SPECULATION OFFICIAL Rey Discussion Thread

I believe Rey may be Luke's apprentice, Luke is my all time favorite character is the star wars universe. He would have taken one apprentice to keep the traditional roles going. As to Luke's dark side, I don't see him as the enemy but as the mentor in hiding that the main characters need to locate to help deal with the new villain. I like the look for Luke Skywalker and believe JJ Abrams is doing a good job with things this far in the movie.

 

I still think that Rey is related. The rumors said that she is good at fixing things, which is a character trait of Anakin. Her name Rey is linguistically related to "royal", and Padme was a queen. These are strong hints that Rey is a granddaughter of Anakin and Padme.

As to whether she is Leia's or Luke's daughter, I now think that she is Luke's daughter because of the following reasons:

1. I read somewhere that George Lucas derived the name Luke Skywalker from his own last name ("Lucas"). Also, he used the code name JAK Production during the filming of the prequels, with JAK derived from the first names of his adopted children (Jett, Amanda, and Katie respectively). Well, it is interesting that Rey's home world is called "Jakku". I think this is a hint that Rey is Luke's child.

2. Jakku is supposed to be a new planet. It could have been any kind of planet, instead it's just another desert planet. I don't think that's because JJ Abrams lacked imagination, but rather it's another hint that Rey is symbolically connected to Luke in that they both grew up on a desert planet.

3. According to the rumors, Rey grew up by herself and Luke had been gone for a long time. Then they meet for the first time at the end of the movie (according to MSW's sources). To me, this makes a nice thematic progression, from Luke and Rey being separated and apart at the beginning of the movie, to them being together at the end of the movie. However, this thematic progression is weakened if they are just uncle and niece. Symbolically and emotionally it is more powerful if they are father and daughter.

4. As to the rumors that Rey inherited Han Solo's blaster, the MF, and Chewie, by itself this suggests that Rey is Han and Leia's daughter. However, in light of the additional rumor that Kylo Ren is Han's son, it makes more sense to me that symbolically Han and Rey are "substitute" parent and child. Han is Rey's substitute parent in that he's a father figure to Rey during Luke's absence (and Han's death symbolically paved the way for the real father, Luke, to appear). Rey is Han's substitute child because the real child (Kylo Ren?) has left the family (so to speak) by turning to the dark side.

 

I hope your right about Luke holding back from the darkside, he came close in TROTJ hopefully he has had his taste of it & not coming back for more, JJ has done well so far I just can't wait to see Luke in action in the 3rd trailer.

 

1. I don't think you can look at anything related to Lucas to draw speculation from. Jakku is a name and nothing more IMHO.
2. In the vast galaxy, you can only have one inhabited desert planet? Jakku is a new planet because if you kept having important battles and events center around Tattooine, the galaxy gets small. Having Jakku be another desert planet evokes the images fans are comfortable with but gives us something "new".
3. The rumors also have Rey using the Jedi mind trick, a lightsaber, and apparently she's an amazing fighter with her staff. I'm sure she learned all of that while sitting around her hollowed out AT-AT house. Nope. She's received training somewhere. Maybe she had her mind wiped or had a traumatic event make her forget her past, but once "the force awakens", she can no longer hide from her destiny.
4. There are too many pieces of evidence to suggest she's a Solo. Her own comments of being "solitary" when asked about her parents being one of the biggest pieces. For those arguing Luke was also solitary don't understand the play on words or haven't really thought about Luke's life before ANH. Luke was a farmer, lived the life of a teenage with his Aunt and Uncle, had friends, a life, etc. He was a DREAMER. He wanted adventure and excitement. He was not a loner or solitary.

We may not get all the answers in TFA, and knowing JJ we will probably be asking more questions.

 

Slightly off-topic, but I'd love if Jakku's name was an homage to that. That'd be better than what I always assumed it is, which is J.J.'s and Kathleen Kennedy's initials (J.J. Abrams Kathleen Kennedy U).

 

Just so you known, my alias is for a character I created for a series of books I am attempting to write about the Jedi named Miklos Cavvad, the first book is written but I am reworking it after I see the new movie to see if I can gain some new perspective on the force and this new imperial faction JJ abrams Has created.

If this will be like the OT, I'm guessing that in TFA we'll find out that Rey is related to a great man but then in VIII find out that her and Kylo have a personal connection.

 

Rey is Cindel. I just figured it out. Not trolling but, are the Ewok movies cannon? I just want to see one Ewok. MVS is Noah.

If Rey is Luke's daughter, which might not be the case, that makes it even more likely that she will lose her limbs and get chopped up by Kylo in Episode 8.

Do we know exactly how many years after Endor TFA is set? I read that it is approximately 30 years but not sure If we have an official date. I was having the crazy idea that we might be missing a generation, could it be possible for Rey to be Han and Leia's granchild instead of their daughter?

 

Yeah, it's around 30 years. That's not enough time for someone Rey's age (even on the low end) to be Han and Leia's granddaughter.

 

I agree she should be a bit older, plus judging by the cockpit she might just be one of his operatives.

 

That's why I'm asking if we have any official statement about the specific date. If it's 36 years instead of 30 it could be possible and it wouldn't be weird.
