It's possible that Kylo Ren was trained by Luke.
It's possible that Luke failed to protect his padawans (as suggested in the flashback scenes).
It's possible that Rey's abandonment on Jakku was Luke's fault.

Luke may have made terrible mistakes. If Kylo Ren was trained by Luke (which seems likely given that Luke is the "last Jedi"), that would have scarred Luke indeed. We don't know his state of mind. He's not the same Luke we knew 30 years ago.

"If you leave now, help them you could...but you would destroy all for which they have fought and suffered."

Yoda literally told Luke to let Han and Leia die in ESB and he meant it. And Yoda was supposed to be the wisest character of the saga. Did you guys forget this?

Luke: And sacrifice Han and Leia?
Yoda: If you honor what they fight for, yes!

Luke learned his lesson. He's a Jedi Master now. He's become Yoda. He *thinks* he's doing the right thing.

    Yes.
He believes that his absence helps them more than his presence. Possibly because he fears that the risk of falling into Kylo/Snoke's hands is too great, and that his power could be used against the galaxy the way his father's was. Maybe he blames himself for what's happening.

A-f*cking-men! Exactly, could not agree more. Luke is the greatest Jedi of all time and that there ever will be. I hope these rumors are bullcrap.

    A point I wanted to add before;

    POSSIBLE SPOILER:
A web source(a you tube video, if I recall), showed a recent new holiday toy event where new Disney/TFA action figures were displayed; one was of Darth Vader(!). The other was a TESB Luke Skywalker in fatigues(Cloud City outfit). These toys might confirm or explain the brief flashback or scene with the characters.
The light saber duel may have been witnessed or viewed(plan) by a different character. Hmmmm.....

DUDE. I heard the chains and a man screaming. Holy crap, you MIGHT be on to something. Great catch. I've always wondered if Luke was a prisoner and somehow being used to power up the Starkiller base or something. I just can't buy the whole "Luke is hiding" theory. It just doesn't seem to work for me unless me, unless we learn that Han dies and that drives Luke out of hiding because of guilt, but I think you are on to something. I want everyone to watch the scene he mentioned of the Knights of Ren and listen for chains and a man screaming.

On the one hand you're saying Luke is an all powerful Jedi Master and on the other you are saying he is blighted by the same fears he had in TESB?

Luke going to save Han and Leia was dangerous because he wasn't fully trained and could have succumbed to the dark side!

Are you saying that's why he's hiding now? Because he night forego everything he learned before? This would completely go against the hero journey template. Luke had defeated the dark side in himself. You don't repeat that story.

And if he thinks Snoke can stop him and use him then what chance does he think his friends have? What chance does a inferior Rey have if all powerful Luke has to hide out?

The average viewer won't buy the old hero of the saga sitting by and doing nothing while his friends die. It won't add up. It will make him look cold. It will go against his character.

His fathers power was used against the galaxy because his father turned to the dark side! Luke has gone beyond that.

For me the only explanation for why he hasn't gotten involved is because his powers have been greatly diminished. Now he may or may not (still) be in captivity but I believe the KOR took Luke down. And the reason that he has to train a new hero is that he isn't able to take on the might of Snoke and the FO.

Personally I'd like to see Luke a bit banged up and weakened physically. There is no drama if he is über powerful. Better for him to be vulnerable (like Snoke) but need to pass on his wisdom to his protege Rey (like Snoke to Kylo). Poem. Stanza. Rhyme.

I think the flashback will follow the path of the lightsaber. Bespin into the hands of Kylo to the academy and then to Jakku.

I'm hoping they create a scene where we view the ESB duel from a different perspective. That would be *fanboy alert* cool!

I like this theory, although I'm not convinced JJ and co will take in that direction. It seems too far out there. BUT if I were to entertain the theory...

I also really like the idea of a captured Luke being used to 'power' Starkiller, as mentioned above. Luke uses the force to destroy the Death Star, then through training his force powers BECOMES a new Death Star. Lol. Kinda cool. It adds some extra elements to Leia's conflict about destroying the base, but it also puts Luke in a bizarre sort of personal hell.

I'd buy that Luke was somehow captured, or forced to give himself up. He's obviously a badass jedi but it doesn't seem that crazy to me. If he is the ultimate force user in the universe, what's gonna happen in 8 and 9? Now that they found Luke he just agrees to get off his ass and kicks Snoke's ass over and over? The ST is about the new actors, and the old cast will be playing supporting roles. Also - news flash - Luke's gonna die at some point in this trilogy. He's not gonna be in 10, 11, 12 if they make them. Someone will kill him or he will have to sacrifice himself and one of the younger actors will become the new best hope for the galaxy. That is what the ST is about at the most basic level - passing the torch along to the next generation, dealing with new threats, etc. We have no knowledge of the KoR at this point, there's no reason they couldn't be strong enough to capture Luke.

Lukes not in seclusion. hes definitely more involved than the rumors infer. theyve been pretty relentless in terms of making everything about "where's luke". Jjs career wouldnt survive cameo luke. but i think the way they are marketing the film all but confirms the pay off will be worth the wait.

you make some great points. agreed its againt lukes character for him to hold up with friends in danger. my theory? as it was stated above, i too believe the only relevancy in regards to the saber is for a scene in which Maz uses her abilities to convey SOMETHING to our protagonists, as well as it being a symbol. but i believe by the start of TFA that the FO, Kylo, Snoke have been hunting Luke for some time. i believe Rey to be a Solo/Skywalker who was abandoned on an outer rim planet for her protection. for having her Uncles blood in her veins. aka Vaders blood. i think Kylos motivation focuses in on the skywalker bloodline rather than a lightsaber carrying the plot.

I did hear the chains grating and a man screaming when the KOR were on the screen. Very plausible theory. But maybe the chains were the sound of one of the Knights weapons and the man screaming could be Luke, crying out in agony at the slaughter of his academy?

i think its less about his powers diminishing and more about the threat itself. i think Luke has a plan to save his friends but the threat being so credible, he cannot yet reveal himself until the time is right.

I don't. I believe he is. I was focusing on Rey because I believe she is Luke's daughter and who he is specifically waiting for.

But it sounds like Luke has nothing to do with the attack on the Star Killer base nor does he intervene when
    Kylo kills Han
or when Kylo faces Rey and Finn. If a time was ever right to step in then it is one of those moments!

I just don't see the drama in an uber Luke nor do I see any legitimate reason for him to be in hiding. Hide future Jedi kids maybe, but not himself.
Therefore, no Luke = Luke's beat captured. And new hero = Luke's is no longer powerful enough to do the job.

"Why would Luke be in self-imposed exile though when his friends and family are in grave danger? It goes against the character completely."
Because Snoke, Kylo, The Knights of Ren, and the entire First Order are apparently interested in killing him. He might do more harm than good at this point by drawing the FO right to his friends. And, similar to Yoda and Ben, he is the last Jedi and if he dies so does the Jedi Order. You are also assuming he is the same character that would rush into battle. I think he is more calculating now with everything that happened. The Force is probably helping to guide his decisions too, and he knows it is best to not get himself killed.
I also don't think he needs to be passive while in exile. He could be channeling the Force to help Rey and company.
"Also, you have to ask why the son of the chosen one isn't capable of being the hero anymore. Why do we need Rey?"
I can ask you the same thing. How was the son of the chosen one taken captive in the first place? If he is "weak" enough to get captured, he is "weak" enough to know when to hide himself so that doesn't happen and he can eventually train the next generation.
He is older and probably not as physically capable as he once was. He is unable to take on Snoke and the KOR by himself. I'm guessing he will want Rey to hold back until she is ready in ep8 as well. Besides, his duty was to pass on what he learned to the next generation. He did what he was meant to do in saving his father, now it is up to the new generation to become the heroes.

To the point that he nearly allows the Resistance to be destroyed by the Starkiller Base? To the point where Han Solo, is best friend, is killed? To the point where 2 potential Jedi heroes who are maybe even related to him face off against Kylo Ren alone? If he's holding back to save the resistance at what point does he realise that they need him?!

It's also not about drawing the FO to his friends. Why can't he work independently of them, seeking out Snoke himself and taking him out?
No, instead he's sitting in a hut doing nothing while his friends die and the galaxy comes close to being taken over by the Dark Side again.
Normal cinema goers won't buy that. It will turn people against Luke. It's like the Jedi from the PT. They were cold and so as the public didn't warm to them.
What an anti climax. We've seen Han die, major battles going on, people risking their lives. Then Rey goes and finds Luke in his white robes meditating on Skellig. No thanks.

Because I don't view Luke as a demi-God. He's very powerful but he can be beaten. 7 warriors including Kylo could take him down. I'd buy that. You don't want invincible heroes. It's boring.

In terms of the hero journey story, yes he has to pass on what he has learned and fade into the background. But that needs explaining in the context of the 'real world'. Kenobi and Yoda said they were too old and of course Luke had a better chance than them for a number of reasons. But Luke should still be pretty powerful now. And like I say, by all means wait until the time is right to attack - but we see in TFA that he is missing and a lot of sh** is going down. Yet he is a no show.

Look, yes they might just have ripped off the OT storyline (again) and put Luke into hiding like Yoda and prior to that have him hide the new hope Rey on Jakku (like Luke was). But that is weak for me and a mistake. It turns Luke into the Jedi of the PT which in turn isolates him from the audience. I think the better reason for a Luke no show is that he is in captivity. His powers are diminished. And now the new hero, Rey, must find him, rescue him and learn the ways of the Force so she can save the galaxy.

A question: Have we considered that the chains and the scream could be from Poe, and not Luke?

Exactly. But when you read the threads it is all about "THATS LUKE!!!"

All I am saying is for me why does it need to be Luke? We know that Poe is captured and tortured.
Don't get me wrong, the theory is original and interesting to read.
