Pardon my saying but comparing astro-droids to cyborgs (designed to interact with humans) sounds to me like comparing apples and oranges.
Yes, the non-cyborg droids have a personality through other means, but the moment I put a face on one, must it be as blank as those of the midwife droids at the end of Episode III?

In the case of Chewie Leia doesn't have a choice but needs to deal with it. What I learned from this thread, however, is that PZ-4CO is supposedly a protocol droid of her own choosing. And I don't think that Leia needs someone to literally look up to.

And as you have proven yourself the design of PZ-4CO isn't that original but can be added to the designs in TFA that (unfortunately) deserve to be labelled "derivative"

 

The toy version of PZ stands out amongst the first couple of waves of figures and has givin me interest in seeing it/her/him on the big screen love the quirkyness of its look and has been labled "the blue 3po giraffe thing" by the kids ........on the down side that goss towers is a shockingly bad figure and charecter design

 

^^ This shows how different tastes can be, I for one think Goss Towers is the kind of alien you could have encountered in the OT.

I'm old school growing up with the OT , I've been embracing the new characters and like everyone here am hanging out for opening night.
I just can't like the look of this droid, it just seems lazy like they stuck a robotic praying mantis on top of some old 3PO spares.
I like the color tho

 

Forgive me for correcting you but Droids are robots not cyborgs as they have no organic parts. And regarding the expresions you still forget that what we see in the movie is not nesesarily what the character is meant to express. 4-LOM was just another droid in a series of protocol droids just like C3PO. That we find him to look menacing is one thing but to the beings that built him it's another thing in that in no was that design meant to express fear. It's the same as if the Gand or the Quarren made droids that looked like them. The same can be said of the 8D8 series droids that also looked menacing but that was not the intention of their design. Finally, you talk about the midwife droids having blank expresions. Are you aware of their creators the Polis Massan? Why would a race that lacks facial expresions feel compelled to put some on their droids?

I really like her figure alot and she does indeed look good next to other figures!

 

What the droid companies would do is have a standard model body and custom design a head for the species they were selling the robot to. They talk about this in the essential guide to characters as a way to make the droid more relatable to its acquaintances.

 

I don't have a problem with the new droid it will be cool to see a new artificial intelligence character on screen. Some of my favorite Star Wars character are droids.

 

On the contrary, I'm well aware what a real cyborg is (e.g. Luke and Vader), but - whether I like it or not - George Lucas decided to make Threepio a 'cyborg' in SW terms when he introduced himself to Luke in the garage of Lars Homestead (I think that the "C" was to mean Cyborg-3PO).

Maybe expression is not the best word but the faces definitely had allusions. Surgeon droid 2-1B with his snorkel carried allusions to a surgeon wearing a face mask, the insectoid faces of other bipedal droids carried allusions to "workers" in insect societies, the probe droid looked like a mix between a multi-eyed spider and an octopus etc.
Just by looking at these droids you could get an idea about their possible purpose which PZ-4CO (unfortunately) lacks.

You are presenting a sound "in-universe" argument, but why did the designer/creator of the Polis Massan go for blank faces in the first place?
If it's blank it's boring or else, maybe I've been spoiled too much by previous, original and innovative designs seen in Star Wars.

 

Variability and diversity is never boring.

Also why would all aliens be like Humans?! That would be boring.

Also majority of droids are designed by aliens in SW. So diffrerent droid designs represent also a different aliens in Star Wars universe.
Why would droids been design on the image of Humans?
Humans are just one of the species in very diverse looking Star Wars galaxy.

 

Definitely it's possibly the one figure guavian enforcer aside that is unique people rave over sarko plank but he is a bit 4-lomish for me( nice collection )

Star Wars has a look and a design aesthetic. They diverged from it slightly in the PT and people flipped out but a droid that borrows some features from other droids (of which there were many in both trilogies) is "derivative."

Please tell me how they can win?

People complained Maz's pirates look to much like real world pirates, despite they look great and very much in the spirit of cantina patrons and Jabba's friends.

People complained that the stone work in some scenes at Maz's castle or with Phasma near stone buildings to feel to medieval.

So when they are familiar its derivative and when its new its out of place.

 

The PZ robot reminds me a lot of Mechgodzilla sans that tail, or the guard guys from the Stargate movie.

 

I responded to a post by Amanaman where he provided a graphic comparison. I also add a picture of that Durge character. What shall I say, even the color is the same, original this is not.

On the other hand, the head could be an abstraction of a Rodian (now that would be original), but I don't remember Greedo's species for being particularly tall.

 

pz is played by a very tall girl called Natalie.
