Those scenes of Finn inthe last jedi shows the writer did not know where to go or do with him. Because he is not the main charcter. Phasma scenes with Finn we learn nothing new about Phasma or Finn why because they are not the main charcters.

It has nothing to do with the writer not seeing Finn as the lead. It's about telling a fulfilling story. All the characters in the story have to be given purpose and conviction. They cannot be dictated to you by another character. Especially when Finn is a lead, and Rose is support. Why was Finn supporting Rose and the Resistance when both are supporting characters to him? Kylo and Rey are the ones with the generic story line, so what's so interesting about them? Finn's character is the unique one. You can go anywhere with Finn, but you can't do the same for Kylo and Rey. Unless Finn's background or story is taken into account, Episode IX will probably be a generic story.

Finn is like a flesh and bones R2-D2 at this point. It's really telling that the "Ordinary Finn" crew blows up everything he does in an attempt to shut people up. Literally nothing listed is even remotely 'special' and if we taken into account how the "battle" with Phasma went, we find ourselves thoroughly steeped in 'bare minimum' territory.
The more people praise LucasFilm for doing the bare minimum, the less they'll potentially be moved to make changes that satisfy Finn's fans. Although to be honest, I don't expect anyone there to do anything regardless. With the exception of maybe JJ Abrams, I can't think of anyone that has expressed any care for any of the characters besides Rey and Kylo.

The "Ordinary" Finn crowd like him ordinary... until you say that's what he is, then the ordinary things he does have to be viewed as special.

I hate "Score Board" analysis, but it is a "thing" and it writes its own history. Minnesota defeated the Saints on a last second desperation heave in the NFC this year. Saints should have won, were arguably better, but the score board writes its own history. The Vikings "won".

Finn "defeated" Phasma because she thought he was already dead after defeating him in melee combat and he hit her when she was no longer defending herself. But the score board writes its own history. Finn "won".

I honestly don't see there being much of a push to make Finn actually special, we have to keep in mind, Rian might have written this in a vacuum, but it didn't get to the finish line without a bunch of people co-signing it (including in some capacity JJ). I think the trend thus far (not just for Finn but for Rey also and Poe to some extent) is that whatever it is you aspire to for them, you'll get less than that (I had hopes for Rey that didn't come to fruition and likely won't and she'll forever be less than what she could have been, but still her force usage and centrality to the story is some consolation).

So I'll go in with low expectations for Finn and I doubt I'll be disappointed. He'll be what the "Ordinary" Finn crowd wanted. And years from now when people talk about the "best quotes", the "best fights", the "best scenes" Finn won't be in any of them, just as he is increasingly not in the topic of discussion now when we talking about going forward.

Unless I see some good really convincing footage of him in the trailer, I won’t see episode 9. Especially after hearing those potential leaks

None of that was addressed on film properly, the deleted part of the phasma fight was better for him, But it was cut, even though it still sucked, him fighting on Craig was worthless thanks to the sacrifice cop out, part of the new rebellion like 20 million other characters who had no screen time, him helping blow up SKB wasn’t even mentioned in the last jedi. Everything finn did is an illusion, since none of it was given proper leverage

ALL of those "leaks" are fake.

And even though you don't like it. The reason Rose was fangirling over Finn at the start of TLJ was because of what he did on Starkiller base.

Well, his goal was to never blow up the base, but to get Rey and that's it. The fact that his actions helped him get to Rey and thus help blow up the base are a coincidence. It is addressed, by Rose. It's why she gushes over him at the beginning.

They never had nothing big planned for Finn he was only the Red Herring of 7 and they followed up with that in 8 giving him no important role of the main plot.

Finn is a token character he just there for diversity. Look how lame they made his plot in TLJ, they gave him Rose Tico so Rey can spend time with Kylo Ren lol. Look how lame that was, then in the whole movie Rey does not share ONE LINE with Finn in TLJ just a weak scene hugging. They have no real development for him he just there for diversity. Poe had a better development than Finn, Poe was suppose to die in 7 but they gave him more development and role in 8 and down played Finn. In the original script of 7 Poe was to die, but he had better role in 8 than Finn how? Because Finn is a token character there for diversity.

You do understand that Finn was on a mission to save the Resistance, right? There was a reason they were split up.

and the written plot he does not succeed, and it does not drive any thing in the main plot of the movie. So you understand what was written for Finn to do did not move the plot of the movie?

I get it, but while I don't like the sequence either if they had succeeded, I dunno it felt human to me. However, listening to the audio commentary, Rose and DJ were to to be Finn's angel and devil approach to looking at the world.

That has nothing to do with driving the plot of the movie. Finn did not impact the plot of the movie, his meeting Rose or DJ did not add or change anything from the plot of the movie related to Finn. The lead roles have an affect on the plot of the movie and Finn did not because he is a diversity character and that is it.

I do like this part of the movie: Rey's secret message for Finn by the words of Chewie.

I'm not saying I don't disagree with you, but usually in a 2nd act you don't move the plot along that much, but instead focus on character development. I mean, the plot of Empire was more character focused then moving the plot along. The purpose was to develop Finn further as a character, by showing him the world a little bit. How the war is actually being fought. As I said, I still don't like the sequence, but I don't think Canto Bight was all for nothing. In the long run for Finn as a character. I don't think Finn sacrificing himself would have done anything.

Finn was split from Rey so Reylo can happen lol lets be real if Finn was with Rey you think Kylo Ren would be space screwing with her alone while she wet from the water raising our her hands to his hand while Finn in the hut, even if he was in another hut he might be peeking through her door to see what she up to lol. Hear her talking to someone he would went see what going inside, that would be good time show he is force sensitive why Rey was force touching Kylo Rens hand Finn come in and blow the hut up not Luke lol. They had get rid of Finn so Reylo can happen so what they did so the audience did not feel bad for him they gave him Rose. Because is only a diversity character.
    --- Double Post Merged, May 11, 2018, Original Post Date: May 11, 2018 ---
If Finn was able to sacrifice him self to save the Resistance by flying into the canon that he inform the Resistance the capabilities of that Canon. So him flying into it sacrificing his self would done big to the MAIN PLOT LUKE SKYWALKER WOULD NOT NEED TO SACRIFICE HIS SELF TO SAVE THE RESISTANCE!

If Finn ram into the canon in the middle of it this would keep the FO from putting a hole inside their door, so Luke did not have to come and hold FO back until Rey founded them. It would gave Rey enough time to find them and save them. So if Finn died blowing up the canon that he has knowledge about it, so him destroying it after he inform the Resistance what it was would gave him more meaning. This would driven the plot of the movie and Luke would be alive.

I have no idea what your saying. Finn is not Force sensitive... and Rey went to go get Luke. Snoke bridged their minds thats how the Force connection started at least according to Snoke.

Finn is just a sad token character. Watched it on the net and i'm glad I didn't pay for this movie. They should have just killed him off at the end. Pretty much nobody gives a crap about the guy. But I guess he will be back to provide more cheap humour and be a loyal dog to Rey. Pathetic.

I come back to this thread after weeks of ignoring it and it's STILL an absolute mess to read through.

Just because Finn didn't behead Snoke, blow up the Supremacy, or sleep with Rey and father her child in a single movie doesn't mean that he's completely useless as a character. Poe contributed about as much to the story (IE: enact an ill-advised plan that fails horribly and gives everyone something different to learn from it) and nobody calls him the "Token Latino".

TLJ was, by design, going to have to be a story about Luke Skywalker, Kylo Ren, and Rey. Could they have done more with the other characters? Sure, and I've come to realize that my biggest issue with the movie is the "Speed In Space" B-plot, but no matter how they would have developed the story, a good chunk of it was going to keep those three central characters separate from nearly everyone else.

At least Finn got a story where he was able to grow as a character by learning about the stakes of the Galaxy beyond simply fighting for himself and running from the First Order (giving him a good reason to fight for the Resistance aside from "Muh Rey") instead of just sitting in the Raddus with everyone else until they got to Crait. So many people in this thread completely missed the point of the character's story arc and are refusing to get past it.

(Really, though, I hope that we go through Episode IX without hearing a single "lol Finn used to be a janitor" line. It was grating in TLJ.)
Nothing... You've heard from r/StarWarsSpeculation... Is true.

The sub was a spin-off of r/StarWarsLeaks for a reason. There were too many "GUYS I'M AN INSIDER AND I KNOW THE ENTIRE PLOT" posts in the lead-up to TFA that they had to be jettisoned to another board.
