Ha. I figured I'd get a response like that. But its true.

Another passion of mine happens to be Disney Theme parks. I spend about as much time on boards for that as I do for SW. And over there, we have proven insiders with access to top ranking executives at Disney. These sources have been proven time and time again to be correct. And they say, Iger is not convinced that the general population will flock to all things things OT (there is a great amount of dissent, but Iger makes the call). That the hybrid model for TFA will be a test of audience reactions to OT and ST material. And that merchandising, theme parks, and future film plans will be kept flexible until they see how TFA is received.

In the insular world of SW fandom, I think we may lose sight of the fact that outside of fans and those who happen to have been kids during the OT era, people may not be as attached to some of these things as we think. Many of these people have never watched an OT film, or maybe they half watched it on TV at a family Christmas party or something to that effect. They know SW not directly, but from its cultural impact. So, they know the falcon, and Yoda. They know family guy and robot chicken. They know who Luke Skywalker is, but they may not have the attachment to him that fans of the movie do.

I'm not saying its true. But it is an unknown. We don't know what aspects of the ST will appeal to 15 year olds, 65 year olds, or people who never had an intense love of SW. These are the majority and the people that Disney needs to win over to have the type of monumental success needed to justify the 4 billion they shelled out for Lucasfilm. They are the unknown quantity and will be the focus of the marketing campaigns and appeals to general audiences.

It will be interesting to watch audience demographics and disney's moves with merchandising post release of TFA as it will be very telling as towards their attitude going forward.

Quick comment people demanding Jason release his info are getting a little ridiculous.

Jason has basically all but said he has call sheets, and if he actually admitted he did do you realize how much of a legal shitstorm he'd be in? He's treading a very fine line of legality here and has to protect not just himself but also his sources. He isn't being cagey to drive up clicks for his site, he is being cagey to protect his site.

Yes Jason is arrogant, yes he gets into petty arguments, yes he has made mistakes in the past. But don't let that lead to you unfairly attacking Jason. I'm glad he isn't sharing what he has because otherwise Disney's team of super lawyers would be on him and we lose someone who has been one of the top rumor sources for VII.

Address his theories and leaks not the person himself. I disagree with some of the stuff he posts, well more than some, but I don't have to attack him to do it.

For a company that isn't sure about the OT, they sure are making EVERYTHING look like the OT. I think you have it backwards. They want to evoke the imagery of the films that are universally beloved to make it easier to accept a new cast. Putting Rey in the Falcon or Poe in an X-wing makes us feel comfortable and familiar. Putting them in totally different ships feels foreign and unfamiliar. Heck, even the planet settings seem to be either a desert, snow, or forrest. All very comfortable and familiar.

Again, I'm just reporting what I was told. But there's a difference in matching a proven aesthetic to maximize appeal and using characters or locations as a primary draw.

Without posting intellectual property like production documents or photos, how exactly can he get into trouble by repeating the "story" he read? He wants credibility in his rumors but doesn't back them up with context. Most of his own rumors he's debunked himself. I think that's where we as fans feel he's talking out of both sides of his mouth.

The dump about Luke doesn't surprise me one bit. I've been talking about the lack of info on Luke in TFA hinting at something odd going on so I can see how he barely appears in the film. However, Mark Hamill was actually on location for the Skellig Michael shooting. If he is only in a shot like the "throne room" concept art that scene was probably actually done at Pinewood because no such setting physically exists at Skellig. That would lead to me to believe Luke has other scenes where he moves about the Skellig setting. Perhaps he plays a Yoda like role to Rey where she visits him in the middle of the film asking for his help and he offers her guidance then sends her on her way and she returns back to him at the end of the film.

One thing that doesn't add up to me is Han's death is said to be on the ramparts of the evil castle setting which in the concept art looks like the castle would be created to exist at the Skellig location. If the bit about Han and Luke prove to be true the castle must appear somewhere else. Perhaps in the snow planet setting that has been mentioned? I'm not sure but that kind of seems off as both Luke being at the Skellig location and the evil castle also being at that location.

Without going through the entirety of this thread or elsewhere on the forum, has anyone come up with a good theory or know of any other spoiler that indicates why the lightsaber is so important? I find it baffling to be honest since lightsabers in previous films haven't held that level of importance; they're just weapons.

According to MSW, it's the opening scene, the closing scene, and pretty much integral to everything in between. Why would the Rebels care, or the Empire care for that matter?

I've read people discussing the key-to-unlock-sith-temple theory being thrown around but not sure how much weight there is to that, sounds like EU material.

This might sound stupid but could it be possible that this castle, the inside scenes were done in pinewood but they are some scenes connected. What am trying to say that maybe Skellig shooting might actually be involved in two different scenes which are not related? One scene in the middle of the film and one shot at the end?

Clutching at straws I know but am just trying to makes sense of things.

I've been bringing this up over and over again and complaining about this idea of a lightsaber crystal opening a tomb or having weapon plans in it. I don't like either idea personally. Luke has to be brought up through out the movie to explain where he is and why he is there. I would like to see this info elaborated on rather than just knowing physical scenes in the movie and being confused.

If Luke is on a "new" planet and it looks like Skellig but the evil castle is also another planet but they both have surroundings like Skellig that would be kind of dumb to me. SW planets especially ones within the same film are very climate opposite of each other. Something is still off. I think the Evil castle is a snowy setting like The Kylo shot in the teaser. Better suited for dark and ominous.

I always thought more Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker is a good thing for eveything Star Wars written on it.
By the way comparing him to the PT Yoda who was flipping all over the place is unfair.
I see him as the new Ben Kenobi with a fair amount of screen time, like Alec Guinness had in Ep.IV. (without dying at the end)
But I doubt this will happen, his involvement will be much shorter as we fans would like to see. (I have nothing against it if JJ and KK would please the OT fans)
Luke should be the most interesting figure in Ep.VII.

Okay, now that I have managed to stop laughing like a hyena at Bob Iger, let me try to formulate a response that consist of something other than LOL repeated over and over again.
Like you touched on in your response, Star Wars is inherently ingrained within the American culture. And becoming ever more increasingly ingrained within the World Culture. And by and large the version that is happens to be the OT. The Force practically functions as a secondary religion in our society. Even if people haven't seen the movies, they have a pretty decent grasp on the story and the characters. Sure, Star Wars has it's haters. What franchise doesn't. And yes, I'm well aware that Prequel Fan out there prefers what he saw on the big screen. But to think that the OT is some forgotten relic of pop culture is.. ridiculous. And the idea that the general public wants nothing to do with it is.. ludicrous.
It's like what @techsteveo pointed out: They have to slap Oscar in an X-wing. John's wearing Stormtrooper armor. Daisy's home and even her outfit is an amalgamation of OT relics. And while things like the X-wing and the TIE fighter have gotten slight updates, they are practically unchanged after 35 years of time elapsing between trilogies.
I understand that in business its who you know not what you know, and I think Bob's 'trepidations' are a prime example of that. I mean, why did you buy Star Wars if your worried it won't sell? Are you telling me Bob bought this for the Prequels!? Then why is the first thing you put out after buying it a TV show set during the OT era!? If this is the attitude regarding the OT in the ivory towers of the magic kingdom, then I for one am glad that this has not trickled down to the production of this movie.

Luke will be a more serious character in TFA, the funny friendly guy of TNH is long gone he has matured now.

He may have to be a serious guy in VIII from the looks of it. While I think he has more than one scene in TFA I actually really like the idea of Luke being a very deep in the background character in TFA. We have all been talking about how it seems as though there are so many characters and how that might negatively effect the film. The OT was great because of it's solid story and the simplicity of it. TFA may be mainly Rey, Finn, Poe and Kylo Ren with Han, Leia and chewie supporting the new protagonist trio in TFA. Han's supporting role will be replaced with Luke in VIII. I like it.

I think you are taking what I'm saying to unnecessary extremes. The idea isn't that SW won't sell or that people don't know SW at all. The question is what is the biggest draw. What creates the most profitable scenario for the franchise. Is the SW universe the draw? Are Jedis the draw. Is it the characters or the droids? Its not a question of whether SW will fail. Its a question of maximizing potential. They don't want SW to be a success, they want it to be an historic success. To do that requires a balance of nostalgia and new blood so that it doesn't feel dated to crowds who aren't in love with SW. These people know of SW, but that is not enough to get them out to the theater multiple times. Or enough for kids to buy the toys or watch the cartoons.

So the idea isn't that Iger thinks the OT won't draw at all. But will it draw 4 billion worth. Or will they need to market around the new blood to maximize profits.

The biggest gut kick for me from this rumor is that

Han Solo dies and he actually never gets to meet his buddy Luke in the new movie.

    This is just wrong.

    The ultimate questions are:

    1) Why would Mark Hamill be all around in interviews giving hints about TFA and saying how cool is going to be and how are THEY passing the torch to the new generation if he´s just a cameo in it?

    2) This is not going to be a messy script. They took a lot of care with the writing of this, with top quality writers (Arnt, Kasdam and JJ). Why would they leave such a strange impact in the script? If the plot of the movie is about looking for Luke, why is he not appearing until the very last shot? That would be a messy script and these guys know their business better than anyone.

    3) How would Rey know where Luke is and how do they know each other? How does the movie justify this if they don´t show any connections until the last scene?

This is like Indiana Jones looking for the Holy Grail and showing the Old Knight at the very end of the film, in the last shot, not having a conclusion, not showing what happens with the grail, not fulfilling the circle neither the arc of the story. It´s just basic story writing.

And thus the "What you know" problem with Mr. Iger rears its ugly head. He's focused so much on the big bang that he'll kill the goose that layed the golden egg. Star Wars already is a historic success. And butchering it for profits is what happened to the Prequels. He also cant see the forest for the trees. The biggest draw for Star Wars is everything. It's just a fun universe to play in. Immersion within the whole universe is what this theme park should be about. IMHO it should look something like this:

I have no friggin way this time to connect this to the topic but I had to say this.

You have a point. Main character in Star Wars - a pacifist? What he´s gonna do? Planning evacuations, or a negotiator, perhaps? How a pacifist, who doesn´t even know how to fire a blaster could possibly become a jedi (or padawan) and fight with a light saber and this kind of stuff? Again.....a PACIFIST in Star WARS? :)
