I think he’s a completely new character but he might have something to do with characters from the past like Palpatine or Plagueis

I just don't understand why people think this:

"I'm Snoke - a new baddie from the Unknown Regions who watched the Sith take over and only emerged when the coast was clear"

    Is better than this:

"I'm Snoke, formally Plagueis. I trained the Emperor, created Darth Vader and cheated death".

But yeah, whatever, let's go with Mr Tacked-on-Snoke from Planet Out of the Blue.

I think Snoke will be a ancient force senstitive. Lucasfilm is going to do a Plagueis and Dawn of a Jedi fusion of the Expanded Universe

The problem I have with him being Plagueis is he was a Muun and the new visuals on Snope show that he is relatively human, albeit deformed through physical trauma or disease, but human. Muun's are tall and linky, but the new trailer shows Snoke as potentially average size. Other leaked images show his as pretty much human, again, with much of his face and neck missing. They'd have to shoe horn the story as Palgueis "recreating" himself through the force into a human like being, but then answer the question about where he's been all this time and why he looks so deformed?

Thus, I think it's probably Snoke is simply a new character. Whether he be from the Unknown Region or someone influenced by the Empire, we dunno. I would say given the First Order's ideology the latter is more likely. While the movies always limited Force-Users to about three tops (minus Prequels, although two-four were the main focus) the universe around the movies always included other force users. Even after Order 66. Some of that expanded universe still influences the new trilogy and I'm sure Snope, like Kylo and Rey, has some influence from old expanded universe material which evolved into a new character. Just, probably not Plagueis in my opinion.

Snoke is ancient. He even predates the Sith and is likely the first Dark Side user in the galaxy. He may be the one who inspired the Sith and trained them at one point, but considered himself above them, almost like a god.

He used the Sith to rule the galaxy and was defeated thousands of years ago when the first Jedi emerged and imprisoned him in a distant part of the galaxy.

Emperor Palpatine,in his Quest for the ultimate power have discovered him. Palpatine organized for Snoke to be freed and take control of the Imperial remnants ,in the scenario of Palpatine's death..Contingency.

i'm surprised by your insistence on Plagz being a character in the ST. surely a Snoke-is-actually-Plagz switcheroo would be as lazy and asinine as a Rey Solo/Skywalker reveal.

so, Snoke watching everything go down and coming out when the coast is clear is somehow worse than Plagz watching everything go down and waiting til the coast is clear?

before anyone launches into some baloney about how Plagz would have been healing up from Palp's assassination attempt, you're still dealing with the same gripe: some bigger, badder villain has come out of left field, especially if you're a casual Star Wars fan that doesn't even know that Plagz and Palps had a personal connection.

also, any speculation about Plagz ability to heal and the rate at which that would be achieved is supported by zero evidence; to suggest that it would take 10-20+ years to get back into action is simply made up to confirm a theory.

the most reasonable explanation for Snoke is that he's Snoke, a new character that hasn't been fully revealed yet.

Except Plagueis' backstory is woven throughout the story - in that being a Sith he was always seeking to take over the galaxy. With Snoke, unless he is new to the Dark Side, he stood back for a long time and did nothing at all.

With Plagueis there is an elegance to the story, in that he "created Vader" and now, at what is likely the end of the Skywalker saga, he is the one that needs to be defeated.

With Plagueis there are opportunities available that no other villain can provide - not only in connecting the trilogies but in the story options - if he did indeed create Vader then this would be something that would weigh heavy upon the Skywalker family. Imagine Luke's state of mind when he discovers his family was created by the Sith! What's more, in being Palpatine's master and managing to cheat death, he provides a means of bringing in a different villain with special capabilities - allowing a way to explian why his FO is so much like Palpatine's Sith lead Empire but also in perhaps being a bigger challenge for the heroes to overcome.

WIth Plagueis, everything just works. It makes perfect sense. And again, it isn't about what the original story was with Plagueis but rather what could be made to be true...

"if he did indeed create Vader ..."

that's a big "if" after the canon purge...

if Plagz didn't create Anakin via the Force, then the idea of his backstory being woven throughout the saga is out the window; he would have been just another Sith in a long line of Sith. why not bust out Darth Bane at that point? hell, his backstory is the foundation of the Sith as we know them!

i would ask you: if Plagz isn't the one that created Anakin, would you still want Snoke to change names?

from what i've read on Wookiepedia, it sounds like Plagz was first mentioned in a draft of RotS. if the whole idea was that Plagz created Anakin and then spawned the Star Wars Saga you'd think he'd have been a bit more fleshed out?

also, Sidious states that once Plagz' apprentice learned everything he knew, he killed him. if we're going to be taking Palps at face value then we know that Palps was able to do anything Plagz was. this further diminishes Plagz' importance.

You're missing the point - it's not about what was the case, but what could be written for the ST.
Lucas left Anakin's conception ambiguous. It may have been the Sith (Plagueis or Palpatine or both) or just the Force. It wasn't important for us to know.
But now we have the ST and the writers could make anything, within reason, happen.
So I am saying that as the foundations of the Plagueis origin story for Anakin have been sown, why not expand it? And if anyone can survive "death" it is the person who was said to be able to cheat it (for others).

Why not Bane - because nothing is said about him in the films. Only Plagueis is spoken of and only Plageuis could be a living villain (we didn't see him die, we did Sidious - emphatically) who has a direct link to Vader (which is what the saga films are all about).

Again, see above. I'm not saying this was always the case - just that it could easily be made the case and a good deal of evidence still points to Plagueis.

Or so the over confident Palpatine thought...

"Lucas left Anakin's conception ambiguous. It may have been the Sith (Plagueis or Palpatine or both) or just the Force."

pretty sure it was made clear in TPM that it was the Force; at least that's what Qui-Gon believed. no one was like, wait a tic, maybe Anakin came from somewhere else! there's not a question or any tension to go along with that point in the films. Palps mentions how Plagueis was strong enough to create life, but if we're going to talk about Palps' overconfidence then maybe this is another misstep during that conversation...

you are right, the ST isn't necessarily about what came before, it's what they can take from the OT & PT and propel things forward. with that being the case, i don't see how bringing Plagz back would be any more interesting than doing something creatively different, especially with the whole Plagz-Anakin creation element no longer canon.

That's what the Jedi say in TPM. But the Jedi were acting on incomplete information. They didn't know the Sith existed nor could potentially create life or cause the Force to strike back. When Palpatine tells Anakin that Plagueis had the power to create life, he nigh on winks at him. It's a strong indicator that this could be the truth behind Anakin's origins. And from the horses mouth himself:

Now, there's a hint in the movie that there was a Sith lord who had the power to create life. But it's left unsaid: Is Anakin a product of a super-Sith who influenced the midichlorians to create him, or is he simply created by the midichlorians to bring forth a prophecy, or was he created by the Force through the midichlorians? It's left up to the audience to decide. How he was born ultimately has no relationship to how he dies, because in the end, the prophecy is true: Balance comes back to the Force.

You don't see how the Skywalker family, being a creation of the Dark Side itself, couldn't add to or propel the current story forward? I think it would add tremendous depth to it. The alternative is a newbie Snoke who provides none of that and a story & personality that could easily be added to Plagueis anyway.

Totally new character. He will have his own interesting back story. Especially IF he is to be the big bad for the remainder of the trilogy; providing Disney throw no curve balls in this regard. Which they still might.

at the end of the day i suppose we'll all have a day of reckoning once TLJ (hopefully) spills the beans; if not, we'll be going round and round for another couple of years. (r2-d2)

I'm referring to Luke's state of mind and the reason Kylo Ren thinks his destiny is what it is. Plagueis being the Skywalker big daddy would give extra weight to that.

Not for any new benefit or deep reason other than "it is the Skywalker saga". Having Plagueis be behind the Skywalker's adds a very strong story element. And that is my final word. Now stop questioning my authority go to bed Pilky.
