just see a desert planet and think it's the same as always. It ultimately doesn't matter that it's a new planet, except to those of us who are in deep enough to know.

OR they're using Jakku so that they can do something catastrophic to it in TFA, and keep Tatooine around for another story. Rey will still start off on a deserted planet, she'll still fit that "Luke" archetype, but it doesn't have to be Tatooine. Plus, the crashed ships and such from the Battle of Jakku (distinctly different name than "the Battle of Tatooine") already show that the galaxy has been through a lot. The entire place is a graveyard of the former Civil War; how much more poetic can they get?

There's only one at the top of the poster, then a smaller one in the middle, and finally an even smaller one near the bottom. It's very clearly a setting sun, behind 3 different scenes: largest behind Rey, Finn, and Kylo; middle behind an X-wing squadron, counter-pointed by a wing of TIEs; and smallest (setting) behind Han near the bottom.

@Luuke22, @jmjawors, I think everyone has fantastic opinions - I just feel like we shouldn't totally shut out one idea or another... if there's even a 1% chance that Jakku is Tatooine, then we shouldn't speak in absolutes, unless someone here wrote the script.

Just trying to be observational and discuss the possibilities. :)

Nope. Not too far at all. Artistically speaking, I think the setting suns add another element, as well. The two larger suns create halos of light around the heads of our heroes. Pretty nimbus-y if you ask me. Gotta believe that was intentional.
