It's probably because he's got kind of an annoying voice, at it's painstakingly obvious he's only there for comic relief. Not to mention, that when Episode 1 came out, people knew it would be a trilogy, and were probably worried that Jar Jar would overtake the films. I personally find him tolerable, especially if you go with the theory that he's a sith lord in disguise.

He was a Disney character before Disney bought Star Wars.

Perhaps a lot of people hate Jar Jar, because he is a clumsy character and they are too immature to accept the idea that not all characters in pop culture films like STAR WARS do not possess any "cool factor".

Though I agree he's not a character I like, I think part of the hate comes from the fact that it's the "norm" to hate him already. It's kinda like pineapple in pizza: it's not ok to say you like it even if you do, you just have to hate it because that's what everyone else does.
In general I think this about the prequels. It's now kinda like a FACT that the sequels are bad, so everyone will say they suck.

Why? Because he's the comic relief character that is the least funny thing in the movie. He's slapstick nonsense for babies. He engages in infantile bathroom humor. He alternates between cringeworthy dialogue and incomprehensible gibberish in an annoying voice. And he's in the movie way too long. It has nothing to do with him being clumsy or "not cool." C3PO is clumsy and not cool. He isn't hated.

I think it's more than whether he is funny or not. I think "cool factor" has a lot to do with this dislike of Jar Jar.

I tried many times, but no, i can't like him, in scenes that needed some tension, he was there for do nothing, a poor development.

The people who hate Jar Jar are the ones that have the most to learn from him. That those in society that are viewed as worthless because of intellect, physical attributes, etc etc still have a lot to offer. It says more about the people that hate Jar Jar in that they are missing the lesson that is supposed to be directed at children.

If his voice was different and his antics were toned down a bit, he wouldn't be nearly as hated. Since I was a little kid when TPM was out, he never really bothered me. I didn't really have the context of waiting 16 years for a new Star Wars movie and then seeing... that. I understand the hatred for sure, but I personally don't have any for him. He's just... there.

He wasn't what I had waited 16 years to see but I never really hated him, my excitement had deflated long before he started up with his nonsense. As soon as the Neimoidians started talking I knew it wasn't going to be my day.

I don't *hate* Jar Jar, but I think the reason why he is generally not terribly well liked is because, as others have mentioned, he represents juvenile slapstick for children. The original trilogy has some moments which are very funny, but those moments come from characters interacting with each other. Han and Leia in Echo Base, Yoda and Luke, etc. Not once does the OT try to elicit laughs by a character stepping in "icky goo."

Jar Jar is intended for children. Children genuinely laugh at Jar Jar's antics.
But children don't write on the internets. Only adults do.
    That's all, folks.

If only classical music lovers could write on the internets, then heavy metal and jazz would be rated as "hated music" - just because the one who love them are not the one who let a comm on the forums.

Children young enough to find Jar Jar hilarious pretty much think everything is hilarious though. Not only do you not have to try that hard to make little kids laugh, you also don't have to try THAT hard to get kids to like a Star Wars movie. I think they were a little to worried about the demographic they needed to be the least worried about. No little kid is going to walk out going "I liked the spaceships, laser swords and all that but I think it could have used more slapstick comedy". They could have dialed it back about 1000% with Jar Jar's antics and he still would have entertained children. I don't mind that he was designed to cater to children but it was just such a lazy/ham-fisted attempt that was also totally unnecessary. That doesn't so much bother me either but it prevents me from defending him solely as something "for the kids". Kids probably would have also been entertained by a song/dance number or a spaceship that farts glitter but those things aren't in the movie just because they would have made the kids happier.

Ahmed was just following George's direction. I wish Ahmed the best... glad too see he has someone special to share the rest of his life with. Micheal Jackson (RIP) wanted the role of Jar Jar Binks but I think George felt MJ was controlling the role a bit too much. George introduced Ahmed to MJ as a way to tell him he got someone else to play the role... another of George's 'YES MEN.' I always wondered if George had given the role to MJ, would MJ's input make Jar Jar's character better?
