I am kind of tired of everyone being related...but seeing Luke so sad in TFA just breaks my heart, so I won't mind if he gets a little happiness. Feeling blue? Voila--have a daughter!!

 

The Skywalkers are the central characters in the SW series and I honestly do not care as much about anyone outside their family tree either, to be honest. I for one want to see what happens with the Skywalkers, along with millions of others I'm sure, and we only have 2 more movies to see this play out. I liked Han Solo. I liked Obi Wan. I liked Yoda. I liked Tarkin. I liked Wedge Antilles. I liked Palpatine, etc., etc. But I place the Skywalkers above all else; always have, always will. I do not, however, hold any real, weird emotional attachment to any of them like some people apparently do. I agree, if Rey is not a Skywalker, reincarnated or otherwise, I'll care less about her. Simple as that. If that is the case, hopefully we will see the story shift more to Kylo Ren, Leia and Luke. I for one am perfectly content with watching Luke's story continue and take center stage over an interloper, but I understand the story has to go where it goes, and since I didn't volunteer to write the script for Lucasfilm, I guess I have no voice in the overall matter.

 

Ha ha! We all have weird emotional attachments...to Star Wars. That's why we're here. Let's not kid ourselves.

 

Eh, when I decided to give my son the middle name of "Anakin", my in-laws became very uncomfortable. I still don't understand why...

 

I just think that the story of TFA could have taken place maybe a bit less than 30 years before so we could see what turned everyone into who they are by the time that TFA rolled around since kylo's turn, the massacre, etc. happened much closer to TFA than we initially thought...and then TFA could have shown Kylo and all doing what they did in the movie that ended up being released.

lol though to be fair, obi-Wan has a direct relation to The Skywalkers as well as a seemingly impacted name on Kylo (Ben).

 

Kathleen Kennedy said that if you're not a Skywalker, you do not matter in the episodic movies. She said the Anthology/"A Star Wars Story" movies are for non-Skywalker stories. That's why "random" Jyn Erso is a getting a story about her random family in it. Rumors about the young Han Solo movie include Han's family in it.

And since I don't believe Kennedy doesn't want Rey to matter, she has to be a Skywalker like Ben. The George Lucas treatment for the sequel trilogy included multiple grandchildren of Darth Vader. They're just doling out the reveals as slowly as possible. Kennedy would be taking the position that men's stories are superior to women under the non-Rey Skywalker scenario. In reality they keep saying that Rey is the main/central character. It can't be both ways, that's a contradition, it's cognitive dissonance.

Great characters have great backstories shown or told to the audience. I have little doubt that Jyn is going to be a better character than Rey in VII because there's no stupid mystery box damaging the character for Rogue One within the context of the movie.

 

Small nitpick here is "you do not matter."
Here is Kennedy's quote:

as long as Luke is in the ST, it's about the Skywalker family.

as long as Leia is in the ST, it's about the Skywalker family.

as long as Kylo Ren is in the ST, it's about the Skywalker family.

as long as Vader's crusty melted helmet is in the ST, it's about the Skywalker family.

Kennedy has never said the protagonist of the film needs to be a Skywalker.

 

Yup she just meant the story is of The Skywalkers.

 

Kennedy said many times that the focus of the episodic films is the Skywalkers and that non-Skywalker stories are the spin-off films.

Kennedy (and Abrams) also said Rey is the focus. The Episode VIII press release and video focused on Rey foremost.

Therefore she has to be a Skywalker or this is a contradiction.

The Skywalkers have always been the protagonists of every saga film thus far, why would that change? Nobody ever said, to my knowledge, that a Skywalker needs to be the center of the story, they just are. KK doesn't need to spell out every last detail, but I think it's pretty clear that the PT, OT and now the ST have been/should be about the Skywalker family. As far as I'm concerned, it's been made clear that the Skywalkers > the rest. If Rey is not family, then I'd rather see more KR, Luke, Leia, Luke's pet gecko, KR's collection of Sith teeth, etc., etc.

 

Hmm, no, pretty sure a feature on KR's collection of Sith teeth would not rate a film, just an article in Entertainment Weekly.
