Yeah, I wondered immediately if Obi Wan wasn't aware of Ezra's true path as a Jedi, or not, and that he might continue to communicate with him via the holocron next season. It's obvious the "Gray Jedi" is becoming an actual canonical concept, based on this series, Aftermath, the comics. Ezra and Kanan could be sort of prototypes for the new order? Who knows!

Exactly! Yoda and Kenobi are seeing the larger picture. That is why Kenobi would not leave everything and go back to the fight, as Hera and Rex pointed out (that if he were alive, he would not be hiding instead of fighting the Empire). Their connection with the Force helps them to see things other cannot see - and even so, they might see it from their perspective (as we learned in the OT, that both thought Vader was gone for good and then Anakin was redeemed.)

I found quite interesting that Bail told Rex that Kenobi was dead, and even hid that and the fact that Anakin had offspring from Ahsoka. Even when they were close people to the fallen Jedi and his former master, it seems Bail puts first the safety of his adoptive daughter and her twin brother so, as Kenobi's hologram mentioned, "We will each be challenged. Our trust. Our faith. Our friendships".

I daresay they will end up referring to it as "Gray Force user" rather than "Gray Jedi".

I liked your analysis of why Obi-Wan may have sacrificed himself (I once started a thread to try and get to the bottom of it!). As to his power beyond Vader's comprehension, maybe immortality and the pseudo omnipresence that comes from being at one with The Force?
OBI-WAN: Master Yoda said I should be mindful of the future...
QUI-GON: ...but not at the expense of the present. Be mindful of the living Force my young Padawan.

I guess such deep Jedi meditative states already grant Obi-wan more powers than most could imagine. It would be easy for the weak-minded to get lost or easily distracted in such a trance. Besides, dabbling in the future can be dangerous work - there's a Russian proverb along the lines of "if you keep one eye on the past then you are blind in one eye; but if you keep two eyes on the future then you are blind in both". I guess Maul was blind in the one eye but such heavy meditation risks Obi-Wan becoming blind in both!

[Random note:] That saying always reminds me of the ancient Roman god Janus. He is usually depicted as having two faces, since he looks to the future and to the past, and was seen as a god of beginnings, gates, transitions, time, doorways, passages, and endings.

    Obi-Wan doorway transition.png
I wouldn't see any continuity issues with Ezra surviving either (though I wouldn't bet on it!). There's talk of "last hopes" and "last Jedi's" in the OT but it seems like Ezra is neither (yet) - at least in the eye's of Obi-Wan and Yoda.
That Bail character seems as wise as a Jedi and sharp as a saber. It's nice to know that despite the Alderaanian disliking weapons and favouring a pacifist philosophy he's not afraid to fight and understands the importance of security-culture.

A few more thoughts came to mind after reading new posts.

First, some time ago, I was listing all the possible lies from Kenobi to Luke. Some of them, where kind of debatable back then, but now, at least two more are confirmed

    (1) "I'm getting too old for this kind of thing". Being old hadn't been a problem for Dooku, Yoda or Palpatine.
This episode confirmed that being old wasn't a problem for Kenobi either.

    (2) "I haven't gone by the name Obi-Wan since oh, before you were born.". Actually, seconds after Luke was born, Padmet calls Kenobi "Obi-wan", but it had been 19 years, so we were kind of giving him a pass on this one.... but it turns out that years later, someone else called him Obi-Wan again:
So, another lie for Master Kenobi.

I find it quite funny and poetic that in Twin Suns Kenobi says "the truth is often what we make of it", which sounds like he's trying to teach Ezra a lesson, but at the same time self-justify his actions (lies) because of a bigger purpose.

Completely different topic now, but still related to this episode. Isn't this the first time a good guy fatally wounds/kills a major villain in SW Rebels with a light-saber?
    Let's do a quick recap:
    • Grand Inquisitor: Kanan beat him, but without cutting him. Kanan destroys the G.I.'s lightsaber, but the latter later lets himself fall to his own death.
    • Seventh sister: Killed by Maul.
    • Fifth brother: Killed by Maul
    • Eight brother: Lightsaber was damaged, then he tried to fly with it and falls.
Note that Vader'helmet was cut by Ahsoka, but he wasn't fatally injured.

Final thought. Why did Yoda send them to Malachor in the first place? The Holocrons were not really crystal balls.
One option. In the context of Season 2, Ezra and Kanan were being hunted by the inquisitors (7th sister and 5th brother) and they felt incapable of beating them. Yoda sends them to Malachor. They found Maul who help them destroy 3 inquisitors. They lost Ahsoka in the process, true, but the net outcome of that mission can be interpreted as positive: enemies had more casualties. Kanan and Ezra don't have more inquisitors after them for now.
The other option: Yoda's original plan was for them to go the Malachor first, and then get to Kenobi, who had the "answer to destroy the Sith" (Luke). Remember that in Season 2, Ezra and Luke were around 15. Luke is around 22 when he goes to Dagobah, and Yoda wasn't happy because Luke was too old then. I don't think that during his time in Taootine, Kenobi was in full contact with Yoda. At some point, Force-ghost Qui-gon must have stopped being the middle man/messenger between them. Perhaps Yoda wanted to bring Luke sooner, but Kenobi had different views? But if that was his plan, then why not sending Ezra/Kanan/Ahsoka to Tatooine directly instead of Malachor? Perhaps Options 1 and 2 were not mutually exclusive. Sending them directly to Tatooine with 3 active inquisitors, who were not only pursuing them but kidnapping Force-sensitive kids, would have been extremely risky for the plans to protect Luke. That's why option 1 needed to happen first.

Thank you for reminding me of the Obi-Wan interlude in "Ahsoka", I went back and read it tonight along with other interludes (Anakin upset about getting such a young Padawan, then hopeful it will prove his preparedness for Jedi Master). Obi-Wan's solitude and attunement to the Force made him all the more powerful.

This episode was a close second to the season finale when Ahsoka and Darth Vader duel as favorite Rebels episodes. After that, I think the episodes with the Bendu were thought provoking.

Princess, Have you read any of the comics? They are the only part of canon that I haven't read. Primarily because there are so many spin-offs. Thoughts?

    Cheers!

The only downfall is that Ezra knows about OB1. Not that they will go in the route but season 4 can be where Vader seeks out Kanan/Ezra and maybe thinks OB1/Yoda is alive still with prolly the emperor knowing the Maul is dead. just a plotline to think of. OB1 is a crucial part of SW to where it's even sensitive to even have him in Rebels. The story was put well for him in this episode. His kill was quick, precise and to the point. Maul has actually hurting for the answer to where he knew it would kill him thats why he kept being assertive he would prevail.

Season 4 I hope will tie in the R1 and alil more on the Jedi side. since i can only see 1-2 more seasons of Rebels, would like to see the following:
    1. Kanan meets either OB1 or a episode to dagobah(Yoda) he deserves an ending if they end it like that or make a Anthology film to end Rebels.
    2. Boba Fett/Cad Bane in Rebels( why not!)
    3. Han Solo w/ Landau.(why not!)
    4. Saw Guerra
    5. R1 Crew
    6. Episode where they go to Jedha.
    7. Episode showing Jyn going to jail(prior to R1 breakout)
    8. Sabine being force sensitive
    9. I dont think Ezra is going to the darkside but more dark Ezra.
    10. AHSOKA TANO LIVES!!!(explains why Yoda sent them to malacor)

    Just something to imagine!

Upon initial viewing, this bugged me as much as I'm sure it did you, and upon subsequent viewings (I lost count of how many) I became more accustomed to it. I actually asked myself, "Why would they give Tatooine two moons to show them only so prominently here, of all places?".

And then, earlier today, I just happened upon the Rogue One ending/A New Hope beginning cut, and it all made a bit more sense. Literally one of the first things we see in ANH:

The twin moons! I'm sure there's a lot of symbolic relevance which could be contrived from it too:)

Luke you are force sensitive, oh I'll explain that later. I believe you are the chosen one, oh I'll have to explain that later too. You have to save the Galaxy from the oppression and tyranny of the Sith and you father is evil and you will have to confront him I tried already I cut his legs and arm off watched him burn and the man still wouldn't die. Oh and nice meeting you Luke for the first time, well first time for you that you can recall anyway I was the one that brought you to this planet wow your mother was so nice, oh yeah I was there when you were born.

Obi-wan told Luke what he needed to know when he was ready for it. If you want to blame someone blame Uncle Lars he raised Luke and didn't tell him anything or allow Obi-wan to even be around. Which ironically was the same reason Obi-wan lied as you say, to protect Luke.

    Thought-provoking saying. Thanks for sharing.

And yes, I can see the point of it: we do know that, even with his journey through the Force, Kenobi failed to foresee the final outcome of a potential redemption of the "Chosen One".

Exactly. I guess that's the best argument against the ones saying "this does not make sense since Obi-Wan said this in the OT".

OMG I love that Season Finale. That one and the Twin Suns are even more endearing if you've seen TCW and the connections between these characters. Then you see that Ahsoka says "You are beaten" to the Seventh Sister (not in the Finale, but in another Season 2 episode) mirroring Darth Vader saying it to Luke in TESB; Darth Vader tells Ahsoka "Revenge is not the Jedi way" same as his former self Anakin told her years before, in TCW Season 5.

I've read them all, and I've found them quite interesting. So far the main storyline - Star Wars - is good, some story arcs better than others, but the short arcs they have included from the Journal of Obi-Wan (a journal Luke found when he went back to Tatooine to his late master hut) are quite endearing. Also the only Dark Horse series included in the current canon, Darth Maul: Son of Dathomir, is good as well since it fills the gap in some way after the last we saw from the Dathomirian in TCW. For the Rebels characters, there is one called "Kanan: The Last Padawan" which is really good since it gives the background to Kanan Jarrus. And obviously the first Darth Vader comics were really good.

I think Obi-Wan's blindness comes from his belief that Anakin cannot be redeemed; that Luke must be the one to bring down the Sith. But Obi-Wan's deep meditations bring him closer to the truest form of the Jedi and far more powerful than he would have ever become had the Jedi and the Council not been destroyed. I believe the same goes for Yoda.

Both had much time to become much more attuned to the Force and to the self. It's not a coincidence that the three most important Jedi all turn towards exile and meditation. It's not a coincidence Luke follows that path.

All of the Jedi would have had more time for meditation if someone hadn't corrupted the senate and started a war.

A lot of people were asking about Pablo's tweet "stay tuned for monday". The trivia is up and they confirm that Luke is only a few days different in age from Ezra, and Luke was in fact an Ezra model in silhouette.

    see slide 6 of 6.

I was surprised at how short the battle was, but this has already been discussed so much that it would be hard for me to say anything new.

So instead I'll just say, does anyone else think Commander Sato sounds kind of like George Takei?

Obi Wan's mastery of the lightsaber being so far in advance of Maul at this stage made me think of Mace Windu casually lopping the head off of Jango Fett after having watched Obi Wan struggle through that fight in AOTC, and then watching Windu outduel Palpatine in ROTS.

What are we going to do about Ezra knowing where Obi Wan is?

Maul has been obsessing over Obi-Wan Kenobi for decades. He knows his enemy through and through. I do not think that Maul discovering why Kenobi was on Tatooine should be seen as mind reading. I feel that Maul simply deduced Kenobi's purpose, because he knew him so well.

I just rewatched "Twin Suns" and I expect the next season to answer where it is that Ezra is supposed to be and Obi Wan eluded to during their conversation. What I am not certain about yet is what events and outcomes already changed because Ezra was lured to Tatooine. At first I thought the outcome of the Battle of Lothal may be altered but now I suspect that it is something different. Perhaps while Yoda senses a need to push Ezra toward the Grey (sending him to Malachor), Obi Wan is concerned that Ezra is too easily influenced by the Dark Side, even when trying to do good, like Anakin.

Obi Wan to Ezra, "You have everything you need, although you seem to be letting it all go."

Do you all think this statement is as simple as having his friends and leaving them? Or, do you think that Ezra has a higher calling in regards to the Jedi resurgence that he missed out on or was set back when he became obsessed with Maul?

"You have everything you need" I think of this quote to Ezra from Obi-Wan as that at the very moment of his life he has the opportunity to do what is right. That the Rebellion needs Ezra's ability to lead others, as a padawan to Kanan and not to lose focus(like Hera said) on the task at hand. Even Ezra said him self that he shouldnt have come to tatooine in the first place, he felt "lost" and hurting chopper he also was hurting the crew.

"although you seem to be letting it all go." Ezra moments of hopelessness/anger/confusion, the need of certain people has lead him in the path where he came from. the feeling of him being alone again haunts him. seeking what Maul wanted wasnt what Ezra wanted to do. seeking guidance is what he got from the holocrons. even OB1 said that in doing so with Maul it altered the course of action.

So now when you think of it, well i think of it. Ezra has altered situations/events that will cause a ripple in what we know what the timeline/story is. He knows about OB1. He is hung up on OB1 helping the rebellion. and now that Maul is gone the only thing that can change him is himself so "letting it all go" line will play a factor in his story.
