JJ Abrams Says Ep 8 Haters May Be Threatened By Women

Well this is a comment that will definitely stir up some conversation. A report came out yesterday in which JJ Abrams told a reporter his opinions on the backlash to The Last Jedi.

"Star Wars’ is a big galaxy, and you can sort of find almost anything you want to in ‘Star Wars,'” he said. “If you are someone who feels threatened by women and needs to lash out against them, you can probably find an enemy in ‘Star Wars.’ You can probably look at the first movie that George [Lucas] did [‘Star Wars: A New Hope’] and say that Leia was too outspoken, or she was too tough. Anyone who wants to find a problem with anything can find the problem. The internet seems to be made for that.”
    -JJ Abrams

To summarize the rest JJ said the backlash towards Ep8 would not have any impact on the vision he has for Ep9. He also said that SW fans are "an incredibly passionate and vocal fanbase" and everyone has their "own Point of View" about the films.

So I think it's good to see JJ stick up for Rian and Ep8 itself, and I'm excited to see his vision -- because he seems confident in the film he's going to direct. But what's your thoughts on what he said about some people being threatened by powerful female roles? I am guessing he was referring to trolls who admitted to downvoting movie rating sites for sexist or other reasons. But of course with the neverending Mary Sue Rey argument, this comment by JJ may be misconstrued by some. Thoughts?

They could have made Rey a male character and the Mary Sue argument would still apply.

This is the kinda BS I hate. They say this stuff as way to discredit and invalidate those who didn't like the movie. I hated the movie because I thought it was terrible. Terrible story and terrible character choices. Literally has nothing to do with there being powerful women. I hated Holdo, not because she had a vagina but because the character was an idiot. How come people can't just not like it? It's like they feel so high and mighty that the idea they could have made a terrible movie doesn't even occur to them, it has to be some outside force like sexism.

Yeah, it's the same with the 2016 Ghostbusters, female Doctor Who etc. If they keep saying that people, who didn't like their product are "sexist", "racist" or "homophobic", they would start believing it. So legitimate critisisms would be dismissed and the quality of entartainment would decrease.

I realy think Rey is okay and I have no problem with the Rey arc. But I still hope that she is a Skywalker.

it's not Reys fault that "the last Jedi" was a disappointment for me. Nether Holdo, Leia or Finns side kick. It was just a movie that wanted to tell more that there was time for. And a movie that ruined Luke Skywalker.

Wow, what a biased statement. He seems to search for an excuse why TLJ failed and people complained. Yes, there are males who don't like strong women, but this is definately not the main reason why TLJ is as divisive as it is. I'm a woman and a fan for over 30 years. For me this movie destroyed my childhood heroes in a way no movie, novel or other media has done before. Even outside of beeing a fan, this movie is just very bad written and everyone can see this. People who like the movie also see this, but can partly manage to look past it. I can't!!!

Bye the way I cannot find the interview under the mentioned link, but found it here:

I personally liked the movie a lot. And I have no problem with people who didn't liked the movie because of the story, character arc, etc. (I personally hate the Finn/Rose storyline on Canto Bight, how they used Maz Kanata, ...)

But we can't deny that there is a group of people who hates this movie because it features women and a black guy in it's main cast.
If you have read a couple of the RT Audience reviews, you know what i mean (Disney hates men, SJW, bringing politics in SW, ...).

This title is pure BS : that's simply not what JJ said ! Yes, he took a jab against those complaining about "too much female in SW", or "feminist agenda".

But he never ever reduced all the haters to that one category !

Stop twisting people's words and spreading misinformation like that !

In all honesty I won't say so.
Look... I'm a feminist (and I won't explain here why this is not a feminist movie at all but quite the contrary)
However, the point made by the vast majority of those speaking about a feminist agenda, it's not that
there are too many women in TLJ not even that Rey is a Mary Sue because she's a woman.

The point is: you made all the women perfect and wise and all the men idiot.
The second is: you gave not explanations for Rey's powers (or not a compelling one)...
no explanation, not training, nothing... making her a Mary Sue.

One may agree or not, but these are the arguments.
In addition, is not that these are the only criticisms made to the movie.

That said, sure there are people that don't like female characters per se. Even among those who complain about TLJ.
    I don't deny that.
    But these are... few.

And this kind of narrative "only people with problems with female protagonists or women on charge didn't like the movie"
it's how LF and Disney and JJ too (of course) are trying to avoid legit criticisms, to aknowledge them.

    It's called damage control.

    To each, his own.

I personally liked the movie, but I won't push why I liked it onto others, nor disagree with people that don't like it. We all have our own opinions, and I respect that. We all have a choice to watch it or not, along with reading interviews from casts/directors/producers...whatever etc. This is just my personal thought, and not to discredit anyone else's, nor offend any opinion.

Maybe, but not with the same intensity that Rey is being "attacked", or at least it would not cause so many "problems" to that part of the fandom, that kind of people are more tolerant with male characters

    Everybody stop.

    Stop.

These headlines are COMPLETELY misleading. And a majority of posters are running with it. Stop!

In no way did JJ say that haters of the film, in general, are threatened by women, and sexists. He was making very specific comments, about people making very specific claims.

While I still have issues with the point he was making, it is very important to not run with misinformation. That will accomplish nothing more than promoting drama and slander.

Too much of the Cantina did it with Mark (and are still doing it)......please don't do it with this as well.

I like JJ and loved TFA, but his argument makes no sense to fans like me who hated TLJ. I loved Rey in TFA and I was mad that RJ essentially wasted her character in TLJ as she does nothing for the first hour but follow Luke around.

I don’t have a problem with Rose, I have a problem with the Rose/Finn subplot because it takes away good screentime from
Rey and Kylo or Rey and Luke or Kylo and Snoke.

I don’t have a problem with anyone who likes TLJ, but this analyzing of fans who don’t like the movie is sort of insulting.

That Jar Jar said anything at all shows exactly what we've said all along. People didn't like the film and there is an intense backlash against it. This is their way of starting to try to fix that, and you don't have to fix something unless its a major problem. The problem at this point is I saw the article, laughed, and said 'so much for 9'. At this point, they can throw the fans under the bus, society under the bus, anybody they want under the bus. It doesn't matter. The damage is done. By not addressing those issues head on(none of which particularly have to do with females in roles), and fixing some of the problems instead of viewer-blaming... the only thing you'll be doing is convincing more and more people not to see your film.
