SPECULATION OFFICIAL Rey Discussion Thread

When Rey gets taken captive and held prisoner by Kylo, how will her friends find her? I doubt ther will be a huge neon sign saying "REY HELD HERE".

 

I've been thinking Rey could be Luke's for a few reasons....
1. Luke's monologue on teaser 2 . He's talking about His Father, Him, and his Sister. Then he says "You have that power too." That sounds like something you say to your kid.
2. Based on MSW leaks, it sounds like Rey and Han don't know each other when they meet the first time.
3. Who is Maisie Richardson-Sellers playing? Could she be Luke's wife in the flashback and is killed? She doesn't really fit with her ethnicity but you never know.
4. Rey's life when we meet her is too similar to Luke's. It's actually kind of a combination of Anakin's and Luke's. Another Skywalker growing up on a sand planet.
5. Yoda told Luke "The force is strong in your family, pass on what you have learned". Wouldn't you set out to have children to restart the Jedi Order? If Han and Leia aren't together, maybe they never were long enough to have children. Maybe Leia never wanted children to grow up in a galaxy full of conflict. Han doesn't seem like the diaper changing type either.
6. If Luke started an Academy, he would start with young children and watch over his own. Maybe his failure is why he exiled himself. He was "endangering" his daughter just by being close to her.

 

Well they say that Rey keeps her true identity secret to avoid being in danger due to association.

Or it could be Rey is the only offspring of Han and Leia, Luke's only niece and Kylo could be the sole offspring of Palpatine. Then Rey would be the ideal target for the First Order.

 

I like this theory.

Luke wont have children, and the character/story is better off for it. Rey's a solo(with skywalker blood). search your feelings, you know this to be true.

Harry knowles...been reading the man for years. believe me if he knew something he would not hesitate to break it. he craves the spotlight and his reasoning for not talking is complete bantha poodoo.

 

I thought of these eons ago, Rey and Ren are siblings, mesa thinks jar jar took the idea of the solo twins from the eu.

 

I wouldn't fully doubt the possibility of EU-ish concepts. NOT straight up 1:1 stories from the EU just the basic concepts of some of the stories. Rey and Kylo being twins or even just siblings and the children of Han and Leia doesn't mean any other elements from the Jaina/Jacen story will have anything to do with the ST. So many people express how much they loved the old EU and then those same people get mad when it looks like JJ might have used 10% of what one of the EU stories is based around. I know it's kind of a hard pill to swallow but forget the EU. Love it for what it is....a past era of stories created by several different sources for SW fans who just cant get enough. If JJ borrows a little here and there its more homage to the EU and SW fans than it is him being uncreative. If he takes one of the EU concepts and creates an entirely new story out of it and everyone loves it then who cares? It isn't like he's taking an idea from Spiderman and mashing it into SW.

 

I was doing more pondering while I was in my backyard tonight. Thought I might do them in dot points:

1. So far, Lucasfilm has had no qualms about revealing the full name of Oscar's character (Poe Dameron) or the name of Adam's possible character Kylo Ren. But it seems Rey's full name is possibly the biggest kept, closely guarded secret. Why?? If her name was Rey Dunlop (sarcasm), Lucasfilm would have no qualms about revealing it.

2. With the last two trilogies, it's been around the middle chapter where the bad guys start talking about the importance of the main hero.
About Anakin: "I have good news for you master. The boy has begun" - Count Dooku (AOTC)
"Soon I will have a new apprentice. One more powerful" - Palpatine (ROTS)
About Luke: Darth Vader speaking with Palpatine. (TESB, ROTJ)

Could we now have the baddies talking about the importance of Rey? Something like "We have a problem with the girl. We must find and destroy her."

3. If the First Order found out that Rey's last name was Solo, they be saying "So what?" but if the statement continued with "She's the niece of Luke Skywalker" the hunting squads would be sent out.

 

Unless Han Solo is still a general.

Unless Leia is now Organa-Solo.

 

I just don't see the point of hiding her identity if everyone sees Daisy and thinks "Han and Leia's kid." There has to be another reason they're keeping her surname a secret. On the other hand, Finn's last name is unknown as well (Though I'm pretty sure he's unrelated).

 

I think they are withholding Finn's last name because it makes things less suspicious. If everyone had a last name but Rey then the hunting party would be out.

 

Not sure how that got a dislike from me, wonder how that happened

Umm, Dooku says at the end of AOTC, "I have good news master, the WAR has begun". Not the BOY has begun. Lol.

 

I'm going with having a burnout when the engines are trying to turn over and light.

Then Finn has to get out and push start it.

 

So, there's a few different looks for Rey over the course of the first act.

Headgear and goggles. Makes sense this is her speeder attire. She has a staff, which has a thick tan strap attached by metal clips and a scavaging bag, which seems to have a strap made of several black ropes. Both can be seen hanging from her speeder.


Same headgear, with the goggles down, but her accessories are gone as she approaches the bid station. Unless this shot is flipped to match the cut in the trailer, but there is a small tubular accessory attached to the far side of her goggles which should be visible on the near side in this shot were it flipped. Maybe not.


Here she has the bag over her left shoulder and the staff over her right.


Same combination of accessories when she meets BB-8, but the shoulders have swapped (flipped image?)


At first I thought this may be from later in the movie, after our heroes have left Jakku. But she still has the staff strap over her shoulder. Could this be as she passes through the Jakku market? Maybe there is a scene where she trades some of her salvage material with one of the stallholders - she has to have a reason to have gone there in the first place right? Or is she just checking out the TIE crash site?
Either way, I've changed my mind, I think this is probably on Jakku at the start of the movie.



By the time she has encountered Finn and they leave in the Falcon, she has lost all her accessories, except for the staff, which she is carrying...



EDIT: After studying all those pics together, I have a new thought regarding flipped images. The clue is her belt. Small bag on her right hip attached to the lower of two belts, which runs diagonally to join with a higher belt at her left hip. The second shot from the first teaser is definitely flipped IMO the belt and bag have changed sides.
So this clears up some of the confusion for me. I did wonder why there might be a scene where she approaches with no staff and no salvage bag, when we later see her with those things - the answer: she doesn't, they simply can't be seen because the shot is flopped (possibly just for the benefit of the trailer).

 

hmmm wondering about the reason for these flips....

 

If the shot is flipped, it would likely be for aesthetic reasons. They threw those two shots together for the trailer, they probably don't go together in that way in the movie - but it would really jarr if we saw her facing left of shot, then immediately cut to her travelling in the opposite direction within the frame.
Then again, there were a fair few flopped shots in the original movies, so it may even stay like this in the final version. I guess in an age when stuff can be digitally altered flopped shots are less frequent/noticeable...

 

I agreei have speculated that before.

There has been some speculation she may escape on her own.
