Debating whether I want Reylo to happen (barf) or for the main conflict of this trilogy to be between cousins (meh, what a downgrade from father/son and best friends)

 

Not really. Especially if you never bought the "best friends" dynamic to begin with.

 

Seriously. What the Rey Solo idea came down to for me was that it'd allow for a hero/villain dynamic like we got with Obi-Wan/Anakin and Luke/Vader where the hero has a deep, compelling reason to not want to kill the antagonist. There'd be real love there that complicates everything and makes it devastating for the hero, forces them to grow and become stronger, etc. Brother/sister would allow for that, even if they'd never known each other. Cousins who never knew each other? Not so much. And I like romantic hero/villain dynamics too but in this case it'd irk me because then we'd have Kylo, I guess, caring about some girl more than his own father (if he's going to be inspired back to the light side by Rey that is). I think the only kind of relationship that should realistically trump someone's bond with their father (a loving, good father that is) would be a bond he had with a younger sister. And in the case of cousins-who-are-basically-strangers or strangers, Rey has no reason to give a crap about Kylo and I don't see how she ever could be moved to sympathy or compassion for him. Like where is the dramatic meat to this conflict... It'll just be a straight up revenge story, even if Kylo feels compassion for her, Rey will never return those feelings, and she'd just encounter him in battle a few times until finally killing him I guess? I'm so zzzzzzzz.

 

Agree. If they are related, she should be his sister rather than cousin. Them being siblings ups the stakes very much, and the conflict will be convincing and dramatic, being cousins, not really. Kylo already has compassion for her and apparently didn't want to harm her in TFA (one of those he calls "pulls to the light" things). Maybe Rey will also have a reason to be conflicted about facing him.
My favourite theory is that Rey is somehow a Kenobi...The great bond and conflict Kylo's grandfather had with his father-like figure in Obi-Wan (who Ben Solo happens to be named after), repeated in Obi-Wan's and Anakin's descendants. Now that is a satisfying thing to happen I should say.

"I loved you, Anakin. You were my brother", that's the canon.

To be perfectly honest with you all, my immediate interpretation of Daisy's words was not "OMG so she's definetely NOT Solo", but rather "how could people be so sure that I was Han's daughter? Have they seen the movie already? Obviously not, because it doesn't reveal that". Maybe because she used the verb 'to be' in the past tense.

But you know what? This discussion hasn't been fun for a while now. People are way too attached to their own theories, whoever disagrees is ridiculed and there's a weird defensiveness against alternative theories that are considered ridiculous.

So let's just leave it at that. Yay Rey's not a Solo! Hooray. Let's talk about Skymom now.

These actors don't know what the canon is. They can't even figure out who is gay and who isn't! I think we need to not take their opinions as seriously as the storytellers. They're hired to perform, not be geniuses.

and i agree that "cousins" is a weak connection/foundation.
if Rey and Ren are nobody to one another and therefore potentially mortal enemies, that's much more dramatic.
especially if they happen to be the two most powerful FSs in the galaxy; they're too rare to destroy each another, but they're completely at odds.
it gives Rey an actual challenge rather than "oh, he's my cousin/brother so now i'm conflicted".

Rey might not like it if Luke tells her not to kill Kylo Ren because of his own attachment ~ and that will give her journey some teeth.

There's nothing inherently "lesser" about a cousins connection, that's just narrow thinking imo. And them being completely foreign to each other, would be worse.

 

I also see that some have said that Ridley lied about not being present for the Skellig filming last September in an interview. Though I've never seen this interview, I knew better when I found out from a couple of names back in September that I won't mention here that she was certainly there at the time.

I think they are meant to imply that Pablo is making fun of how people are taking Daisy's words as gospel truth, considering she signed a non-disclosure agreement.

But it's just a guess.

 

Never trust someone who signed a NDA. I thought this was common knowledge?
