The one part I still cringe at is when Han is trying to point at where Rey is on the SKB, and Finn starts mimicking him and asking why he's doing that. I did not find it amusing. It felt like a poor attempt at humor. Anyone could tell he was pointedly telling him to look. It made Finn come across a bit dumb.

I think that there will be comedy associated with character, or otherwise we'd get a festival of humourless douches like in Episode I, but I believe it will be toned down.

There was too much of that kind of stuff with Finn in TFA unfortunately.

He had some good moments, like his words to Rey when he confessed who he was, and his bravery in his duel with Ren. John is a great actor, and I would like to see more moments like those, along with the humor that makes him so likable.

Wow, I was thinking the same thing, everytime I watch TFA... that scene... A child would know that Han was trying to get his attention and Finn ask Han why is he doing that which makes him really seem dumb. I mean what kind of training did Finn get in the FO. In combat there are numerous ways to communicate with your fellow soldiers with out speaking... anyway I don't want to seem like I don't like Finn, I do, I just want him to portray a great character. For example, I think SJ went too far with his serious tone and JB is going too far with the comedy. BDW should give lesson on being cool... LOL I'm going too far... I hope that RJ can change the direction JJ/JB were going and turn Finn into a classic SW character that everyone really admires.

I'm pretty sure his Pacific Rim character will be totally different from Finn, since he has producer and creative control.

Yeah I think that's the problem. Finn has a lot of potential to be another beloved character in SW, the next Han even, but he needs to be taken seriously by the people working with his character too. RJ seems to be deeply committed to each character in TLJ, and even though marketing is showing the humor only, I think we'll see a deeper side to Finn in the movie. I love his humor, but there's more to him and I'd like to see a bit of everything.

Finn going on a spy mission in 8... thats surely an upgrade... maybe in 9 he'll become a Jedi... or just a hero for the Resistance... 111 days.

Or a top-tier strategist. Finn is a smart guy. He's a fast learner, he's creative, he can make up plans under duress. Just wanted to point it out.

The thing that really stings about that Phasma line, is that you can tell they did multiple takes of that scene and JJ chose the goofiest one.

Before TFA came out, the talking Finn toy from Force Friday had a calmer and more collected version of Finn say "The name's Finn and I'm in charge now."

    Instead the movie went with:
"I'M IN CHARGE NOW!! I'M IN CHARGE!!!"

Han Solo: "Bring it down a notch."

Finn was just fine. if they make him more serious I will be annoyed that they changed his personality.

According to John in one of his recent interviews, he was originally going to play Finn as a serious character. It was Abrams that toned down the seriousness not him. As a matter of fact Rian Johnson has said that he intends to have Finn "find his strength" and to make sure "he's better drawn" as a character in TLJ. He also said he John shared a vision for Finn.

You know I resisted the dislikes while you threw shade at Finn. But thank you.

Keep Finn funny. Go watch Blade if you need a dour killer to be happy.

It could be why the tone down Finn's part is due to because if he came off to strong in TFA, and Rey being strong with the Force and powerful, have two character that came off too strong maybe a lot of fans would not like it. So I can see why his part was tone down because to show him grow more and better in each new movie with his part getting more serious. Rey being the main character being who she is a lot are saying how she so strong in the force so quick and no training and no back story. So image Finn very serious making him also a strong character with no back story, why he broke away from the force order, why did he help Poe, why he knows how to use a light saber, is he force senstive or not, if he was more strong in TFA this would be too much for the fans. So now we can see him develop.

Rey and Finn just need have some force babies and Kylo Ren as Ben Solo be their Jedi master.

You can see it different. Finn's Character Arc doesn't make any sense with his behaviour.
Somebody who was ripped apart from his family, had 0 childhood, trained just to kill,
can't be a comic relief. He was there few hours ago when the FO slaughtered the villagers. He can have funny moments, why not, but the writer's didn't know what to do with him,it's just bad writing.

Btw Boyega vs. Johnson goes on:

So far out of all the trilogy directors, Rian is my favorite.

It's funny that you say that because in that interview I was talking about that John gave, he strongly implied what you said. That it made more sense to him for Finn to be a more serious character given his background.
Now, how Abrams came away with the idea that a character from that background should provide most of the comedy I hardly get. The only reason I can think of is that he, like a large portion of the fandom, viewed the stormtroopers as walking punchlines because they've been used as little more than canon fodder for so long.
With that being said I'm glad John and Rian are making a conscious effort to improve Finn in a way that the fandom, especially his fans, can appreciate and be proud of. For the record, I don't have a problem with Finn providing a little comedy. Especially if it's situational like "I'm not the one hitting you with a stick". (I'm talking about just the line here) Where it's snarky. But the whole skittish and jumpy "I'm in charge now, Phasma" business and the constantly being knocked down so the audience can laugh at him definitely needs to go. Save that for Chewie or the droids.
    That's my opinion.

The comedy was a bit forced in many places, but sadly it fell mostly on Finn. I still hate one of the openings scenes where Poe is face to face with Kylo and he's like, paraphrasing, "do you talk first or do I talk first". After that, I took Kylo less seriously even before he took off the helmet.

I like that Finn was fun, but it went too much on the comedic relief side. Like it would not of been as bad if he didn't get his ass beat so much, and drinking out of the water well, and the Rathtars...

Oscar added that I think, and it's a good way of showing the difference between Ren and Vader. As Kylo is intentionally meant to not be another Vader.
