OFFICIAL NEWS Star Wars Episode VIII Delayed until 12/15/17

Discussion in 'Star Wars: The Last Jedi' started by Rieekan, Jan 20, 2016.

?

Why do you think Star Wars VIII was pushed back to december 15, 2017?

  1. To push it further away from Rogue one.

  2. To allow more time to make a better movie.

  3. Both.

My first thought was because the december release date has proven more succesful than they anticipated.
TFa is making them some craaaazy money!

This makes me think Rey parents may have really been no one special and they're getting cold feet. And are taking the time to make it a Skywalker, Solo, or Kenobi to please fans. The documentaries in 5-10 years should be GEWD.

Rewrites are certainly nothing to worry about and is probably an enthusiastic team with ideas. But but but, the story that the original cast did so well they're expanding their roles is kind of silly PR.

Am I supposed to believe Daisy and Boyega were not going to have big parts? We know Poe's role was augmented but that's old news.

This doesn't bode well. The current movie, "The Force Awakens" is the result of the last time Disney and Lucasfilm wanted a major re-write. Quite frankly, I was not impressed. And now they want a re-write of "Episode VIII"?

Except we don't have JJ on this trying to force something in order to make a "familiarity" for people .

Well if it is for the better I can live with the delay... What I am most afraid is that all these rewrites may cause plot inconsistencies and raise even more questions.

That's.... that's not why you change a film release date. You don't push back or forward a release date to go up against another film... on the contrary: you do it to avoid other films or to give the filmmakers more time to finish the job.

It's SW so I fully expect something to either contradict or not make any sense.

Half a year of extra time never hurt any work in a high pressure enviroment.
As for the rumors of rewrites it would actually have surprised me a great deal more if there wouldn't be any.
They would have had to have lost their collective marbles if they hadn't planned contingencies for a less favorable impact of TFA than the one that materialised.

What happened on VII is not what is happening on VIII. On VII the three writers failed to come up with a completed work by the November 2013 deadline. That left the remaining two writers with two months to start from scratch with a new script just to avoid pushing it back yet again into a May 2016 slot. That is what led to this TFA being constructed from ANH's skeleton IMHO.
We know Rian Johnson had the script for VIII completed by the time TFA premiered.
    http://makingstarwars.net/2015/12/daisy-ridley-praises-rian-johnsons-star-wars-episode-viii-script/
So what is happening this time is that feedback is coming in from TFA and they need to modify the script in light of the new data.

Let's not forget the original script for the 1980 film wound up becoming the first EU novel. Based on feedback from the 1977 film, Lucas and Brackett scrapped that idea and went with a script that put a focus on Darth Vader.

Disney wants Christmas to be all about Star Wars. They estimated before that TFA would make 5 Billion in merchandise alone. I don't think they want to mess with the magic formula – it worked out big time for them. If we get a better film because of it great for us, all the better.

I for one am glad that it will not release so close to Rogue One.
That's what worries me; familiarity breeding contempt. There are just too many SW films in production and the saga runs the risk of growing stale.A new trilogy every ten to fifteen years or so? Great!
A new SW film every year? In ten years and ditto films time everything that was special about this universe could be mundane.

I hope that doesn't happen because I was very sceptical at first when Disney took over the franchise but ended up massively enjoying The Force Awakens. Time will tell.

I hope that Rian Johnson himself decided to rewrite the script rather than Disney but it is pretty obvious that Johnson was forced to this.

2 more years?? (r2-d2) Well, I hope it's for the best. The main concern I have with this is that it seems they do the rewrite to focus on the characters but I feel like there are too many characters to develop and this could lead to a mess.

I have no issue with this being pushed back, sure I wanted to see it asap but if it means maximising time to make the best follow up to the massive hit of TFA then it's all good, I can wait a few months.

Starting and finishing Filming and Post production to rush release a film just 17 Months on from TFA really is no time at all and I did have my concerns over the length of time they were leaving themselves to follow up a massive world wide hit, with some great new original characters who have a great basis to be built on moving forward. .

Plus it leaves some breathing room for Rogue One from a marketing perspective, which makes sense. That film was very much being left in the wake/in the shadow of the main films. I bet the general audience dont evern know about that film right now! Non fans will probably no doubt think it's Episode 8 even as soon as they see the words Star Wars in the title as soon as it's Marketing starts to kick in.

We really are being spoilt for choice with the amount of Star Wars material in Film, TV & Print right now. We’ll just need to be patient a short while longer. For me, this is a good move.

whilst it sucks that we'll have to wait longer for VIII.. i very much doubt that it was moved primarily for script/story reasons.
it may have been the plan for some time to move it to a Xmas holiday release.

as for the script changes.. whilst a part of me would love to hear that Rian Johnson's script is done and he's sticking to his guns and making it his way... you'd have to be mental to not listen to the fans/critics of TFA and make some changes lol

episode VIII will be fraggin awsome.. trust me.

I'm wondering if they've been hanging out in The Cantina and decided that the Plagueis theory needs working in, pronto! (emperor)

I'm happy with the wait, it's become like a tradition now very star wars movie in December we would could have been waiting only 5 months in 2017 then after that nothing for another 2 years. I wonder did John Boyega know about that before he announced episode 8 shooting was starting soon.
