Yesterday-friday sough 76 % drop compared to friday week ago.(Box Office Mojo)

Film is masterpiece but it does not hold good at first viewing due to complexity, (my own experience , and reports confirms it).

Rate of going second time to see it is much lower than for TFA and R1.

I think you fail to understand how a business leader’s mind works. TLJ will make a profit for sure. Disney will not look at that and say “we made money, AS YOU WERE!”

They will sit down and try to figure out if they could have/should have made MORE money than they did, likely starting with the budget/planned profit they forecasted for the movie. If they missed that target, they will seriously consider a change of direction because the movie would be underperforming relative to their expectations.

I’m not in the movie industry, but knowing how large companies build up their financial targets/plans for a year, it’s all about how all projects (in this case movies) financial performance roll up together. If TLJ was supposed to make a ton of money to help fill in the gap for a few artsy films that were expected to only make a little, but might get the company press for Oscar consideration, but TLJ failed to make enough money to fill in that shortfall, internally it would be viewed as a failure.

It would still be a profitable franchise, so they wouldn’t kill SW all together, but missing expectations would be enough for a shakeup.

I’ve continued to say that the movie will get a more fair assessment from the fans when it hits Bluray in the spring.

I think both sides are going to the extreme and like everything in life it will fall somewhere in the middle. I think the critics/fans who are saying this is a masterpiece will eventually say, “I like or love it but it’s not as great as I thought.” And I think the other side that is utterly turned off right now will say, “You know what, it’s not my favorite SW movie but not as bad as I thought.” What I’m saying is cooler heads will prevail.

I still blame what we have now between the fans at the early critics reviews constantly comparing it to ESB as it seemed very forced to make this better then it is. I wish the comparisons to ESB would just stop as we are on the 3rd Trilogy and movies are just different then they were in 1980. Very few reviews did a comparison to TFA as that was the sort of context I was looking for to get a perspective before I walked in the theater last weekend.

Critics should have been more public-oriented, and less parroting.

Yes the Film is masterpiece, but for the general audinece its hard to swallow, and its is, actually not that much entertaining exactly because of that.
Public should have been properly prepared by critics.

Some critics indeed have intellectual capacity to tell its masterpiece upon one view, however they failed to omit entertaining factor is low and warn the public what to expect.
Vast majority of critics however are parrots, again translating talk about masterpiece, that omited to say its hard film to swalow.

Lack of honesty resulted in this.

Understanding factor (for public to understand film subtleties) will be low.Nobody of the critics said that.

This way, mob gone to movies only to find their expectations put into dust, and shock effect back-fired.

Critics failed. Not by giving ratings, but by explaining film.

Its juts like saying 2001 A Space Odyssey is film that would take you to your seat and entertain you like enever before, because its masterpice. That is imbecyle thinking. Its masterpiece but not entertaining .Great film, but not for everyone.

I think it’s too early to throw around words like ‘masterpiece’ as sometimes it takes years and time to digest a film. That’s sort of the problem right now as instead of saying you loved it, you are throwing a big adjective that movies like The Godfather and Lawrence of Arabia are referred to.

For example, I love Donnie Brasco and think it’s s great mob movie. But I’m not going to put it up there with The Godfather! Loving a movie is much different then calling it a masterpiece after a few viewings.

77% drop. I'm not happy with TLJ, but it does make me a bit sad to see the film plummet in this way. Hopefully this means JJ will fix what Rian broke in E9.

This is what LFL gets for messing Luke Skywalker up. You can't do that to a beloved character without consequence.

Agree,I am claiming it after multiple watchings which turned me from desperation in to delight over the film.
For instance ridiculed Leia space Walk scene is unseen manouver by the dirrector that will be talked about for years.
Nobody notes details, jet. Her hand..that ring on her hand....that's carried her....scene looks luke Leia poppins, and nobody explain to the public its hidden marvel.

I have always said that Luke, Leia and Han should have had cameos in Episode 7 and let them pass the torch to the new characters for Episode 8 and 9.

Once you mess with iconic characters, you are going to anger someone out there. Right now the OT characters are just a shadow over the ST as fans should be discussing Rey and Ren instead of what they did to Luke.

Disney took a strategy of trying to milk each OT character to sell each ST movie as Carrie Fisher would have been the main focus in Episode 9 if she were alive. They did it purely for Box office because they knew those characters would bring back old fans to the theater who may not be attached to Rey, Finn, etc.

Disney lived by the OT characters for TFA and now it’s backfiring in TLJ for that same reason. They underestimated the fans as Rey vs Ren along with Poe, Snoke, Finn, BB8 would have done well at the Box office for Episode 8 and 9 without dividing the fans as they are now.

Oh, I know how their minds work or better said how shareholders' minds work. But, businessmen might think a bit differently. I have a suspicion TLJ was their investment for the future, a calculated risk. They couldn't keep repeating Lucas's beats, they couldn't retell the stories of EU (even modified) if they wanted to make SW forever - and they want that, do we have any doubt?

I have no kids of my own, but I have many in the family and the second time I watched the movie I watched it in a theater full of kids. They really don't care that much for our heroes, but they are cheering for Rey, Finn, Poe, even Kylo. When Kylo extended his hand to Rey, kids were yelling: "No, Rey! Don't turn to the Dark Side! No, Finn, don't die!" and occasional "No, Luke!" (I suspect good parenting here :D). This is their Star Wars. So, the future, more than Box Office for a single film will tell if the risk and the investment paid off. Considering a good portion of adult audience found complete or partial satisfaction in TLJ, I think it will. But time will tell.

Unfortunately, this is the time we live in: everything is the best or the worst thing EVER. If a film receives 7-7.5 or even 8 out of ten, the screaming starts - 'You didn't LOVE the film!' like that is a prerequisite for enjoying the movie. And if someone says that the film was just O.K., here comes the yelling 'How don't you HATE this piece of garbage!'

It is possible to like or even love the film and still see its flaws. It is possible to dislike the movie and recognize its qualities.

The short span attentions don't help the movie which might require multiple viewings to see all its nuances (or for some, all its flaws). But, I agree, for some people time will temper the initial, gut reactions.

This is an issue with solely comparing the box office from prior years, the entire box office dropped this year.

"Although movie ticket sales in the U.S. and Canada are expected to dip just below last year's record of $11.38 billion, the number of tickets sold is projected to drop 4% to 1.26 billion — the lowest level since 1995, according to preliminary estimates from studio executives.

The falloff in ticket sales can mostly be explained by a handful of movies that flopped, especially during the dreary summer season that posted the worst results in more than two decades. Even such massive hits as “Wonder Woman,” “Thor: Ragnarok” and “It” couldn’t make up for a lackluster summer lineup populated by rickety franchises (“Alien: Covenant”) and poorly reviewed retreads (“The Mummy”)."

    http://www.latimes.com/business/hollywood/la-fi-ct-box-office-challenges-20171223-story.html

lol, I forgot about Mummy and Alien....oy vey....... There was definitely a reluctance to go see films this summer, its too convenient to audiences to wait for most of them to stream.

So..at current trend film could gross barely over 1.billion worldwide.

Someone could pay to emperor Mickey for his lack of vision.

They keep revising down the hell out of these weekend numbers. I've been crunching the estimates in the spreadsheet since Friday and have had to change it multiple times.

We’re talking about in the context of a SW movie and this is not what Disney expected with a movie headlined by Luke Skywalker.

Everyone (not you personally, Disney/CriticsMany Fans) pounded their chest last weekend at the 220 million dollar weekend which was close to TFA, so now they can’t ignore the huge drop in the 2nd week.

I’m not even talking about the quality of the film as it’s all an opinion. But the industry and many on this site dismissed a backlash all week saying it was internet trolls and kids were still in school. These are hard numbers and fans are not flacking back to this movie after a huge first weekend.

If anyone needs more proof about a public backlash in regards to TLJ I suggest that they check out this article from Forbes and the Massive 77% drop the film has suffered...Maybe attempting to destroy everything about the classic films wasn’t such a good idea after all.

    https://www.forbes.com/sites/robcai...-worst-ever-for-a-star-wars-pic/#7664a72357fa

The box office numbers for the second Friday of Star Wars: The Last Jedi are in and they paint a bleak picture for the Rian Johnson-directed sequel. Down 77 percent from its opening day last Friday, the picture continues to distinguish itself as the worst holding film in the Star Wars franchise's entire nine-film history.

From its opening day gross of $104.7 million, The Last Jedicratered by a full $80 million, taking in $24.6 million a week later, on its second Friday.

The biggest prior Friday-to-Friday decline was that of Rogue One: A Star Wars story, at a comparatively robust 68 percent. The three previous films before that, Episode VII: The Force Awakens, Episode II: Attack of the Clones, and Episode III: Revenge of the Sith, all saw declines in the mid-50's percentage range. Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back, Episode III: The Phantom Menace, and Episode VI: Return of the Jedi, all saw far more modest declines in the 20-30 percent range, and the first film, Episode IV: A New Hope, actually increased by nearly 80 percent in its second weekend as the franchise exploded into being (hence the negative 79 percent "decline" shown on the chart below. I should note also that I don't have access to daily box numbers for episodes IV and V, so I substituted their full weekend numbers in the chart).

A few quibbles about the comparisons between films are warranted, as some of the pictures—including The Last Jedi—have Thursday evening preview numbers included in their opening Friday results, making the second Friday a tough comp. And some of the other pictures opened on Wednesdays or Thursdays, so their first Friday-to-second Friday comparisons aren't quite apples-to-apples with The Last Jedi.

But even after adjusting for such differences, The Last Jedistill manages to live up to its title, sitting in last place as the Star Wars picture least capable of holding its audience. Or perhaps more pointedly, in failing to bring moviegoers back for multiple viewings. As Miles Bailey, a formerly fervent fan of the Star Wars films told me, “Disney shouldn’t bank on the hardcore, cosplay, convention crew like myself seeing this film 6, 7, 8, 9 times. Episode 8: The Last Jedi set out to kill everything about episodes 1-7 and succeeded. I’m not excited by Solo or episode 9. Star Wars is done for me.”

With reactions like that, Disney (NYSE:DIS) will need to re-think its strategy for future installments if it hopes to retain a meaningful share of its potential Star Wars audience. As things are going now, The Last Jedi is drifting further away from The Force Awakens' numbers and closer to a Rogue Onesized lifetime gross, a result that would be truly catastrophic given the opportunity lost for the new film and its potential impact on the franchise's future prospects.

That doesn’t mean that the movie won’t be re-inspected in the future and looked upon differently years from now. But right NOW it’s just a movie that doesn’t sit well with a part of the fanbase.

That's sad to me. As much as I didn't enjoy TLJ, I hate to see any Star Wars film underperform in this manner. I can't imagine it NOT making at least a billion worldwide. Sadly, that may be the reality and it won't hit the one billion mark.

That’s true, but it’s also not the discussion that we are having in this thread. When I stated that there were signs that there was a backlash against this film people laughed at me at essentially told me I was crazy and had no idea what I was talking about...TLJ is very lucky it has the X-mas and New Years week to buffer it’s totals or the film would truly be a disaster

I agree with you on some level, but they insulted their audience of 40 years and people aren’t happy about it.
