i think its more a case of- it doesn't narratively make sense. Why show us the vision at all? Why show it to Rey? etc

Other than 'The force was just showing her stuff that she'd be involved in.' WHY? Why did Ben Kenobi seem to have a part in showing it to her- other than people one with the force just helping the force do its thing.

Im a fan of Rey Nobody at this point- but setting up random mysteries with no consensus between writers, just creates plot holes and structure issues.

But we already had evidence - ample evidence - that he's scary prior to that point. Why do we need another?

Bingo. And that is my main complaint. The goal in any scene should be to move the story forward. If some on this thread are to be believed, then this is just a bunch of random stuff that doesn't do anything but confirm what we already know, which doesn't make sense.

For me, the more likely explanation is JJ intended more by it, but Rian chose not go expand upon it.

It is? How so? Luke taught her a grand total of 2 lessons, if you can call it that. She pretty much taught herself how to become a lightsaber handler and Force user. I don't see that the vision gives us any of that.

It isn't about her knowing the ways of the force, its the force showing how her past, present and future is bound up with the fate of the Skywalkers and the struggle between good and evil.

    We did. Rey didn't.

It showed that the Force was calling to Rey - that she was important in terms of the story - it set up her link to Ren - it gave her a glimpse into her past that she was hiding from. It was one of the most pivotal scenes in the film.

He didn't. There are quotes out there but I'm not searching for them now. Maybe check out the DVD commentary of TFA.

Had Rey not gone to Luke then she would've learned about what happened to Ren, Luke wouldn't have returned in the way he did, she'd not have grasped a deeper understanding of the past and most importantly, she wouldn't have learned from Luke's failures - the pivotal point made by Yoda.[/QUOTE]

What's so farfetched about former Jedi reaching out to the new awakening in the light?

No different than Luke leaving his training in ESB and to return to back to complete his training in ROTJ to see Yoda nearly about to die and Yoda telling him that his training is complete. Same concept can be applied to Kylo.

Leia scene wasn't silly. It fits in line with what was already established lore in SW and also was seen in TCW and Rebels. Just bringing back Darth Maul was more ridiculous than Leia scene even by SW standards. Also Kanan survived in space too and did the same thing that Leia did.

The fact there will be no 'Skywalker' in ep IX is something that I don't like. This is a story about the Skywalker family, which is why it made sense for Rey to be a part of that family. Or if not, they needed to keep a Skywalker alive for the next movie, which perhaps was their intention with Leia, but obviously that isn't happening.

It's like they shortened the trilogy into a 2-part movie.

So, why would Rey need to be shown that, when a guy with a red lightsaber is coming to kill or capture her in the very next scene? I know you are doing your best to make sense of that to me, but that simply doesn't fit into the narrative, IMO.

As for JJ, you obviously know more than I do about his motivations, so I will take what you are saying - that there was no larger meaning behind the visions. Unfortunately, however, that is even more disappointing.

I suppose Rey learned a few things from Luke, and a whole lot from the Force. I guess I was just disppointed that TLJ turned the whole master/tutor narrative on its head. Apparently, that is not really necessary in Rian Johnson's vision of the Star Wars universe.

All right, better get back to work. Appreciate your perspective. I wish I could say it helped my massive disappointment with the film.

In TLJ, that is clear. But that's not what they said when they embarked on this new trilogy. There's some really weird continuity issues between 7 and 8, IMO.

People seem to forget that JJ was an executive producer on TLJ, and that TLJs script has been done since TFA's premiere (Bob Iger confirmed reading the final script on the plane to London heading for TFA's premiere). Also, we have all seen that Lucasfilm/KK won't shy away from firing a director/writer if they need to.

What I'm trying to say is that this idea of "Rian going rogue and now JJ will fix it" is just an illusion. Make no mistake: JJ Abrams is fully signed in to TLJ's script and IX won't try to "fix" anything because there's nothing to fix.

    Oh, also, about Rey's parentage:
    http://collider.com/star-wars-reys-parents-answer/
To save you the trip, RJ had free will to do what he wanted but "in the end, Johnson’s answer was the same as Abrams’s".

So, like the movie or not, but drop this illusion that Rian Jonhson went rogue. JJ Abrams is fully onboard and so is KK. And if they weren't Rian would've been fired long ago, as Colin Trevorrow was.

Good to know. Indeed, it was apparently a lot of intended misdirection then. Makes for some very disappointed fans, unfortunately.

Yep. JJ is the director of Lost after all. It's his "mystery box", full of riddles that don't always have an answer.
It's like the Knights of Ren thing. You can totally see where it comes from:

Darth Vader was the "Dark Lord of the Sith" (and this wasn't explained in the OT).
Similarly, Kylo Ren is the "Master of the Knights of Ren".
It all rhymes, as JJ liked to say about all things in TFA.

It doesn't personally bother me, and I'm ok with these things being developed off screen (books, videos games) but I agree with you that it's a quick way to create expectations on the fans and then disappoint them. I liked TFA a lot, but IMO JJ does go overboard with the "mystery box" thing and his "rhymes".

I just hope that over the next two years of speculation fans don't start really believing that J.J. will 'save' Star Wars because they disliked TLJ. There is this narrative going around that because TLJ goes in such unexpected directions, Abrams will somehow return it to TFA tone and expected stuff.

Rian didn't back-stab J.J. - Abrams was a part of the process all the way, he execute produced TLJ and read the script before the movie was even filmed, so he knew everything Rian did. And according to his friend since kindergarten, Greg Grunberg, he regretted not directing TLJ because he liked the script so much. So, if J.J. does anything, he will take this chance given to him by Rian to take Star Wars even farther into the new direction. And, if I remember correctly, he already something like that, but I cannot find it right now (if I am correct, maybe someone could help). Anyway, it's something to think about, before we start creating expectations, again.

The irony of this statement is that tons of people are mad about Kylo being the Big Bad because he isn't scary enough.

Actually, Darth Vader's back story was explained in detail. The idea that he was a part of some team of Siths was never implied in the OT or the prequels. The Knights of Ren, on the other hand, who the hell knows? We see them in a Force vision, Snoke mentions them, and then apparently they disappear from the galaxy.

Agreed on JJ. Creating mystery for the sake of mystery is just stupid. Gotta answer some questions every now and then.
    --- Double Post Merged, Dec 19, 2017, Original Post Date: Dec 19, 2017 ---
Well, at the point I was referencing, he was indeed scary. He could do things with the Force previous Force wielders had not, like freeze lasers in midair. But then he got emasculated.

He got beat by a girl with no Jedi training whatsoever, and is apparently going through a lot of teenage angst in TLJ.
