Agreed. Even if it only happens once people are in the theater, it may yet put an end to the endless, "Where's Rey / Is that Rey / Where are Finn and Kylo Ren?" reactions to Rogue One.

People are not stupid, if they are really interested in knowing when Episode VIII is released they will look it up online. If they dont and get confused between Rogue One and Episode VIII its their own damn fault.

You'd be surprised how many new -jump-on-the-bandwagon fans TFA created. People are not that smartly inclined to start looking up info on VIII. For a lot of them, it's simply:

''Oh? a new star wars movie coming out? trailer looks good, wanna see that, really looking forward to seeing what the old wizard man on the island will do with the girl''

''the girl's changed a lot though, almost doesn't seem like the same one''

Slightly exaggerated, but you get the point.

 

very true and for many the new SW movie is one of many movies coming out every year. If they liked the last one, they may watch a trailer once and if the explosions look good, they may go there on a weekend. But don't expect them to have checked all the news, boards ect to be up-to-date with the story. They may still have in mind that Han Solo was killed by Vader wannabe and the movie ended with the girl and the old wizard. So now in december the first question is, the girl looks different and where is the old guy?

If there is no opening crawl the confusion may be worse.

 

Oh man, didn't even think about that. People confused, start walking out when they see a young girl and her father who looks nothing like Luke, lol. Nah won't happen, but there will be confusion for some.

 

No matter what there wont be a teaser in 2016.

 

If true, i wonder if we get the title around new year, one long "teaser" (TFA teaser 2 level) at celebration, final trailer late october then spam tv spots for the final few weeks?

 

A title is possible. I guess we will see soon.

 

I find it hard to believe that some kind of trailer hasn't been cut together by now. I completely buy that they are playing it safe and trying to separate the two movies in people's heads and think waiting until SWC is the best strategy.

That strategy wouldn't be necessary if they had thought things through more thoroughly and hadn't begun the SW renaissance with two incredibly similar movies that both connect to ANH in tons of ways.

I have always worried about timing with SWC sitting there in April.... If SWC was in May or June, then I think we'd be guaranteed to get a teaser in Feb or March.

They'll be done with reshoots and probably 90% done with the film by then... If they wait until April of 2017 to reveal footage or the name....wow. The expectations will be higher than TFA.

My stance has always been that in the same way that SWC in 2015 had a RO "concept" and "announcement" trailer and they released an announcement teaser for TFA in November 2014, I predict E8 will get an "announcement teaser" by early February 2017 that will give us the title and 40 seconds of footage. They did an announcement video for the beginning of filming. I just don't think they will wait until April to show anything and reveal the title.

 

Doesn't London bet on everything? Are there odds for when a title will be released? Follow the money.

 

Vegas has betting line for basically everything possible. I know Lloyd's of London will underwrite an insurance policy for nearly anything (like Taylor Swift's lips or Daisy Ridley's dental veneers. Yeah, I said it).

 

Guys I can't remember. Is it really weird that we don't have a title yet given that it is a year out? When should we be expecting the title?

 

the trailers are such a massive part of the production now, that it/they will have been worked on already.

it wouldn't surprise me if certain scenes are filmed explicitly with trailers/teasers in mind.

in the old days they would have just made the film and then cobbled some of the clips together.. that doesn't happen in these big budget jobbies.

If we don't get a title with the R1 ticket sale announcement, then we won't get a title this year at all.

My guess: Title announcement and a short teaser in February.

in all seriousness..

Disney can only make 3 mistakes with marketing for episode 8:-

• push episode 8 stuff while R1 is about to come out. they are 2 different films, but star wars is star wars and it makes no sense to convolute either release.
• release too much too soon and show too much of the movie months before dec 2017.
• release nothing until the last minute next year.

they will have a strict but simple strategy. Disney have a lot of big releases next year.. Beauty and the beast (yeah ok.. i wont watch it either), GotG2, Spider Man, Pirates of the Caribean 15 (or is it 16? ) and Thor etc.

the films are spaced out and the marketing for each will be as well.


I don't personally think we will have to wait until celebration. I suspect there will be a nice surprise for us between new year and R1 dvd/BR release. long teaser at Celebration and main trailer later in the year.

Ohhh and I thought Pirates is episode 25 already? My mistake. And which episode Spider Man or reboot? Lost it after Toby was out. Ohh and another Thor? So hard competition for our dark prince fans between Kylo and Loki.
