    RIP Carrie Fisher.

We all pay our respects to you. In the mean-time, I'm sure Disney is looking for a suitable way for Leia's character to continue in Episode 9.

I really like the idea of her voice being used versus a force ghost. I think it will have more impact depending how it's used in the narrative and how it interacts with Mark/Daisy scenes or even Adam.
I find force ghosts are becoming a bit predictable. I'm sure we will see Yoda as a ghost, for sure , though.

I wonder if this has impacted upon Ren's storyline?
It seemed likely to me that he could be redeemed and that this would involve some kind of reconciliation with Leia.
However, with Carrie passing, this is unlikely (unless heavy CGI is used). Will her on screen demise then result in more angst for Ren and a further turn to the Dark Side?

I also don't find it disrespectful at all to talk about the character of Leia as it is through these stories that Carrie lives on in the hearts and minds of all her adoring fans.

I think it will be a hard task for LFL to tell the story now that they originally planned. Some may complain, but I have some faith they find a solution people will like and which gives Leia all the respect she deserves. :)

It might even produce some much needed originality.

I personally don't think they can kill her off in VIII unless they do it at the very beginning. Another finale with a legend death would be a downer.
However, I don't think they have done that which would likely mean a complete re-write of VIII if they wanted to kill her off, which won't happen.
Therefore, I think it likely that Leia survives this movie and then meets her demise early in IX. Just an ill-educated guess, mind.

But if Ren's redemption begins at the end of VIII, his mothers demise in IX might both give us pause for thought (will it turn him back to evil?) or she may become "more powerful than anyone could possibly imagine" and help guide Ren from the beyond.

yes, maybe, or if any of the rumors about Leia in coma in VIII are true, they could skip the moment in which Leia awakes from the coma to the end of IX, so we would have Leia alive at the end of the ST. Just an idea, but it would need additional scenes for VIII and maybe a big rewrite for IX.

they certainly have an interesting question. They knew where the characters were going in IX and now must face a difficult question. As we know, and we may be very wrong on this, the only Skywalker Descendant currently is Kylo Ren. I agree that Leia was the most likely character to cause him to turn back to the light. If we are going to have more Skywalker descendants either Luke has secret kids or they come through Kylo. They now have a difficult challenge getting there, but I suspect Kennedy, Rian, JJ, and Colin all sitting in a room have spent many hours trying to hash this out already.

They could attempt to write around it, by not have leia die on screen, but become a character we see off screen, or they could use her death as a catalyst for change.

I kind of hope Leia lives as a character myself. I am sure they will find a solution that will work, and you know whatever they do someone is going to get pissed. Rewriting, recasting, CGI or whatever. People are pissed anyway about VII and how it went, you can't please everyone. Let the LF people handle it. Whatever they do, I hope it's best for the story they want to tell, and respectful to the legacy of Leia and of Carrie.

RIP to Carrie and Debbie. I am so sad about this.

There had been speculation that Leia would be killed off as a plot device in 8 or 9... Now that that is a near certainty, it is likely Han Solo will stay dead, unless they have already brought him back in 8.

Thus, Kylo Ren will likely be an orphan. If he killed both of his parents, he is probably irredeemable and will die in the course of the ST, whether at the hands of the good guys, the bad guys, or by his own hand. If he did not actually kill Han, as has been speculated, but was merely making a demonstration to win Snoke's trust, or if his mother's demise spurs him toward a turn to the light side (the opposite of Vader), then he might still be standing at the end of the series.

A big complaint about the EU was "you couldn't kill off the big 3" so we were still getting stories about the big 3 still alive circa 40 ABY.

Well the time has come. Push comes to shove. Will Leia live artificially as a recast or CGI? Or will she get a dignified death?

Let Leia be with Han together in the Force. Give her a honorable death. No CGI!

I'm still thinking neither. I've posted this before, but Leia has always, both literally and figuratively, been a trailblazer. I wouldn't mind a brief CGI scene where she decides to go explore the Unknown Regions and beyond, looking for answers about the Force, or perhaps searching for allies to fight the First Order.

Killing her off just seems in pretty poor taste.

Let Leia pass away in VIII and bring her back as a Force Ghost in IX to confront her son Ben. In my opinion this is the most respectful way to handle the character after Carrie's passing. Unless - of course - all her scenes for IX are already filmed. In that case I really want to see Carrie's last performances as Leia. It's less controversial / more acceptable I guess to use a CGI Force Ghost of Carrie than recreating her digitally as a living person.
