Mark Hamill: “I at one point had to say to Rian, ‘I pretty much fundamentally disagree with every choice you’ve made for this character. Now, having said that, I have gotten it off my chest, and my job now is to take what you’ve created and do my best to realize your vision.’” (May 25, 2017)

Mark Hamill: “That’s the hard part [about playing and being associated with a character for so long]. You don’t want to admit how possessive you’ve become. There are times where you go, ‘Really? That’s what they think of Luke? I’m not only in disagreement – I’m insulted.’ But that’s the process and you thrash it all out.” (October 30, 2017)

He still acted like a professional in the movie.

Can someone please explain why they didn't do this?

Why not give Luke a truly badass moment before he had to go? Why not have him pull out the green lightsaber one last time or show a brief yet extraordinary mastery of the force (there's literally a million ways they could have done this). And then after that the end result could have been EXACTLY the same. He could STILL have sacrificed himself to buy time for the others. Disney would still have their end result of killing Luke off to bring the focus onto the new generation of characters.

Literally just one 20-30 second sequence and NOBODY would have complained about it either. The general audience would have loved it. The die hard fans would have loved it. Nothing to lose. Why?!

He used it in a flashback. :p But seriously where is the green lightsaber? Did he throw it away like Anakin's saber?

I was kidding about the boo hoo...but I am curious about where it is. As for Anakin's saber, oddly enough, remember it was torn apart with Kylo and Rey and then Luke has it at the end? Did Luke put it back together or was it because projecting himself it was just in his mind?

Rey still was in possesion of Anakin's broken saber. So it was just a projection. I think it was also a hint for what's actually going on here. Luke looked younger and had Anakin's saber. So the attentive viewer could already tell that Luke wasn't really there.

i'm confused. did Luke not have the most "badass" moment in the Force ever in this movie?

i was in a red-hot rage when Luke when out to meet Ben and lit up because i thought it was going to devolve into a fan service mess.
but it didn't. the fans got to see Luke wield a saber, but do no harm, which is ultimately not just the Jedi way, but the way for all of us.

he showed Ben his powerlessness without resorting to violence.

    that's true power. that's staggering.

Oh, I know. His hair was cut and all that, so I knew something was up or that the caretakers on the Island had a barbershop. lol

I think it was especially badass because of his line prior in the movie: "Do you really think I will the face the entire FO with my lightsaber?" (Or something like that, I haven't watched this movie in English yet.)
Eventually he IS facing the entire FO by himself.

what's brilliant about that is that it's what the audience expects (or the fans anyway), and Luke puts it down to remind us that it isn't what's important. it's not what the story is about. and then Johnson gives it to us anyway, but subverts it by saying: this is illusion. the real fight is still spiritual, not physical.

Coming from a dude who tried to kill someone during his sleep ?

I saw Mark Hamill in the last jedi, I didn't see Luke Skywalker.

i'm very disturbed by this too. but Luke acknowledges he made a huge mistake, that he failed Ben.
i'm okay to a certain degree with a momentary lapse due to fear.
he wouldn't have followed through and that's what matters.

what continues to upset me is what did this kid do that was ever so bad?
why was everyone so terrified of him? we still need answers before we can make judgments.

And you have Yoda and Luke trying to burn everything they believed in ( and they even be one with the Force with the method ) laughing how they fail and how they allowed darkness to rise in the galaxy.

And yet they failed again because Rey took the books and just burn a tree with lightnings ...

We were so bad young Skywalker and then they go in peace laughing at their failure and how that was just for fun.

2 lessons you gave to young Rey, she already know what she needs :D

Basically, you're so bad at teaching, leave her with the books and kill yourself.

To me, the duel is badass. His death is moving, his arc is one of the few things I save.

I would have liked a less grotesque representation
But overall, the story is moving.

What drives me crazy is I almost killed Ben Solo.

Totally out of character. And unecessary.
A brutal and shameful compromise used as a device for the force-skype-calls etc..

try to invent something else Rian.
As some of you here have done in the last few months.

You see, I saw Luke Skywalker who had a rough time and changed. People don't stay the same. I don't know why people have a problem with that.

Yoda said the most important lesson is failure and Luke failed alot.

    Episode IX

RISE OF THE BROOM BOY :D

Luke Skywalker has vanished. (yet again)
In his absence, the sinister FIRST ORDER ...

Umm where have we seen this? Why did Luke leave a map leading to him when all he wanted was not to be found?

And sneaking into his nephew's room in the night and considering (even for a brief moment) killing him and then running away from everything once the hell breaks loose and refusing to help when asked for it - WTF? What was RJ on when he came with this? I can't believe he couldn't figure out any better explanation (for Luke's seclusion) than this. Not only this whole story is rubbish, but it's heavily against the Luke's character and often really insulting. Mark is right about it. And he still did superb job in this movie anyway. Without him it would be half the movie at best.

They just don't have any idea of where the whole trilogy will go and just come with something as they go along. Because the scriptwriters and director also differ between the episodes and don't even seem to work together much, we get this mess.

That's not what it was about. It was a passing of a torch. Yoda knew you can't build something new from something old. Just like Rian did with this movie.

It was about passing the torch, but it was poorly executed. It looked like a story written from the wrong end with some elements thrown in to make it work somewhat. It quite worked in the context of this single movie, but not so well as part of the whole saga where there's more to be taken into account.
