RUMOR R2D2: What do we know?

In this picture we see R2D2 with crew, now this looks like they're filming in Dabi or whatever it was called the first couple of weeks. Is he around the Falcon in the village is this what BB-8 is spying on looking around the corner? If so where is C3P0?

The set photo seems to support the idea that the Kylo and Luke scenes from Teaser 2 definitely were been filmed next to each other - but both scenes are at night. It is still not clear if they are meant to be the same location though. It could be filming the village burn and Luke's scene next to each other was economical since they are both at night. Maybe they were rehersing right before sundown? Seems odd that they'd film this in the day and try to pass it off as night - especially with flying flame embers.

If it is at the village.. it would be pretty badass if Luke is either trying to find his saber or tracking down Kylo or trying to save Poe, but this still seems inconclusive.

It is clear that Luke is mourning something... either the death of someone or some group of people because he bows his head after placing a hand on R2.

One reason Luke's scene might not be at the Village - but rather a pickup for somewhere else - the rocks and rock structures just don't seem to mesh with the sandscape of the village.

While I'm not a fan of the flashback - it might be a quick shot of Luke morning the death of someone special from afar.

Yeah, if it's someone close to him or a bunch of people or his padawans, I think he would sense it no matter where he is.
i.e. Yoda sensing the Jedi being killed by the clones, and Obiwan sensing Alderan being destroyed. Also, on Dagobah, Luke could sense Han being tortured lightlyears away.

a decision has been made. the threads will remain separate on the basis that this one discuses R2 and the other focuses on Luke even though they are similar and share a scene. Thank you for your concern

 

I bet R2 has a message from Luke mirroring ANH. It will be a message to Rey.

 

I can't believe I hadn't considered that possibility yet. Although I guess it would be more appropriate if the message was from Poe intended for Luke that Rey discovers when she finds Artoo and Threepio during the aftermath of whatever happens on/above Jakku in the opening scene.

 

This was in the UK. Look whose behind R2 in a cloak-right behind him bent down in back of him.

 

Well it happen in the first movie of the OT so it may happen the ST as well.

 

That would be BB-8 sending a message to Rey, holding the Lightsaber. Like Leia putting the death star plans into R2!

 

Reading all the theories on where R2 is during the movie, seeing R2 with Luke is a potential clue.

Assumptions:
- BB8 is Poe's droid and helps him pilot his X-wing.
- R2 is in the care of Luke or Leia
- R2 and Luke are seen together in the movie at a death or funeral
- R2 is seen with BB-8, C-3PO at the Resistance base.

R2's first appearance speculation:
A) Maz's vision/flashback in which we see R2 with Luke in the past. R2 is currently with Leia and not with Luke.
B) With Luke on Jakku after the vicar/village is attacked by Kylo/Finn and Poe is captured - bb8 escapes
C) When falcon arrives at Resistance base and R2 is with Leia and C-3PO.

Theory A:
We first see R2 with a younger Luke in a flashback after the fall of his jedi training center. Luke bows his head in morning and he and R2 separate - leaving R2 with Leia. The next time we see R2 is with Leia in the Resistance base. R2 then goes with Han in Falcon to help bust Rey out of the base and/or lower the shields so the Resistance can attack the base/weapon.

This is a strong possibility. This means that R2 is most likely going to remain with Leia at the end of the movie, as there is no indication that R2 was on the set of the Skellig set and is not reunited with Luke. R2/C3PO may have a diminished role in future movies unless Rey somehow decides to take R2 with her and leaves him on the Falcon as she goes to see Luke? hmm...

Theory B:
Luke is active and shadowing Kylo throughout the movie and shows up on Jakku after the fight. Luke and R2 end up at the First Order base during the attack and help Han. The burning sad scene is thus after that confrontation, but then for some reason, R2 returns to Resistance base at the end of the movie, but Luke does not.

This could fit the old rumor of Luke making a tough choice in a confrontation with Kylo/Han. It might make sense that R2 then returns to the Resistance base, uncertain of Luke. hmm...

Theory C:
We don't see R2 until the Falcon crew arrives at the Resistance Base after Maz's Castle is attacked. R2 is then sent on the mission with Han to help them find Rey. After they spring Rey, R2 goes with the Falcon to find Luke and is reunited around a bonfire and luke is sad.

This one seems the least likely, but it still might fit.

Likely Possibility:
Theory A seems the strongest in that it fits a lot of the other speculation out there the best - meaning that the first time we see R2 is with Luke in some flashback/vision and the second time is at the Resistance base where it is clear that Luke is in hiding and separated from Luke. R2 thus has some bit of rivalry with BB-8 in the sense that BB-8 has carried Luke's saber much in the way that R2 did in ROTJ. When they plan the operation against the First Order base it is then BB-8 and Poe that save the day. R2 springs Rey, drops the shields. BB-8/Poe evade the array and blow up the base. Let the most heroic droid rivalry begin!
