Rey is an orphan left in Jakku when she was 5 years old, something like that

Here's a wrinkle in that whole thing: Hidalgo's Visual Dictionary says that Rey made the flight suit doll at age 10. Rey's Survival Guide says that the helmet of Dosmit Raeh is one of the first thing she's salvaged in the ship graveyard, and that she named the doll after Dosmit Raeh.

I just find it hard to believe that the kid Rey is supposed to be 10 years old if that's what they've now settled on behind the scenes.

 

The actress is about 8 years old I believe. Based on the flashback, it would be safe to say she's between 5-8 years old. I wouldn't say 10. She looks younger than that. I believe they reworked the timeline to accommodate a story change. Just a hunch considering the flashback scene call sheets never had a "young Rey screaming" in the scene descriptions.

She could have been abandoned at 8 years old and made the doll at 10 years old. Maybe she didn't start salvaging until age 10. I doubt she would have gone from abandoned kid to scavenger at the same time. Maybe she was a servant to Unkar Plutt before going off on her own.

Well that and that they filmed the young Rey desert scene in California, on some rooftop studio, instead of in the backlot of Pinewood Studios or Abu Dhabi, and they cast an American little girl to play Rey. That comes across as not part of the original planning in addition to being absent from the MSW and MillenniumFalcon.com scene lists.

 

Yes I see that wasn't your statement. My comment was more for the thread. Your quote above seems to indicate that JJ confirmed her being dropped at 5 years old. That isn't entirely accurate and the age could have changed in the final film thanks to the late changes asked for by Rian Johnson.

This makes me believe the MSW crew that the rumors of Rian Johnson directing a scene for TFA are true. Maybe it was little Rey?

 

The actress said it was Abrams.

I think it's possible a shot Johnson directed from September 2015 in Ireland could have been used for the ending. I don't know that though.

 

Does anyone have a link to Abrams/Daisy stating her age? Anyway, seems likely she was five, but just because the actress and/or director made a statement doesn't mean it's canon.

They may have cast an 8 year old simply because she'd be easier to work with than a 5 year old.

Perhaps. An actress who could conceivably pass for 5 is good enough. Also, Daisy is 23 herself, but Rey is meant to be 19/20. It's not that uncommon.

 

Yep that is what I thought an added scene. Johnson and JJ were said to be working together, if this is an added scene would it not have been automatically Johnson who conducted it? Perhaps Abrams added the scene on Johnson's request? The scene does not look like something original in regards to the breakdowns. Its not there, so it must be something supplementary and done for a reason?

Yep he is and yet posters think he's full of crap adding funny icons every time he backs up his justified opinions with evidence

 

EW said there were secret reshoots in California done for TFA last summer, so maybe that's when they did this scene.

I don't think it's impossible that Rian had a big hand in that scene being added in - even if JJ was the one who directed it it's possible Rian was on hand and/or came up with the scene.

 

Also, Jacob Tremblay played a 5 year old in Room when was he age 7/8.

 

Yeah, but that's assuming she knew who her biological father was in the first place.

There's just too many things we don't know regarding how she ended up in Jakku...

1. We don't know that it was her family who left her on Jakku.
2. We don't know that she even remembers who left her on Jakku.
3. We don't know that she even remembers who her family is.
4. Even if she does remember a "family", it need not be her biological family.

So, going by Maz's statement...

whoever left her, whenever he/she/they left her...

1. May or may not be a member or members of her "de facto" family
2. May or may not be a member or members of her "biological" family
3. Is not Luke.
4. Is not coming back to get her.

There are lots of alternatives that fit this criteria:

1. She was left by her biological mother, and she's not coming back because she was killed.
2. She was left by her biological mother, and she's not coming back because she's cowardly/evil or captive.
3. She was left by Ben Solo before/after he became Kylo Ren (lots of details to work out in this scenario)
4. She was left by a surrogate family who didn't want the First Order looking for them.
5. Etc., etc...

There are literally infinite possibilities at this point, regardless of the timing of her abandonment and how it relates to her age and the massacre of the New Jedi Order.

So I think the implication of her scene with Maz is that Luke is what she actually wants ( as opposed to what she's hoping for by waiting on Jakku ).

What Maz is trying to say is not that Luke is not her family, but simply that what remains of her family is not going to come to her - she has to go look for it herself.

 

Maz basically said to Rey (my interpretation) "your family isn't coming back, but if you take the saber and the map, you can bring back Luke and he can train you in the ways of the force and become a Jedi"

Maybe he's her dad. Maybe he's not. But the force had to intervene to bring them together. Essentially Rey was emotionally trapped on Jakku waiting for Luke, and Luke was emotionally trapped on Ahch-To waiting for Rey.

 

Actually Artoo is what brought them together .

 

They didn't know that they needed R2 at the time though.

Maz said "whomever you're waiting for" which is a lot more ambiguous actually.
