I think this is the schedule for the footage release:
    - April, SWC: 1. teaser
    - July, SDCC: 2. teaser
    - October/November: official trailer

I hope, I'm wrong though and we get an earlier look at EPVIII.

That has a much better chance of happening than a release with R1. So sure, why not.

I think any Episode 8 promotion will be after Rogue 1. I don't think they want Episode 8 to step on any promotion of Rogue 1, so the next 5 months will be Rogue 1, Rogue 1, Rogue 1. Then 2017 will be Episode 8, Episode 8, Episode 8.

Good time to be a SW fan!

That would make good business sense. They have a lot invested in Rogue 1 and I doubt they want Ep 8 to steal the thunder

    Exactly.
But be prepared for a teaser in front of Rogue One...or after the credits roll.

Wont happen. 2016 is all about R1 and 2017 will be all about Episode VIII.

They really need rogue one to have maximum hype behind it so that it's successful. If it flops, we might not get the third anthrology film. So I doubt they will release any Ep. VIII teaser before R1which would largely shift the focus of viewers and fans.

And god I hope not. In my opinion the MCU has ruined a special part of movie-going. I'm not a hard core marvel fan but some of their movies (the second avengers, guardians, and civil war) were very good and when the film ended, you were left with that moment of awe as the credits start rolling. You used to be able to carry that awe with you when you left the theater, but now you have to wait around through what feels like hours of credits to see the PC scene and that feeling wears off.

Since we haven't seen a teaser at Celebration or SDCC... I can't see them releasing a trailer till 2017 unfortunately. The guys in the comments above pretty much nailed why.

The think the only thing we may get it a title or something, but even that may be far-fetched now.

    Respectfully disagree.

They can show a short, 90 second teaser with the title, in theaters before Rouge one.

It doesn't take anything from R1 if you release it at the same time...because people are already there, WATCHING R1. You've got them, the marketing worked. And then it could also be online.

It would be just short flashes, characters turning to look at the screen -Finn, Poe, Laura Dern, BDT, Kelly Tran, Phasma, then Kylo, then maybe a shot of a ship taking off, and some of the Drubnik speeder chase, close on a shot of Rey and Luke meditating together on Ach-to. Lots of music, no dialogue, 90 sec, end with the title.

They did the same for TFA in November of 2014. It's fairly standard for big movies to have short teaser with the title one year out. (the main trailer won't come until Star Wars celebration in Orlando next summer)

Done this way, it creates more hype for R1 for us die-hards, and will inform the general public seeing R1 that VIII is coming a year later.

    Win/win.

Wait, I was disagreed with twice? lol.

I posted something similar several pages back and got a bunch of likes...somebody really thinks we won't get a teaser in December, 1 year out, eh?

Even though we did last time for TFA? Even though the movie is wrapped in July? Even though when everybody is in theaters for a starwars movie already is a perfect time for them to do it?

I can't think of any good reasons not to do it...and nobody from LFL has said that they aren't. So why the disagreement?

Something you care to share with the rest of us?

(and, as noted - "because it would draw marketing away from R1!" isn't true...if you release the VIII teaser IN THEATERS with R1, then you haven't taken away from it all...everybody will already be there watching R1.)

Just to clarify I didn't 'disagree' with you and give you a little Count Dooku icon.

I see your logic and it makes some sense.

However, a Marketing Exec would look at that and be worried that it would confuse the audience. It wouldn't confuse us but to a casual film-goer it would.

Another big point I'd like to add is that before they play teaser's at a cinema the teaser/trailer must get an age-rating that matches the film being shown or lower. If an Episode 8 teaser is released around the same time as Rogue One it would not be certificated for cinema-viewing for at least another few week's.

In regards to comparing Rogue One/Episode 8 Marketing Campaign's to TFA is an unfair comparison. TFA rebooted the Star Wars universe after a 10 year absence. Lucasfilm and BadRobot really needed to market TFA as soon as possible. For Rogue One they need to work hard on marketing the fact that this film is an anthology and effectively sell a new spin-off franchise to the public. Episode 8 will bring the viewers in regardless. Thus a logical conclusion is that they'd wait until after Rogue One to begin Episode 8 promotion.

    ...that's my 2penny's worth anyway.

True. Abrams fought for that teaser 1 the marketing team didn't plan that at all, the reasoning to still make it doesn't work for VIII. We are still at the beginning of a Star Wars decade with 5 -6 films. The last thing they want is to burn people out in in the first half. I know some of you want footage the more the better but think about it. What happens after teaser 1? yeah still a long wait and demand for teaser 2. There is no use to spread anticipation over a long period of time, you focus marketing when you have something to sell, like toys or tickets (this is what R1 is doing atm). And one last thought, if 2015 has shown one thing: you don't need to attach a trailer to a film anymore, you have a far better reach over the internet maybe connected to an event.
