I — we — love Mark Hamill. I love — I mean, we all love! — his portrayals of Luke Skywalker in the original trilogy, but there was always something, at least to me, that was holding him back from delivering a galaxy-shattering performance.

Just reading this...his attitude towards portraying Luke is so very different now to when he was last portraying him (in a leading role) some 34 years ago in ROTJ.

This is a serious level of commitment, almost like method acting, from a side that I don’t think that we’ve previously seen from Mark in the Star Wars films.

This makes me all the more excited to see his portrayal of Luke in The Last Jedi; I really do think that we’re in for something truly special!

I feel bad for Hamill. Rian Johnson is turning an iconic character into a loser just to prop up the new characters. He didn't need to go that way. Luke could have been down but still trying to fix things. That's more complex than just giving up.

It's a bit early to claim all of that.

This is what a lot of Rian fans like to say, but it's not true at all. We already have Hamill spilling the beans multiple times that Luke starts off TLJ as a cranky old failure. We know that his Jedi were destroyed and that he's exiled himself -- Mark uses those words and so does the advertising.

And that all matches with what we see in the trailers. So it's a bit early why?

Rian fans like to say that this will be a great arc, and I say who cares? We could design a number of good arcs and none of them need to start off by making Luke a total failure. It's poor writing on Rian's part.

I would have to disagree. I think it is difficult to lay judgement on Rian's writing, story, plot, and acting BEFORE the movie is even released and seen. We know little of the overall story, arc, and character transitions from beginning to end for any of them. Trailers are just bits and pieces of the story. They are not necessarily in chronological order nor does dialog voice overs have to match the scene. Anything before seeing the movie is just speculations and assumptions. IMO.

But we're not just talking about the trailer. We're talking about what Mark Hamill says and all the interview/article material. It's no secret that they're starting off Luke as failure-exile Luke. Why Rian fans keep denying this is the real question. As always, the answer is people don't like to admit the truth when they've already decided ahead of time that everything is awesome.

I'll say it again -- it does not matter to me if Luke has a good arc. They've already proven themselves to be lazy, dull thinkers by starting Luke off in the position he's in. It's not even dramatic; it's just dumb.

I'm really not seeing Luke being a failure, I'm seeing that he couldn't save or help Kyle/Ben. There's a difference between doing everything right and it not going correctly that failing*. Failing implies that Luke messed up in some form.
Now, keep in mind that when Hamill talks, he's speaking from the perspective of getting inside the emotions of the character. He made up an elaborate backstory, that to me, and I'm many others, are glad that it's not true. Simply the gist of what he's saying is correct. To Hamill, Luke "feels" that he failed Kylo Ren. That doesn't mean he has, and that to me is very consistent with the character of Luke Skywalker. If he has failed or messed up, he's going to find a way to fix it.
The point is that he didn't mess up, and we're going to see how he's going to wrestle with that.

*"If Luke couldn't save him, how could I?" -Han Solo
"Kylo failed you, I won't." -Rey
Note, neither one of those imply that Luke failed, because the responsible party is Kylo.

How is defiance of audience's expectations considered as "lazy writing?" Making him an ultimate Force Dude-Bro without any restraints would be lazy, unimaginative and creatively arid. Rian is writing a film, not a fanfic. Also, someone didn't listen to enough Hannah Montana when it was airing, because otherwise he would have remembered this masterpiece. :p

At this point I think I have heard every possible outcome for every main character described as lazy writing by someone.

I think calling something lazy writing is lazy writing.

    Oh, wait...
