Official Hux Episode VIII Discussion Thread

Great news indeed for Hux.

 

Domhnall Gleeson: “When I read it I needed to talk to him, and I think that’s always a good sign. I was like, ‘Wow there’s some stuff there which is kind of—not scary but different to what I expected,’ and that’s a really, really nice thing. I think that’s a really positive thing, I think that’s important for those films that we don’t repeat ourselves. So I just wanted to talk to him, and when I talked to him he was so clear and so confident, not in a brash way but he knew the film he wanted to make, and it was a really lovely thing. And I got really excited about being in it, and it was a really very, very cool experience working with him. I would love to work with him again, I really enjoyed it.”

“I’m just really interested to see the film now, as well. You never know what something’s gonna be like. Even when you read the script, you don’t know what the tone of something is gonna be. You can guess at it, but I can’t wait to see it. I just wanna sit in a room full of people and watch that movie and see what it does to us.”

I think it’s really cool that he’s doing it, and I’m interested to see how he approaches it because he’s a superb filmmaker. i still don't think Ren and Hux will get into it, but having seen mother! yesterday, i would be interested to see Hux get into a fight with someone.
maybe Gleeson doesn't look like he'd be very formidable because he's so thin and rather tidy in TFA.
but he actually can be rather scary and his height makes him imposing enough.

 

I don't think that Hux is a person that would get into a fist fight with someone. If he wanted to do harm to anyone, he'd do it in a more indirect way, like poisoning that person or killing him or her in sleep. He's a sleazy coward, not a brutal hothead.

 

oh but he's not ~ he's not a coward. yes, he prefers not to get his hands dirty perhaps, but he's definitely not a coward.
and not that Tarkin or Krennic were cowards, but i can't see either of them actually brawling, whereas i think Hux would.

but i also agree he's not a brutal hothead.
i'm thinking of episode IX when it's all crumbling down around him.
he'd go for a blaster first, but if disarmed, i can see him absolutely fighting tooth and nail to the death.

 

Judging solely on what we know so far - I can see Hux having importance to the narrative strong enough to justify his presence in Episode IX - but I can't make the same argument for Captain Phasma.

Once Captain Phasma is defeated by Finn in Episode VIII, what more is left for the character to do or explore? You would either have to make her be the victor of their duel (which - outside of making the Finn thread go ballistic - would likely feel too grim for an already darker middle chapter) or have her play the part of a defector - which, considering what we now know of her personality, would be vastly out-of-character.

General Hux, on the other hand, is still very much needed. He is our voice and window into the First Order navy and military. Whether or not they explore his character more in the last Chapter is up to J.J and potentially the Story Group to decide - but the point is, he has function that cannot be replaced by any other character outside of literally drafting up an expy.

 

au contraire, Rear Admiral, this is very very within Phasma's personality. if the Resistance gets their hands on her, she'd turn on her back in an instant. it's unfortunate, but this is why she dropped the shields in TFA and this is the character Dawson gave us in the Phasma book. she's got loyalty to nobody.

couldn't agree more. i have no doubt he'll make it to IX, though my stance on his taking over as the big bad has waned. i literally see the power struggle to be three-pronged in IX: the New Republic, the FO, and Snoke ~ with the Resistance caught in the middle and maybe even not entirely certain which side they ought to be on.

 

Allow me to rephrase that, then: do you really want to follow a scummy character on the heroes' side for the first half of Episode IX only to inevitably have her do something despicable enough to warrant a karmic death in the narrative? From my point of view, it seems like it would be a waste of screen-time - and I don't think they'd be willing to commit to a full-on redemption story.

There are many ways it could end though. A tie and gets broken up, she dies(which I doubt), she joins the resistance, she quits and runs off...someone else helps Finn like Rey and cuts her arm off. Many things could happen.

 

Hux is not really an interesting character. He is going to be killed. I bet on it.

 

Han Solo was an interesting character and he was still killed. Just saying. But IMO Hux is much more interesting than other supporting characters like Phasma or Poe.

 

i think Abrams did Hux a disservice.
he's actually quite interesting, but unless you've read the script/novel or any of the EU, he can come off as sort of facile.
i think Abrams sacrificed him to focus on other characters. hopefully Johnson can course correct with that.

Wendig gave him a backstory well worth plundering in the Aftermath series, though Dawson did him no particular favors in Phasma.
i'd still really like to get some EU FO material that actually explores this group with more sensitivity/nuance.
they set such a good tone at the beginning, but lately the EU FO has been disappointing. : o p
