He used the map to find Ahch-To. LST was originally helping Luke find ancient Jedi lore. He probably helped him before Luke disappeared. LST likely had a duplicate map or just found another one that showed the best or only route to the planet. Jakku was home to an ancient observatory so the map being on Jakku probably links to that.

Luke didn't give anyone a map. We know this as he went to Ahch-To alone and never left. Who'd he give the map to?

Curious how you know that was him fighting another "clan." Why did one member of the clan try to strike the old Rey? Why did Kylo Ren run him through? Why did the lightsaber call to 2 generations of Skywalkers and then call to a nobody who is apparently one of many who are Force sensitive?

Lots of things were shown in that Force vision. Cloud City, Kylo Ren slaughtering someone for some unknown reason, and Rey being left on the planet. Apparently, they had no connection to one another and made no sense, other than to I guess show you glimpses of backstory that are never fleshed out.

There is a reason this story has divided Star Wars fans and only has a 57% approval rating by those who've seen it. The answers to the few questions answered were not satisfying for about half of all Star Wars fans. That's a problem, IMO.

DA, I never thought about that.
Are there any stories out there about LST? Comics or novels.

The clan fight was described in the first leak of the script. It may have been a KoR he killed - perhaps for disobeying him? Rey was just observing the event from someone's pov. Who knows who that was? Might be significant. Might not. But it was never Rey.

It all made sense in regards to how Rey was joining the story. It was all stuff relevant to her journey.

And it is telling that all the negativity is coming from those who firmly believed she was a Skywalker/Solo and SAID they would hate the movie if she wasn't.

They're wrong. They've always been misguided and haven't understood the story being told. 12 yr old boys and girls love it! A few upset middle aged men isn't a disaster for Disney.

Several statements contradict that in both TFA and TLJ.

It was mentioned that he was searching for Jedi artificats true but then he decided to go die? If he wanted to die so badly why would Snoke be so invested in trying to find and kill him?

I thought plot holes, muddled messages, pretentious and pointless sub plots, overuse of humour, misguided tone, mishandled characters, lack of mystery and ridiculous scenes like Leia floating in space would be a big reason.

But Disney is guranteed to make money and as Mark and George say ‘ they only care about your money’

    No there aren't.

He was searching for lore with LST. Then Ben turned and Luke went into exile - seeking out Ahch-To for x amount of reasons. LST knew this was where Luke was going and also knew that "without the Jedi there could be no balance in the Force". So my guess is that LST went out looking for a map to the same place, knew that there might be one on Jakku and then retired there. He later found it and gave it to the Resistance.

Snoke said in the film that he didn't know this was Luke's intention. He didn't know what Luke was up to. Did you miss that bit because you were seeing red about Rey no one?

As for those complaining about people who used to hate TFA and JJ but prefer them after TLJ well Rey says it best.

    After seeing TFA
    ‘That one’s garbage’

    After seeing TLJ
    ‘ The garbage will do’

I was going to post "the unimportance of Rey's parentage is essential to Rey," but you said it just as well, perhaps even better =)

And the "mystery box" reminds me of two things:

    1. The cave on Dagobah: when Luke asks Yoda what's in there, Yoda responds, "Only what you take with you."

    2. Qui-Gon Jinn to young Anakin: "Your focus determines your reality."

So many of the our reactions to any given film are potentially pre-informed, if not mislead, by our individual expectations, assumptions, and conclusions drawn from such things. What we "take with us" into a film can certainly predetermine our reception of it.

Ideally, one might enter a film expecting or assuming nothing, but Star Wars especially with all its archetypes and cyclical aspects actively encourages certain lines of thought and certain points of view.

In remaining focused on what we want -- looking to the horizon a la young Luke -- while forsaking the essential here-and-now, the Living Force, and all that is at this very moment, we can prevent ourselves from seeing more clearly beyond what eyes can show.

Obi-Wan warned Luke as much aboard the Falcon when Luke was practicing with a lightsaber. Our eyes can deceive us. Don't trust them =)

There was even a very clear warning in the final trailer for TLJ: "This is not going to go the way you think."

The Jedi Order of old perished because they could not get beyond what they believed and assumed. This lead to arrogance and their eventual obsoleteness. They could not see the darkness rising right before them because they already decided what they wanted to see.

By the time the deception was fully revealed as of Order 66, it was too late.

Most wonderfully and essentially, Star Wars has always challenged our preconceived notions and expectations and inspired us to move beyond limiting and self-damaging thoughts.

If anything, we should now expect or assuming nothing in or beyond Star Wars: like life and the Force itself, it is ever evolving and not so easily defined or understood, least of all by those who craft its stories.

All of it is really so much bigger than we often realize!

No I thought Rey Kenobi but that’s irrelevant I care more about the plot holes

There are so many plot holes I can’t list them, feel free to google TLJ plotholes no shortage of them I assure you.

This post is a microcosm of what was so unlikeable about the movie, IMO. Two movies in, and we STILL have no idea what is transpiring in the Force vision. We are still just speculating. Creating a mystery for the sake of mystery is ridiculous, IMO. But that's JJ.

With regard to who Rey is, honestly, I could have lived with the answer if the film presented a better story. There were so many things I found wrong about the plot, and so many plot holes, implausible story lines, the lack of cohesiveness and the way characters were written (see Luke) that to me it was simply not a good film. It had entertaining moments, but the plot left so much to be desired. We will just have to agree to disagree on that one.

A wonderful post and you are absolutely right. Especially the part that refers to "what we take with us". It would make a nice thread. For instance I expected her to be a Skywalker. I was wrong. But that doesn't make me hate the movie or anything. I love how they solved that question and it make sense to me. I don't own the story and I know that whatever I project is ultimately a reflection of myself.

Just as Rey in the cave ;)

That was hilarious and so accurate. I thought JJ did a terrible job with TFA but after seeing TLJ I rather have him back.

You've already seen almost everything there was in the Force vision:

You've seen what happened at Luke's temple
You've seen Rey fight Kylo Ren in the frozen forrest
You now know, if its true, that Rey was sold off to Unkar for drinking money
You have seen the Bespin hallway in ESB before

The only thing you don't know is the Knights of Ren sequence. But the vision was showing things about past and future. We might still learn what happened, or better, what is going to happen.

Let's hope that part of the vision had some significance, and wasn't just filler or a lazy way to create backstory.

I have to be honest, after speculating for the last two years, I just don't care anymore. TLJ proved that with few exceptions, what happens in prior films doesn't matter or doesn't have significance. I am apathetic at this point.

I disagree. Everything had significance. As far as the transition A New Hope/ ESB goes nearly nothing had significance simply because A New Hope was meant as a one-off standalone.

His twist in Mission Impossible 3 was interesting. I didn't see that coming. After all, he re-berth that franchise after the terrible 2nd movie.

What was the significance of that part of the Force vision? Honest question. If it's just to help us see that Kylo Ren is really bad, we already had ample evidence of that in the film. Why put that in a Force vision if that's all it's intended to show us?

Agreed on a New Hope, but as you already admitted, unlike in this film, a trilogy wasn't contemplated as here.

To show Kylo Ren is scary. And it links to the journey of the lightsaber.

That Rey's past and future is bound up with the fate of the Skywalker family and hence the greater struggle between good and evil.
