    As we learned from Aftermath,

    The Republic's military was slashed 90%

    What it's state is during TFA remains to be seen, but the Republic exists and is opposed by the First Order. They must be creative in finding ways to fight back against the FO, so that's where the Resistance comes in.

    What this has to do with the OP, I don't know :p

    If the Prequels can pull an explanation for the droid duo ending up with no memory of Anakin or Obi-Wan out of their butts, I'm sure they'll find a way to explain their leap from Leia's and Luke's sides to wherever they've ended up.

    Glad someone else caught that. "...offering tactical data and communications support during important operations." Not something you could fully count on 3PO for. PZ is probably more level headed in battle situations.

    Maybe this PZ droid replaces K3PO who was destroyed in the Hoth Echo Base attack.
    K3PO according to Wookiepedia ;) ran all the ops related to rebel droids & IT stuff.
    K3PO was not liked but contained a database of rebel missions, files, plans, etc.

    I don't care that PZ is in the movie, I just find her so strange looking. like a robotic aardvark college mascot. so blue and so steroid necky. takes some getting used to.

    Take it PZ, guys. Leia got tired of C-3P0... wouldn't you? Jokes aside, her new duties likely require the use of more than one protocol droid. Or maybe goldenrod has been promoted. Or... maybe Anthony Daniels has pissed off so many people, PZ was created to shut him the hell up and minimize his role. I think PZ is visually offensive in the few pieces of artwork we've seen. But who knows, maybe in motion it'll be great. Also, I'm making a remote controlled one and mailing it to you OP.

    My problem with the design is that the neck is very obviously just hiding the cranium of the person inside the suit. Not sure Practical FX served them in this one instance; it'd almost be better to have the performer wear something similar to the Jar Jar (don't shoot, hear me out) on-set costume Ahmed Best wore.

    Or put some little arms on that neck that are jotting down notes on a pad or something.
