    - Han did push Boba into the pit. Yep it's played as a funny scene but he did get his revenge.
    - Qui Gonn didn't survive.
    - Obi Wan wasn't whipped into a coma.
    - Yoda lost because they had to join to the OT. Are you even trying? Same for Mace.
    - Han never got whipped into a coma. Neither did Leia. Neither did Lando.

No he didn't - you need to watch the movies again.

Maul survived being cut in half, Mace and Qui-Gon can't survive their injuries and come back for revenge - but all heroes must do that right?

Yoda still lost and didn't get his win back. Neither did Obi-wan (he lost TWICE!!!)

Han never got whipped into a coma........ Leia got tortured by Vader and forced to watch her home destroyed. Lando's home was taken away and neither of them got their "wins back" ........... seriously have you seen the movies?

What about R2? Vader blew the top of his head off - R2 doesn't get his win back ever.

You are saying 'whipped into a coma' as if he was beaten by Salacious B. Crumb. He was beaten by a powerful, trained Force user while defending unconscious friend.

It's not that I don't want him to or that he should.

It's because it looks like TPTB aren't going in that direction. At all.

    - He didn't have to run when she was about to attack him. A trained soldier would've stood his ground. Low profile? He would've told her he was with the Resistance, just like he did.

    - The point is, a trained soldier shouldn't freak out in battle. The scene where he got knocked out was played for laughs.

    - No thoughts of himself....haha. That was a cringeworthy moment. No soldier would expose himself like that.

    - Yeah he certainly showed he was a pussy. Meanwhile the scavenger girl who has never been in battle before powers through everything.

His moments were mostly played for cheap laughs instead of giving us more serious moments like at Kanata castle. Is they just wanted to make him a bumbling goof, they shouldn't have given him a child soldier back story.

So he should have beat up a woman?

when does Finn "freak out" in battle?

what kind of soldier would run into a battle with a weapon he has no idea how to use? You're kind of selective about that stuff

when does Finn show he is a pussy?

Yeah...a powerful, trained Force user who loses to an untrained Force user. The fight itself makes no sense- Kylo would've just tossed him into the trees. They just needed to build up suspense and delay Rey's big moment so they used him as a tool for that. Smh.

seriously? scavenger girl that has never been in battle?

she's been in a battle her entire life.

Kylo Ren didn't lose to Rey.. he didn't even want to fight her. He was fascinated by her.. had orders from Snoke to bring her to him... was injured.. messed up in the head from killing his father. the list is endless. we can't judge Rey or Finn based on the fight with Kylo.. the dude was utterly messed up.

This is all peeing in the dark.. but i suspect we haven't seen 10% of what Kylo is capable of when he is truly trying to kill someone.

    i know it's nearly laughable.

the kid was programmed from birth to stand in line and follow orders without question. he didn't even have a name... and yet he broke that. he risked everything to break what he was programmed to be

    pussy? he is the opposite.

i do think that some of his comedic moments were 'too much' for TFA. but the guy was a hero the second he decided to stop being a storm trooper.

Or they wanted him to show he was willing to stand his ground and fight an impossible foe. Its part of his hero journey. He went from "we have to run" to "come and take it."

I'd say watch Wonder Woman film, for good use of a capable male soldier, fighting alongside a "super heroine."

And while he did have laughs, the male never loss his agency or showed incompetence.

Good film that works by balancing the female lead with her male co-lead.

Too bad TFA has come and gone.

    1. He was on the run from the FO. He knew and they knew they were after Poe's BB unit. (lulz). His instinct was to evade capture. If you just traversed a desert, a wanted man for high treason....would you stick around?

    2. What was played for laughs exactly?

    3. He was a brainwashed child soldier. He wasn't supposed to have free will.

    4. How? When? When he went into battle with an unfamiliar weapon? Total puss move. When he went head to head vs Kylo Ren knowing he'd probably lose? Pusssay. When he survived a TIE crash and crossed a desert? Only the pussies do that. When he stood up to Leia and Han to put forth the rescue mission for Rey? pee you double esss why.

The heroic journey isn't compelling if he doesn't get a big moment of his own though. People started respecting Captain America and treated him like a hero only after he started getting wins. Until then he was just this good, brave guy.

Like Rey's big moment of defeating Kylo or Poe's big moment of leading the attack to destroy SKB.

Yep he stood up to big bad Kylo...a few moments later that's overshadowed by Rey defeating Kylo.

Majority of discussion is about Rey, Luke, Kylo. Think about that. There's barely anything to discuss about Finn.

I mean, the first non-white lead in SW...and his only skill is being good with a blaster. You need something unique to sell a character. If skills weren't important they wouldn't have given Rey everything. They wanted to make a statement... She's a strong female character. Look at what she can do.

If Finn and Rey were reversed the backlash would scorch the media.

Skills matter. Period. It just looks worse since he's the first non-white lead in the series...and he's in the B Plot.

Can we just call him a troll now? FFS. Page 138 of the Finn thread.
    Poe's is meager.
    Kylo's is as well.

It's probably the biggest TLJ thread based on an individual character. And Kylo, Rey and Luke are brought up in here are by the "Why Finn is bad" crowd 90% of the time.

    Finn - 138
    Rey - 60
    BDT - 25
    Rian - 27
    Leia - 26
    Poe - 6
    Luke - 29
    Dern - 8
    Kylo 114

    TLJ Threads longer than Finn's:

    Luke/Rey parentage thread
    Genral TLJ rumor thread.

I don't think the Finn character was written or marketed well at all. I just didn't hate Boyega's individual performance like I hate Finn's journey thus far. I can, however, agree with you that the definition of what is "great" is at issue (well not just that, it's the definition and the context in which they're applied).

What I hear often (particularly when it comes to Finn) is that not having this attribute, or that skill doesn't disqualify him from greatness. What I rarely hear is what attribute and what skill, actually makes Finn great. There are rarely any attributes talked about in the affirmative that aren't either equally shared by numerous other characters (in this case courage) or have to do with how he served the plot line as opposed to how his decisions matter for Finn's development.

If your measure of greatness is being the catalysts for others actions around you, you probably love Finn. He does it all movie. Conversely I expect those same people will hate him next movie, as he is no longer positioned to play Galactic bus driver to everyone else.

I also think I will look on in interest how Finn will be received by those who so strongly advocate that he needs no skill or competent combat in coming movies. Because we all already know he is going to exhibiting the former and be involved in the latter the next movie. If their favorite character was the lovable, goofy, in over his head Finn, I suspect they're going to hate the Finn that shows up in TLJ. If I don't hear a chorus of "why did they change Finn" and "why does he fight so much now" it'll just further confirm why I lightly regarded their claims that "Finn was great the way he was".

Also, I think the Hobbit analogies don't work well because even though Frodo, Samwise, Merry, and Pip aren't the renowned swordsmen or wizards, by and large all the characters and all the combatants (men, elves, dwarves, hobbits) from the Lord of the Rings still face the fight the same adversaries. There is an equal footing in that universe that is not replicated in SW. When a Force Battle begins in the GFFA, non-Force Users know to clear out the way.

Not sure if I've seen anyone on here argue that merely having skills will make Finn great; I'd characterize this as a strawman until I saw some evidence otherwise. We have definitely argued that based on how his character is described in the canon TFA novelization, the genre of the movie, the established profile of characters with his screen time and marketing, he should have and exhibit skills sets. The rest of the argument seems to be something being projected by commenters but not actually being said. That said, even R1 support characters (a movie devoid of Force Users) exhibit skills, I don't see why suddenly now there should be a different set of expectations with Finn. And again, I'm also not sure what is going to happen with all the posters expending energy extolling the virtues of a melee combat ineffective Finn, when the next Finn is reportedly going to be the exact opposite. How will they square their positions then? Who knows, I guess we'll wait and see.

The best thing that could happen to the SW Fandom
after Mark “Twitter Troll” Hamill is John Boyega the Star Wars Geek.
If the writers don´t use his charismatic for Finn´s Arc,
they are really the biggest morons.

You haven't seen the entire Hero Journey Story yet!

I believe the Finn thread is the longest so.......... ya

Lando wasn't a lead character? If you choose to view characters like Dungeons and Dragons character sheets, then you're going to be disapointed in characters that are good, deep, compelling characters.

Many of Finn's positives have been brought up in the 130+ pages of the thread. You just dismissed many of them. The fact that you some how believe that if Finn wins a fight it will be somehow out of place suggests that you have ignored the skills and positives that have been brought up. And that you subscribed to a ridiculously exaggerated view of Finn's deficiencies.
