Well if it is true, I think that would be a great direction for the series to take. I'd love to see that.

    Hi again, all, :)

I just want to acknowledge my mistake above. It was not Jason Ward who mentioned that RJ himself had confirmed that his trilogy will take place after RoS and contain no lightsabers, it was Star Wars Theory. I must've got my youtube talking-heads mixed up, somehow… sorry about that.

    In this video:

So yeah… Move along, move along (stormy 3)

Based on his most recent comments, there's nothing to really know about it and anything people claim to know is likely speculative at best.

Personally I think it's a pretty safe bet that anything RJ does with Star Wars is going to take place after RoS.

I get the impression he'd be far more interested in being involved with moving the story forward beyond the current saga than filling gaps and adding pieces to the existing jigsaw.

Yeah, not sure where he's getting the no Jedi, no lightsaber thing. That could be confusion based on the fact the project takes place outside of the Skywalker Saga.

Small update on RJ's status of his speculated new trilogy.

His response when asked about the latest update:

"Well we'll see. I'm still talking to Lucasfilm, they're figuring out what they're doing and we'll see what happens. But I'd be thrilled if it happens, and I'm working on my own stuff too."

I think a few key things to take from this is that he mentions Lucasfilm is still figuring out what they're doing. I believe this implies that they are undergoing a restructuring process, and plans mentioned in the past may not actually come to fruition. He also says he would be thrilled "if" it happens. That's a big difference from saying "when" it happens. Lastly, he concludes the statement by saying that he's working on his own stuff too.

It doesn't sound like he is as confident that the trilogy will be happening compared to previous statements. Time will tell, but my guess is that no official statements will be made regarding a cancellation, as it would potentially bring light to how drastically TLJ has negatively impacted the franchise - splitting the fan base may not have been the best financial move. Regardless, I wish RJ the best with his future endeavors, but my guess (as of now) is that he's done with Star Wars.

Yeah that statement is a classic face saving gesture that indicates his contribution to SW is thankfully over. I can only hope KK will be quietly removed from the decision and creative control process as well for theatrical side of SW to have any hope.

I think it's safe to assume that what Lucasfilm was planning in the Summer of 2017 has changed. We know that many of the stand alone film projects like Obi-Wan were shifted to Disney+. It also seems like whatever D&D are working on shifted as well with the changes that took place.

None of this should be that surprising when you're talking 5-10 years in to the future. We know Lucasfilm loves Rian Johnson, but as I've said in the past if JJ fails to deliver a satisfying conclusion and D&D struggle to make something people like I don't think Lucasfilm is going to be looking for different. They're going to be looking for a safe story that uses OT IP. I don't think Rian Johnson will want to do that kind of project.

I'd put his future Star Wars project at 50/50 right now. I wouldn't doubt Lucasfilm retain him for future ideas, but Knives Out has been received really well. He's not gonna wait around for Lucasfilm to figure out what they'r doing.

If it doesnt happen I will be deeply disappointed. TLJ is the finest Star Wars movie I have ever watched and incredibly excited for continued Star Wars films from Rian Johnson. Disappointed in LFL as well. Yesterday I saw tweets from people claiming that Carrie Fisher was killed by Disney because people saying that she couldnt stand RJ and TLJ. Saw tweets saying that Carrie also started using every drug imaginable because of working with RJ and TLJ. Yeah I know these people are scum of the earth to say such things, but it sure seems to me that if RJ and LFL part ways then LFL is going the less creative more mass market safe route and giving in to hate.

I respect your passion for RJ and the film. I hate that we live in a world where people make such terrible claims (referring to the statements about Carrie Fisher). Even though I don't like TLJ, I hope you understand that I don't support such heinous behavior. I think LFL simply needs to go the direction that will be best for the success and longevity of the franchise. They've done a lot of great things so far! I think they just need to take this moment to do a bit of restructuring. I certainly don't want them to take a less creative route, but I do think it would have been wise for them to take a little more time between movies to fully flesh out their story. Time crunches can be detrimental to creative projects. I can only imagine the amount of pressure JJ, RJ, (and even Collin Trevorrow before he left) felt when envisioning the stories for the sequel trilogy. Talk about an overwhelming task; but, I feel confident that if they had more time we would have gotten a more cohesive well thought out series of films.

I know not everyone that disliked TLJ is vile. Yet, it is the vile noisy ones that get the most attention. Hey I loved GL and well love Star Wars. He did a horrible job directing the PT trilogy and his writing was really bad. I still very much enjoy the PT, but it is mostly because I got to watch my children fall in love with Star Wars as I did as a child. I also feel that although the direction was poor and dialogue sometimes awful, the story was really good. Still my point is that it didnt make me say thats it Star Wars is no longer for me. TLJ may have been to bold for people and went in directions some people werent prepared for, but it was an incredibly well put together, well written and thought out film, looks incredible and has depth. Still it doesnt work for all, and some to those people are just vile and they scream to the high heavens every day. If LFL does indeed cancel the project they are getting rewarded and the rest of us punished. It doesnt make those movies replaced it makes them removed. I would prefer 6 Star Wars of the next 10 years rather then 3 even if I dont really like some of them, because others may love those and not really like the others. When you try to only serve all you end up serving less.

All that I can really say to that is that I prefer quality over quantity, it's as simple as that.

Exactly. I would definitely prefer fewer movies that stay true to the source material and concepts than more movies straying furtherer and furtherer away from it in favor of “subverting expectations” and ticking off identity politics bullet points.

I prefer both and we have got that. Still even with quality films there are some that some people will like and some that some people will not. As Star Wars films move beyond the Skywalker era we should be embracing quality filmmakers like RJ and not push them away. Just because they make 1 film some people are not fond of doesnt mean the next isnt your favorite of all time. For instance I have always been a big George Miller fan and have either really liked or loved Mad Max films since seeing the 1st one back in 1979. Cant stand Mad Max Fury Road. Think it is just plain awful. If another is made will I see it? Yes.

I'm starting to think RJ's trilogy isn't going to happen. He's saving face till after EpIX. Then, Lucasfilm will restructure their future trilogy plans.. maybe? Personally, I don't think Rian will want to do another Star Wars film.

If your assumptions are correct, I shall lament. Rian’s TLJ is my favorite SW in sometime because it got as deeply philosophical as ESB.

I am actually torn on this one and I dislike TLJ..... a lot.
I think the story is as.s, the writing is sometimes really horrible and some characters are just dumb. I like cinematography tho. The movie just looks beautiful. (TFA too btw)
The acting for the most part is also really really solid, especially from Hamill.

But Rian with a clean slate and bringing in other creative forces, could be a great thing.

I've essentially said this for over a year now but get bashed for it when I do. Perhaps I didn't say it as well. Projects get announced all the time. A good amount of them NEVER come to fruition and get put into "turnaround". It happens. When did they announce this, Sept 2017? A LOT, as you noted, has changed. Heck just in the last 6 months or so a lot has changed just with B&W. So who the heck knows?

Bringing in KF to "do a film" seems, to me, to be a major sign of change. I don't know what that portends (I'm not a Youtuber so I won't pretend I know what it means), but let's for a moment take a look at the changes since December 2017(or the events)
    1. The Last Jedi is released in Christmas 2017. This is the end of a stormy year at LFL. First you had the firing of Lord and Miller, the drama surrounding Solo, and also the firing of Colin T. It does suffer a 69% decline from opening weekend to 2nd weekend (source: Forbes). So...
    2. There is some backlash against the Last Jedi, to what extent, we can't be sure. But there is dissatisfaction with some fans when it comes to this film. (Let's not reargue this point)
    3. B&W of Game of Thrones fame are announced to be on board for a trilogy of Star Wars films. Premature? Some feel it might be, as GOT quality went down once they outdistanced their source material and feel LFL should wait to see how GOT turns out. Most of us think this is a good move.
    4. May 2018 Solo releases and its a major flop, at least for a Star Wars film. Production budget: $275 million (source: Boxoffice Mojo) and only makes $214 million domestically (total is $392 million) which must be well below what they thought it would do.
    5. Rumors about KK being fired in June appear to be either inaccurate or premature. Either way she remains in place and is extended quietly in September. However, she is not nearly as front and center as she had been.
    6. In Sept '18 Iger gives an interview where he takes the blame for the Solo flop and says they will "slow down" with Star Wars. Also there will be no more one shot films (at least not at the cinema).
    7. Kiri Heart, part of the "story group" has left LFL.
    8. Star Wars celebration 2019 announces there will be a film every other year starting in 22. The first one is by the GOT guys, but nothing else is said. Rumors speculate it could be based on the Knights of the Old Republic EU material, but again, this is just speculation. RJ says he is still doing a Star Wars trilogy.
    9. Galaxy's Edge opens in Summer of 2019. It appears to be less than well received. Crowds aren't there and the head of Disney Parks moves on (is fired).
    10. September 2019 it is announced KF is going to produce a Star Wars film.
    11. Triple Force Friday comes and goes, and in all of the stores in my city, you would think there isn't a Star Wars film being released in 2 months. At Target and Walmart stores I've been to out here (we have about 2 million in the metro area) there is ABSOLUTELY nothing new. None of the stores opened up at midnight or anything like that (obviously Walmart was open anyway) and while there is a large display set up for Frozen 2 there is nothing special for Star Wars that didn't already exist the week/month before TFF.
    11. Rian Johnson appears to back track on the idea that he is still working on a trilogy and now says well...

I think it is obvious that Iger doesn't like where this has gone. It started out like gangbusters right out the gate in '15, but since then, there has been a lot of trouble. That's okay if films are kicking butt and taking names. Is it that the bar has been permanently moved up thanks to the success of the MCU films? Is it that the bar was set amazingly high thanks to the success of The Force Awakens?

Perhaps KF is being line up to take over after KK? It would make sense as he will never top what he did over the last decade with the MCU. It would give him the chance to work on a franchise he supposedly loves and at the same time move away from what might be a no win situation. Who knows?

I think the only one who really knows the answers to this is Bob Iger. I will say that a Star Wars film without Jedi and Lightsabers, IF I'm Bob Iger, would not be given any green lights at this point. NONE. If that is RJs desire, and I don't know that it is, then I can see Bob saying yeah, no thanks dude. And if I'm Rian Johnson, I don't think I'd want to do a Star Wars film. It is best, I think, for both LFLand RJ to go their separate ways. Another option is to do a film under the LFL banner, but it has nothing to do with Star Wars, seeing as how they want to start putting out more than just Star Wars or Indiana Jones.

Finally, a bit of a response to what @KeithF1138 mentioned. The internet can be a wonderful place. But, just like the real world, it can be a place full of bile and vitriol. I have made no secret of the fact that I can't stand The Last Jedi, but I've also said I love some of what RJ has done elsewhere (Looper and Brick were well done). What some people have said about Carrie's death being on RJ, that is garbage.

Anyway, I apologize for the length and the somewhat rambling nature of this post.

Good post. Much I disagree with, but they're dead horse topics. In regards to Celebration, I don't think Lucasfilm announced anything about films after IX. Disney put out a tentative release schedules with 3 Star Wars films, but it's not a complete list of projects.
Those things have never been proven to be related. It was a restructuring and the X caused Y is simply internet conjecture. News about the parks has gone quiet since the park in Orlando closed.
I've then this mentioned a couple of times in regards to RJ's project. Where is this coming from? Seems like more internet nonsense.
